A protected, natural biosphere, Grandfather Mountain allows visitors of every desired level of activity to get close to nature. Drive to the top of the mountain to park and walk across the mlle-high bridge, visit the bears and otters at the animal rescue area and stroll through the remarkable museum. For those wanting a more intense level of activity, hike to famous Calloway Peak via ropes, ladders and a gorgeous wild trail.

An intense, 2.5-mile roundtrip hike takes you to breathtaking views of the gorge. Note: this trail is popular so try to visit earlier in the day.

A "gotta see and experience" bridge built around the side of the Grandfather Mountain biosphere in order to protect its rare flora and fauna. No pedestrian activity is allowed on the actual bridge but you'll never forget the feeling of flying through the air over mountains once you've driven it! Gorgeous photos may be taken of the viaduct from 221 heading south. Continue on the Blue Ridge Parkway exit, and head north for a few miles. You'll know when you've reached it!

No pedestrian activity is allowed on the actual bridge but you'll never forget the feeling of flying through the air over mountains once you've driven it! Gorgeous photos may be taken of the viaduct from 221 heading south. Continue on the Blue Ridge Parkway exit, and head north for a few miles. You'll know when you've reached it!
With acres of hiking and horse riding trails, lake walks, craft guild shopping and historical tours, the Moses Cone Manor and its trail system are integral parts of the Blowing Rock experience for visitors and locals alike.

The Blowing Rock, North Caroline’s oldest tourist attraction, is worth a visit for its views alone. Its namesake town is a charming village with a gazebo, park, and plenty of restaurants and shops on and around Main Street.

Sugar Mountain Resort has something for everyone, every season. The largest ski resort in NC, Sugar offers skiing and boarding for every level. The resort boasts an excellent snow sports school --- at which your host, Katherine, has taught skiing for thirteen years :) --- and it caters to every age.
In non-winter seasons, check out Sugar for tennis, mountain biking and festivals.
