This is a disused quarry that has been turned into a nature reserve and a sculpture quarry including a sculpture by Anthony Gormley. Large and small stone sculptures are dotted around the quarry, some free standing and others carved directly into the rock. It's worth going off the main path to find some of the hidden pieces. Sculpture workshops are run from here and anything too big to be taken home is added to the collection.

Kings Barrow Quarryis another disused quarry that has been turned into a nature reserve - great for exploring, getting a sense of the quarry workers' achievements and if you're interested in geology you can see all indifferent strata. If you walk through the quarry you come to the High Angle Batteries - a defensive system to protect Weymouth Bay from invasion by the French. The nearby Verne Citadel was built in the hillside to house a garrison but is now a prison. The Jailhouse Cafe has the best views on the whole of the island and is worth visiting.

Carry on past the museum and Rufus Castle to Church Ope Cove. If you don't fancy the long climb down (and back up) the steps there is a viewing point at the top with benches. When the sky is blue and the sun shines the beautiful, stony beach glows. If you turn off the steps halfway you will find the ruined church and pirates graveyard

You can walk out to Portland Bill, drive or catch a no 1 bus that runs out to the Bill through the summer months. You can visit the lighthouse where there is a small exhibition and climb the spiral staircase the top. The Bird Observatory is housed in the original lighthouses. Portland is a key stopping point for migratory birds so a great place for bird watchers. The warden there also monitors the arrival of butterflies and moths. The Bill has a unique character with a great cafe, beach huts, a blow hole when the sea is rough and boulders to clamber over. Walk along the coast path and you might see deals and dolphins

Chesil Beach Is a natural phenomenon created by the effect of tides and waves. It stretches from Portland round to Lyme Regis. The sea can be tough here, clattering the stones on the beach. Ithas a strong undercurrent and is not safe for swimming. The only part that is suitable is near Quiddles Cafe which is great for seafood. Half way along the causeway back to Weymouth is Billy Winters Cafe which sits on the side of the marina where you can watch the wind surfers or hire kayaks and paddle boards. Across the road is Taste cafe run by Dorset Wildlife. They often have organised nature walks into Chesil Beach.

There is a small beach at Castletown - black barge beach- next to Henry VIII's castle run by English Heritage. The beach is sandy / stony with a gradual gradient and is safe for swimming, paddling and crabbing. Past the castle is the D Day museum. I haven't been there yet but my family have and enjoyed it. It's very hands on with a tank to climb on, real guns ( unloaded) and various bits of uniform to try on.

Weymouth beach is perfect for children. The large sandy bay slopes gradually to the sea and is safe for swimming. There are various activities including peddle boats to hire, a punch and Judy show and amazing built Sandgate structures. The harbour area is very picturesque with pubs , cafes and restaurants
