Smallholding in the village which sells the best organic vegetables, eggs and asparagus (when in season). The Veg Shed is open on Wednesdays and Fridays. Look out for farmers Liz and Hugh, plus their friendly terrier Berry.

Probably the best rural pub in England (OK, we're biased because its the most perfect 20 minute walk from our house). A truly charming and unspoilt traditional pub with excellent food. Best to book a table at weekends. Parties of 2-4 should ask for a cubby hole near the bar. Bigger groups should ask for the table nearest the fireplace.

Simply beautiful, especially in the summer when the Walled Garden looks like a Jane Austin novel. The food and cocktails are very good - all fruit, veg and flowers are grown in the garden, and all meat is sourced directly from local farms . Check their website for regular special nights - we love the Pytfire Suppers. Book an outside table if the weather is good, the garden is heaven.

An interesting local pub. Derelict for years, it was recently saved by Swallowcliffe locals who invested funds to bring it back to life. The interior is warmly modern, with all furniture made by local furniture designer Matthew Burt. The atmosphere is more 'restaurant' than 'pub', and the food is consistently good. The bar is a lovely place to sit for a pint and a packet of crisps.

A local institution, always buzzing with louche locals and weekenders. Friday evenings can get quite wild. The interior is gorgeous, with just the right amount of scruff to balance out the chic. The menu looks great: if the food occasionally disappoints, no-one cares because they are having such a good time. Always book a table in advance, and take your dog on a picturesque pre-lunch walk around nearby Fonthill Lake to work up an appetite. Nominate a designated driver in advance.

Run by Ashley, this is a gem of a fishmonger. His fish is always fresh, high-quality & responsibly sourced. A friendly place for a chat!

Our favourite local butcher: knowledgeable, helpful and not stupidly priced. They source meat from local farms. Be sure to pop in to Ludwell Stores next door, which is one of the best community village shops in Wiltshire.

Worth visiting if in Shaftesbury. Reeves are a local bakery chain that make seriously good sourdoughs, among other things. Get loaves sliced in the machine if you want to make toast.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Beckford Bottle Shop is a wine merchant with sofas and tables. Staff take their wines seriously and tasting is encouraged. The house wines are great; beautiful labels mean there's no shame in leaving with the cheaper bottles. This place is popular among locals for a weekday post-work chat, and customers merrily spill out of the door at weekends.

Arts & Culture

A local jewel. This amazing thatched tithe barn hosts a programme of shows featuring international and local artists throughout the year. Though the prices can sometimes be eye-popping, the atmosphere is never stuffy or unwelcoming. Check the website for info on latest shows and events. Messums Cafe offers simple lunches, great cakes & coffees.

Glorious Medieval architecture. Go to marvel at the best surviving copy of the Magna Carta and to climb the tallest spire in Britain (not for the faint-hearted). Listening to the choir at Evensong is a profoundly spiritual experience.

Parks & Nature

Highest point in Wiltshire. Visit on a clear day for 360 views across Cranbourne Chase. It is sometimes possible to see the Isle of Wight from here, but our favourite bit is the circular wooded copse which emanates wild magical energy. A very good place for kiting.

Just under an hour away is Swanage: our favourite seaside jaunt. Corfe Castle is worth a visit, and you can hire bikes nearby to ride cross country to Studland Bay and Knoll Beach, with its fantastic sand, cafe and sea kayaks for hire. Alternatively, drive to South Beach - probably the prettiest beach along Studland Bay. Or to Shell Beach, which allows BBQs & fires. In summer, we like arriving at 5pm (when everyone else is going home) for a swim and a beach supper. In Winter, Studland Bay is a great place to observe starling murmurations at sunset.

Bimble across the train line from Wardour towards East Hatch, and (with some help from the locals) you will find 'Flowers of Hatch'. Park next to the signposted field, collect a bucket and secateurs from the shed, then cut as many flowers as you like from the field planted with sweet peas, dahlias, daisies, lupins etc. Pay £5 into the Honesty Box and head home with the biggest bunch of flowers you've ever seen!

Take a walk to see the newly renovated Sutton Badges, just south of the A30. From house, turn left and follow road up the long slow hill to other end of the village. Turn right at the top onto Lagpond Lane, then turn left down bridleway on the next sharp right-hand bend, which will take you to A30 (just west of Sutton Landrovers Garage). Cross the busy road and continue along bridleway, heading towards the escarpment. You will see the new Sutton Badge on the left, across a field. If you keep walking, upwards and bearing right, you will reach a permissive path which follows the curve of the ridge west. The sunset views are unbelievable. Give yourselves 2 hours for a really decent walk.

Sightseeing

Always worth visiting, especially if you aim for the end of the day when the coach parties have gone. If you want to get really close, check out Stone Circle Access through English Heritage. They don't advertise, but it is possible to arrange a private tour around the Stones before opening hours, if you organise yourself some months in advance.
