(I drove my kids cross country on a “donut tour” in a Uhaul van, photodocumenting a donut in every state we passed through.) But these— oh these— are likely only surpassed by the fresh beignets at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. They come with a story too, about an invading general who brought the recipe. Ask the guy frying the donuts. Marvelous specialty coffee also for sale.

Can speak from experience-- great barbecue, New York style, with thick spicy sauce (in two levels of heat) and the perfect sides-- great slaw and baked beans, which is what I went for. Going back again as soon as I can!!

A genuine Catskills swimming Hole. Cool but not frigid water, fine for kids (supervised of course), wonderful on hot summer days, and just a short walk from the road. Drive towards Woodstock, take a left turn on Zena Road, and Little Deep is located just a few hundred yards, marked by a parking area on your right, opposite the small historical marker for Zena Cornfield. No other signage. Unlike its larger, more famous swimming hole up the stream, Big Deep, it is not marked "No Trespassing."

Road rip— Kingston!
Kingston is the largest city in the area, and if all you know of it is the big box stores, you are not impressed. But let’s take a road trip back few hundred years and over to the Hudson waterfront for another Kingston altogether.
In the early 1600’s, the Dutch developed a trading settlement on the shores of the Hudson and began trading with the Esopus Native Americans. Over time, the Dutch settlement governed by Peter Stuyvesant became and English town, and then the capital of New York State at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The town was burned by the British in a particularly brutal attack in 1977, resulting in nearly total destruction and devastation of the residents, who fled for their lives to tiny Hurley, a village not far from Lilac House. (This event is re-enacted every two years, with the next due in October 2021.)
The area of the waterfront sports two museums a fascinating and varied neighborhood with the right mix of must try foods, intriguing shops, and historical and educational venues. You’ll find the Hudson River Maritime museum, which accommodates small groups of four people during timed 1/2 hour visits, and is NOW offering one day woodworking classes (make your own Adnirondack chair or live edge coffee table!— register and stay at Lilac House while you’re here for the class…https://www.hrmm.org/woodworking.html). Nearby you can check out (in spring through fall) the Trolley Museum as well, offering trolley rides on the waterfront. http://tmny.org
And come May, you will be able to take tours on the Hudson River from the same area, on the Rip Van Winkle touring yacht: https://www.hudsonrivercruises.com. Yelp reviews are enthusiastic about the scenery, mansions, lighthouses and bald eagles, not so much about the service, food, or historic narration.
But for now, let’s just take in the culinary and retail therapy opportunities along Broadway, the Strand, and the area around the TR Gallo waterfront park and promenade. Let’s start with Spruce, a home and design store with a fierce, almost stark design sensibility. Spacious by local standards, it invites at least half and hour of exploration while you consider throwing out everything you own and starting anew with the finds Spruce has to offer. Nearby, drop into Milne Design and Antiques “not your typical antique store” showroom http://milneinc.com , and see if you can find Kingston Wine store open for an eclectic selection of wines and ciders from around the world https://www.kingstonwine.com.
In the next block you will find Clove and Creek, a venue for simple but elegant items for the home, including a collection of fine English brushes (!) that make you want to clean something, as well as scented candles, fine cookware and a few simple garments. Down a tiny adjacent alley, look for imported items of art, sculpture, pottery and basketry, all invitingly displayed, at the new Folk House Collective. https://www.folkhousecollective.com . The cake shop was closed when I was there on a pandemic freezing weekend, but the Yelp reviews rave about the bourbon cake. http://enchantedcakesinc.com/#front-page-5 . Maybe, get one but DON’T EAT IT YET, because now you need to choose between Mole Mole Mexican food https://www.facebook.com/Mole-Mole-1447869508859742/, Savona’s Italian trattoria, and Mariner’s Harbor Seafood and Steakhouse with outdoor dining facing the river and a varied enticing menu. https://shiptoshorehudsonvalley.com Good luck with that. I would probably just pingpong between the three of them until one of them offers you some menu item you can’t leave town without trying.

