South Park City is an open-air museum located at the west end of Front Street in the town of Fairplay in Park County, Colorado. Open from May 15 through October 15, the museum is a historic reconstruction of a mining town from the days of the Colorado Gold Rush and the later Colorado Silver Boom in South Park in the late 1850s through the 1880s. The museum contains thirty-five authentic relocated buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts that depict many of the economic and social aspects of life in a gold or silver mining town in Colorado in the late 19th century. Two of the buildings, the South Park Brewery and the Summer Saloon, are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A log structure known as "Father Dyer’s Chapel" was a hotel in Montgomery, Colorado but was dismantled, moved to Fairplay, and rebuilt as a church in 1868. It is named for John Lewis Dyer, the itinerant Methodist clergyman who preached in the area from 1861 to 1877 and is one of the sixteen founders of Colorado memorialized in the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. The museum was opened in 1959 after two years of preparation by the South Park Historical Foundation.

Outdoor Recreation

The Middle Fork of the South Platte River through Fairplay is generally a fast, braided riffle with little suitable trout habitat. During 2006 the Park County Land & Water Trust partnered with the Town of Fairplay to improve fish habitat along this section of the river. Improvements focused on establishing and maintaining a single channel, creating overflow side channels, adding new pool habitat, maximizing the length of low-gradient riffles, and creating overhead cover for trout. This portion of the river has become a very popular public fishing area, above and below the Fairplay Beach Recreation Area (reservoir).

Kenosha Pass is probably the best place to view the changing aspens near Denver. It offers both an East and West trail option with gradual ascents to stunning views. Starting at 10,000′ the initial elevation gain on the trails make for easy to moderately strenuous hikes, all depending on how far one decides to travel on these beautiful segments of the Colorado Trail. Vantage points can be accessed about 1/2 mile up both trails offering views down into the high country plains of South Park and out to the Rocky Mountains.

Fantastical shaped 1000-year-old trees high in the Colorado Rockies. The Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area is a remote stand of trees off a 4WD road near Alma, Colorado. This grove of bristlecone pines was given protected status in 1964 due to its uniquely shaped trees influenced by the winds blasting off nearby 14er, Mount Bross. The area sits at 11,700 ft. and is only accessible by vehicle in the summer after winter's snow has melted. A high-clearance 4WD vehicle is needed to reach the parking area or alternatively you can hike the road in. The trees cover several acres and provide numerous options for sunrise/sunset or night photography; the night sky is extremely dark but there is nearby light pollution from Alma and Breckenridge. This is a sensitive area so Leave No Trace Principles should be followed to ensure its protection. The 4WD road to the area closes as soon as the first significant fall snow covers it.
