Beaches

Aldinga Beach is one of the best beaches in Australia and we are so lucky to have it right on our doorstep. The sand is so soft and the sunsets breathtaking - it’s the perfect beach for long walks or summer swims, its close enough for a quick dip or stay the day and let the tide roll in. If you are the diving type, Aldinga Beach is an underwater playground brimming with marine life. Snorkelers and divers will love Aldinga Beach with its offshore reef and Aldinga drop off, where the sea plummets 21 metres creating a spectacular underwater cliff. This is one of the most dived sites in South Australia for good reason. You can walk from Kestrels Nest, it only takes a few minutes. If you turn left on to Kestrel Terrace and then left again on Quondong, the stair access down to the beach is at the end of Quondong as you hit the Esplanade. If you feel like driving, it is one of the few beaches in Australia where cars are permitted, and you don’t even need a four-wheel-drive, just stay on the firmer stuff and watch for the rising tide. The ramp for vehicle access is just up the Esplanade if you turn right out of Quondong and It is open to vehicles from 5:30am to midnight. During the summer months, access ramps may be staffed by volunteers and a vehicle access fee will apply so remember to bring some coins. Liquid Delights a mobile drinks van is often there on the weekends over summer, serving up coffees, hot chocolates, smoothies, milkshakes, spiders, iced coffee’s and even pancakes and ice cream sundaes.

Port Willunga Beach is one Fleurieu Peninsula’s most photographed beaches featuring the remains of the Port Willunga Jetty and well worth the short 10 min drive along the Esplanade. The beach is famous for its golden cliff faces, crystal clear waters and soft white sand - the type that squeaks between your toes. It is an ideal spot for those long beach walks on the wet sand, with only the sound of waves lapping at your feet. Nestled on the edge of the cliff top is the Star of Greece restaurant, offering stunning views along the coast and named after a nearby shipwreck. Sections of the hull of the Star of Greece, which came to grief in 1888, remain on the ocean floor and make for a popular diving spot. At low tide parts of the wreck may still be visible from the shore. It’s the perfect spot for a beach picnic. Star of Greece have a little kiosk window serving fresh seafood, including a range of locally-caught fish, as well as squid, chips, burgers and a few breakfast items, too.

Walks

Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park, which is home to some 166 species of birds, as well as numerous other native wildlife and vegetation Discover the park’s abundant birdlife through the network of well-maintained sandy trails, which will also guide you to unearthing some rare and protected flora including lichens. There are a number of entry points to the Park, the one closest to Kestrels Nest is just a few minutes walk. If you are heading out of Kestrels Nest turn left down Kestrel Terrace and then right on to Quondong Avenue, follow that till then end and there is an entrance on the corner of Quondong Avenue and Acacia Terrace. A feature of the Park is the Acacia Terrace wetland site. This is well worth a visit and is on the Park boundary just south of the Boomerang Avenue/Acacia Terrace intersection. Please exercise care and avoid coming too close to the pond if you decide to enter the wetland itself. The Aldinga Scrub is a delicate environment and you are requested to remain on the marked trail at all times to avoid damage to vegetation and minimise erosion. Most of the trails throughout the Park interconnect so it is almost always possible to complete a circuit without retracing your steps. Allow a couple of hours to explore and enjoy our Park.

COASTAL CLIFF WALK The coastal cliff walk from Aldinga Beach to Port Willunga is one of a kind, as you make your way along the coastline you cant help but take in the epic panoramic vistas of a stunning coastline. Unlike many metro beaches near Adelaide, Willunga Beach is at the foot of some huge rocky/sandy cliffs. The different levels create a miraculously scenic region, but also a fantastic spot for walking. You can begin the coastal walk from the Aldinga Beach boat ramp (or the Willunga Beach car park - if you have driven over there). It is approximately 4km from one beach to the next, making it an 8km return walk. Whether you’re on the sand, or on the path, the entire length is very flat. So long as the tide is out far enough, we suggest walking one way on the beach, and the other way on the cemented path along the cliffs, allowing you to enjoy the beach up close, and also from above. If you want to walk a longer distance, you can extend your walk in either direction. Going south, you can go as far as Silver Sands Beach (walking along the beach from Aldinga to Silver Sands). Or heading North, it can take you up to Maslins Beach. This entire length is around 8km, or 16km return.

Sightseeing

As you are driving down Sellicks Hill, it is very hard not to notice this huge Buddha statue which stands amidst Nan Hai Phu Tao temple. The only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, this statue is the goddess of mercy and sits majestically along the southern coastline. If you are looking for a peace of mind and somewhere to go on a Sunday afternoon, this is the place to visit. Every Sunday, the temple holds chants from 11 am till noon, followed by a vegetarian lunch. Cameras aren’t allowed in the worship area, but can pay your respects to the deities by burning incense that is provided by the temple. The temple is still under construction and they are looking for donations to complete the rest of it so if you are feeling a bit generous, for $50 you can get your name written on a tile which would be later used in construction. Food and Wine

After the mandatory visit and purchase at Miss Gladys on Sea, cross the road to Maxwells Grocery for a great coffee (we rate it the best in Aldinga) and an equally enjoyable veggie (or beef) burger - using locally sourced ingredients of couse. This place is a little bit hipster and a whole lot of fun - part cafe, part grocery store, you can pick up some lovely organic goodies. Plus don’t leave without trying the amazing raw snickers slice - it’s life changing. Maxwell’s Grocery is about a ten minute drive from Kestrels Nest in the recently revived hisoric Aldinga township (Temperance Precinct - enter via Old Coach Road).

