If You Like it Fresh: Local Atlanta Farmer's Markets

For those who seek the freshest of the fresh, want to know the stories and faces behind what's being purchased, and don't mind making a half/day of it, here are the ones over time I've tried, are open, and I still recommend. One of these markets hosts camps for kids to work and learn urban farming. My children will remind me often about how resentful they are for my sending them to such a "horrid child labor camp". (insert wicked laughter here) Evidently, it wasn't the work they minded, it was all the mosquitos. (insert wickeder laughter here) But I digress. Enjoy these local markets.

Buford Highway is the unofficial headquarters for Atlanta’s ethnic eats. Here you’ll find a huge supply of exotic ingredients (not only fruits and vegetables) and goods related to specific countries. Living in California, I still struggle to find Z'atar seasoning as good as I find at BHFM in Atlanta. Go figure. Vietnamese, Korean, Mexican, South American, Caribbean, West African, European-whatever ingredients or ethnic food varieties you’re looking for-you’re bound to find it at this Atlanta farmers market. And there’s something new and different each week. WHEN TO GO: Open daily 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. WHERE TO GO: Buford Highway is located approximately 15 miles from downtown Atlanta, stretching from Buckhead all the way north to Buford. 5600 Buford Highway NE, Atlanta, Ga. 30340

The DeKalb Farmer’s Market focuses on global fare, proudly displaying the flags of nearly 200 countries represented by vendors inside its market. In fruits and vegetables alone, there are more than 450 varieties available. The prices are fantastic compared to a regular grocer, plus there are a lot of natural herbs and spices and quality cuts of meat. If you’re searching for something different, this Atlanta farmers market is hard to beat. Only seasoned shoppers would dare visit on a weekend. It can be chaotic inside this huge market. Better to come during the week if you want to avoid crowds. WHEN TO GO: Open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. *Closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day WHERE TO GO: At the intersection of East Ponce de Leon Avenue and Laredo Drive, two miles inside I-285 off Exit 40 (East Ponce de Leon). 3000 East Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, Ga. 30030

Within One Mile: Local Food/Shop/Rx/Retail

The purpose of this list is for your planning. This will help you map out what's nearest to where you'll be when you're in the home, so you can decide what you want to schlep there, and what's easier to get when you arrive. Also, for those coming to stay for post-op from nearby medical facilities, you have multiple pharmacy options to fill prescriptions. This list is the grocers, drug stores, gas station, and liquor/beer & wine stores, all within *1 mile from the home*. Anything towards Ponce we recommend driving at night, which, with your groceries, duh! And those are mostly where the bigger grocers are. (I totally didn't trip in my sandals while walking home in the dark from Publix on a "beer and avocado" run. Don't know how many times the bag split.)

Pharmacy: (404) 898-0360 Hours: M-Sat 9AM-9PM Sundays 11AM-6PM This Publix has the nicest employees. I've dealt with the customer sevice people, cashiers, baggers, deli, bakery, Apron's Meals, produce, and butcher depts and they all define kind and helpful. It's a mile away from the house, so technically walkable, but I'd double check there are good sidewalks door to door, and that they're well lit at night. Just don't wear your sandals if you're walking up to Publix at dark on a beer run. You're likely going to take your vehicle, so you can load up on heavy staples for your visit to Atlanta. There is ample parking. Here is their weekly ad: https://www.publix.com/savings/weekly-ad?nav=secondary_nav They also have a Pharmacy (404) 898-0360. That was a tough one to overcome, but you shook it off, finally. This Kroger was previously the location of so many homicides, it became dubbed, "Murder Kroger". Directionally referenced, specifically clarified when in comparison to the nearby Ansley Kroger. Grateful for how far Kroger, and this community has come, I can recommend this beautiful "Beltline Kroger", which takes my breath away every time I enter. It really is so vibrant, colorful, and alive, as if in honor of all the souls lost on that same site. I've been consistently impressed with their produce. There are kiosks with various food options—the return of regaled B’s Cracklin Barbecue, plus a “pub.” An outdoor patio area fronting the Beltline is very much alive with patrons and sweaty cyclists looking for a breather as they cruise through the city. Same thing with the grocery runs over to anything on Ponce, in the dark. On foot. I still don't recommend it. 725 Ponce de Leon Ave NE. I've been consistently impressed with their produce. https://youtu.be/2UFc1pr2yUU That is the risk you take when you elect to visit the Whole Foods Market down on Ponce. It's an awesome, store, don't get me wrong. But it shares a parking lot (at one end it's double decker), with a few retail stores at the entrance, then all these other massive retailers (Staples, PetsMart, TJ Maxx, The Home Depot), and the shared parking lot can make anyone go off the edge. My guess is things have always been real, so for now, these are the COVID-19 updated store hours: Guests 60+, at high risk or with disabilities can shop in-store or with Prime on Amazon.com for pickup from 7 – 8 am on Fridays. This is the only co-op in the neighborhood. https://www.atlantamagazine.com/dining-news/the-survival-of-sevananda-atlantas-only-co-op-grocery-store/ Sure things may cost more than the bigger stores, but this is supporting the community in a more direct way, and it's very niche, for those who have hardlines about what they will/won't put in/on their bodies. Make sure this is the "correct" CVS in your mind. This is the one down on Ponce de Leon Ave., at the entrance of the Whole Foods shopping center. I like this one because, you pull into the entrance of the shopping center, then immediately turn right again then suddenly you’re in the CVS drive-through line to pick up your Rx's. You can't do that at the one that's closer to the house. This one you don't have to get out of the car, so at this point, it's a toss up between going for a 10 min walk and entering a pharmacy, or driving less than a mile and doing the drive-through one. I feel better about it when I combine it with other errands. 680 Ponce De Leon Avenue Ne Atlanta, GA 30308 404-892-1164 Store & Photo Hours M-F 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM Sat 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM Sun 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM Pharmacy Hours M-F 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Sat 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sun 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Who knows if it's the cheapest gas, but it's where you can walk up and get gas, air for your tires, ice, some eggs, milk, beer, Tums, cigarettes, whatever. I'm not askin'. You can get it ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT. You can escape 910 to "go get XXX" at the gas station, then find yourself next door at Moes and Joes. That's on a different list. And they have Krispy Kreme donuts there. You can get one late night, take it home, heat it up, and WOW! The owner is a sweetheart. Everyone who has worked there has been super kind. And you know they deal with plenty coming out of those bars late at night. Drunks buying donuts. 1025 North Highland Avenue Northeast Atlanta, GA 30306 24/7