Let’s drive North this time… to Hudson, easily the most sophisticated and stimulating village I’ve discovered so far. Drive into Saugerties and from there you can either take the fastest route along Highway 87 north (tolls) or the meandering rural and scenic route along highway 9 W. When you reach 9G on the other side, you MUST take a detour to your right to drive up to Olana State Historic site, where painter Frederic Edwin Church created a fantasy castle with Persian inspired turrets, extensive pathways and plantings, and a view of the great Hudson River that has changed remarkably little since he painted there in the nineteenth century. In fact, think about taking a picnic lunch, as the grounds invite one to lounge at one’s ease and watch the lazy river…
But now we need to drive just a few minutes north into Hudson, with its iconic downtown Warren Street lined with elegant buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Hudson has a colorful history, being at one time the fourth largest city in New York, and at another famous for its vice industry, prompting multiple raids on brothels, gambling houses, and other dens of iniquity which seem to have vanished.
Meander down Warren Street (you won’t be able to see it all unless you devote the whole day to the effort, so just begin somewhere and keep walking…) You will discover an irresistible selection of antique stores— the kind you really want to see, clean, inviting, and hiding affordable treasures you can easily see in your own home. My favorite was Finch, which features both new and old pieces, including authentic mid-century modern pieces in excellent condition and with realistic prices that may have you flipping out that credit card.
Another favorite retail spot is called “The Quiet Botanist”, which describes itself as “A botanical apothecary and dried flower shop.” Imagine perfect bouquets of dried flowers in all hues, arrayed all around you in a space that is scented with natural aromas of herbs and perfumed candles. You’ll also find edible delights, not the least of which are small glass jars of dried edible flowers for teas or novel culinary creations. Hard to leave this place, but there’s a line at the door, so you must…
The Second Show is a well curated community thrift shop where you are sure to find something you are delighted to wear or place in your home. They were closed when I was there, so I missed out on the experience, but even the window shopping was tantalizing.
“Fluff” features knit items, most of which are made from alpaca, look squishy soft and hard to put down… they sell online, and are closed now but reopening April 15th.
Are you hungry yet? Check out Swoon kitchen bar for inventive and varied new American fare, or Ca’Mea for traditional Italian (one of New York’s twelve best places to get pasta, per I Love NY magazine). The unexpected and authentic flavors of El Salvador are hiding out in Casa Latina Pupusas Y Más , a little off the beaten path. Or if you’ve decided to go back to Olana, stop at Talbott & Arding Cheese and Provisions for quick and varied gourmet to go.
Have to mention The Spotty Dog, which is an unexpected combination of a bookstore and a craft beer nirvana. it was still in Covid lockdown when I visited, but ought to be opening up soon— from the sidewalk it looked, well, just like the kind of bookstore you really want to drink beer in while you browse the books…
Keep walking! You’ll find fine jewelry (Geoffrey Good) , a tea shop you could spend all day in (Verdigris Tea), a perfumery (Source Adage), a new bakery that specializes in sourdough (Breadfolks)— don’t stop!
OK, and if you’re the guy who brought his fishing tackle instead of his credit card or appetite, there are some great public fishing venues along the Catskill creek just on the other side of the river, so head on over.
Another day gone— you had better rebook Lilac House right away. These road trips aren’t going to take themselves, you know.

Bring the whole family and spend a day tucked away in a Catskill mountains paradise." Not particularly strenuous, and unlikely to be crowded.

Exciting hike in all seasons, but can be steep and slippery, so exercise caution. Be aware that the town of Hunter does enforce parking restrictions and will tow violators. Also, note that currently, Kaaterskill Falls can only be accessed from the Laurel House Road and Scutt Road parking areas. The Molly Smith parking area and the Kaaterskill Falls Trail from Route 23A to the base of the lower falls will continue to remain closed for trail construction.