Just around the corner from Kestrels Nest this little wine bar is only about a 3 minute drive (you could walk (or stumble) it home in about 20min or less. We love the idea behind this little gem - to provide a place that allows everyone to experience a variety of drinks and food from surrounding local businesses in one place - and they have nailed it. You can pick up some local goodies and enjoy some delicious food. They really have it all covered - from artisian coffee, delicious breakfast, tapas, big bites, little bites, platters and desserts you will be sure to find something on the menu that takes your fancy (Juan in a million dog is our fave). They also do wine and beer flights - plus check out their website for upcoming events like quiz nights or wine tastings. Happy hour is 5pm-7pm Friday and Saturday - check out their website for details.

This friendly family owned and run business brings quality Indian food to the Esplanade. Rated 4.5 stars on trip advisor it has loyal custumers and you can see why. It overlooks the beach and whilst the decor is simple, the Indian food is authentic and delicious, and their wine list is impressive too. They also offer standard cafe food - like fish and chips which we often grab and head to the beach. Their indian menu is also available take away and perfect for a night in.

Set in the old township of Aldinga, in the building that originally housed the General Store for 80 years, this humble little country bake house offers a menu of predominantly back-to-basics recipes done extremely well. The bakery offerings use many ingredients sourced from local farmers, growers and milk companies, and their pie of the month is built around a quality local product too. One of the most popular is the steak and stout pie made with McLaren Vale Goodieson Brewery stout and the Drunken Lamb Pie uses wine from Aldinga’s Big Easy Radio. There is something for everyone with gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan diets all catered to. The combination of the smell of freshly brewed coffee and baked bread is hard to beat - as is their vanilla slice and sourdough loaf.

This place is a jewel on the Fleurieu Peninsula and well worth the visit. Its about a 10 minute drive along the Esplanade, and we suggest you make a booking - it’s super popular and for good reason. Fresh offerings from the sea and local produce are presented with a visual flair that excite without being a substitute for the essence of exceptionally good food. The salt and pepper squid is a favourite, either as an entree or a main. Crispy, salty, moorish morsels. Hot tip – order more than you think you’ll need, because you won’t want to stop eating this dish. From fish and chips in the kiosk, to a three or four-course meal in the restaurant, or just drinks on the deck, head down there and take in the smashing views (the stunning summer turquoise waters of Gulf St. Vincent, the beach and cliffs, the seascapes that change with the seasons, and the history of a Star of Greece shipwreck). Trust us, you’ll never want to leave (we don’t). Opening hours differ for the restaurant and Kisok, and change over the summer - best to check their website, and you can book online. If you are thinking of heading to the restaurant best to book well in advance of your stay as this place books out well in advance.

This is a tiny eatery with oodles of noodles and flavour. A 20-seat restaurant built around a long table, simple Singaporean dishes and a strong sense of community. They have kept it really simply with a mini hawker style rotating menu (posted on Facebook of just three or four dishes a week) and describe themselves as a kind of community “cook house”, the village kitchen where people meet, talk, and enjoy the food.It has an intimate dining space – with a bookshelf, bespoke furniture and a homely feel. A 15 minute drive from Kestrels Nest, Russell’s is set in an 1850s Welsh miner’s cottage in Willunga. Request a cosy side room near a potbelly stove for a secluded evening. Bringing the pizzas to your table is a mix of locals, from 13-year-old students to people in their late 80s. The vibe is community- and family-minded. They offer some of the best wood oven pizzas around, fresh salads, homemade bread with house dukkah, and seasonal desserts. The oven was built over two decades ago and while the pizzas are a must, it’s the meatballs you have to try. Fired in the wood oven, they’re filled with feta and herbs, and are melt-in-your-mouth good

It’s about a 20 minute drive from Kestrels Nest to the centre of McLaren Vale, and well worth the trip, it really is a wine lover and foodie’s paradise. Boasting more than 80 vineyards and with incredible culinary offerings around every corner, you can happily eat and drink your way through the region. We do fancy ourselves a bit of food and (a lot of) wine so these are our top picks: Lunch: Red Poles, Ekhidna Wines Restaurant, d’Arenberg Cube, Gather at Coriole, D’arenberg d’Arry’s Verandah, Maxwell Wines Restaurant, The Currant Shed, Pizzateca, The Salopian Inn, The Barn Dinner: Little Wolf Osteria at Mitolo Wines, d’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant, The Salopian Inn The classic wineries: Paxton, Wirra Wirra, Coriole, Hugh Hamilton, d’Arenberg, Angove Something a little bit different: Down the Rabbit Hole, Alpha Box and Dice, Flower Cellar Door and Café, Dowie Doole, Eat @ Polly’s

Nestled amongst 400 acres of vines in the picturesque Whites Valley (between Aldinga and Willunga) is The Flower Cellar Door, run by the family behind Willunga Plains Flowers. It’s not a cellar door as you know it, though. As the name suggests, they offer an amazing range of fresh cut flowers, as well as hot and cold drinks, light meals and a selection of sweet treats. There is plenty of space to sit with your coffee and admire the floral view.