Places to Get Outdoors in the Pandemic

Get out, spread yourself wide, stand fifteen feet from someone, so when everyone gets their freak on, no one can tell you're with each other. In all seriousness, this is a list of places (all walkable) that will allow you and yours some space to be outdoors. There are some old towels in the basement. Please use those for park play (vs. the nicer sheets and towels), and enjoy getting messy. Here is some land near the land you're renting.
This is such a great park. It's practically across the street from the house. I've met some of the nicest *fellow young parent* neighbors there when the kids were younger. Check out the story on Wiki about the history behind this park. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Howell_Memorial_Park You can look at the columns and see the house numbers of all the homes that were there before the park. What a story. And it's really fun to watch people play vollyball.

https://www.piedmontpark.org/aquatics-pool/ This is so much fun in the Summer. You can walk there with a wheelie cooler. (Note: I had one, but it wheeled away, so if someone wants to do this, they need their own now.) Pay an evening pass and bring joy to some kids. And yourself. Meet neighbors down there. Meet new neighbors down there. It was recently renovated and it's nice. It's .7 mile from the house, you can walk your kids, your dog down there, and it's a large, beautiful, well-maintained park. https://www.piedmontpark.org/directions/ In it are other attractions, such as the pool, the farmer's market, and the dog park. Pre-pandemic it was the local venue for the largest festivals. Now it's a great place to socially connect with plenty of distance between us. And also a perfect place to socialize kids and dogs while locked down in a pandemic.

Well, how could I not recommend it? It's a 21 min walk there (or you could drive, but street parking can may mean a few block walk). https://www.piedmontpark.org/dog-parks/ https://www.piedmontpark.org/maps/?location=25 And when your blissful, exhausted pup gets back to 910 Virginia, all will be settled, quiet, ready to snuggle, be left alone, whatever. A well- exercised pup is a well-behaved pup. It's really fun to let your dog run wild down there. Observing, meeting other pups and their parents. My kids also still love to go to the dog park. It helps keep them socialized, too. #pandemic

Corner Favorites

When I finally get settled in somewhere after traveling, whether into a hotel, or a home, and it's time to go out and get dinner, the last thing I want to do is get back into a car and travel again. In fact, I prefer walking up to the corner of VA and North Highland and supporting these great places... over driving, anytime.
COVID19 Update: They are doing social distant dining, take-out, and of course the wine shop is open. https://murphysatlanta.com/ Murphy's is a neighborhood staple. The menu is consistent, the service, and you can always count on running into local neighbors (because of all those same reasons). Sunday brunch is a favorite. If the group is small enough, you can sit up at the bar, share plates, and at noon, order booze. https://murphysatlanta.com/reservations/ Mon – Fri 11am – 8pm Saturday 8:30am – 9pm* Sunday 8:30am – 8pm* 997 Virginia Avenue NE Atlanta, GA 30306 (404) 872-0904
