Great roof top dining with a view of the harbor and excellent small plates and unique dishes. Try the blueberry pomegranate sangria. This is my go-to restaurant in Boothbay. 12 The By-Way, Boothbay Harbor. Maine 04538 207.633.0400 www.theboathousebistro.com

Faaaaantastic sandwiches, pizza and snacks as well as nice souvenirs. For something unique try a slice of their breakfast pizza. The food isn't cheap, but it's worth the price. Some of the sandwiches (Vinnie the Shipbuilder, Ocean Point Club, etc.) are big enough to share.

Fantastic place to learn about Maine ocean life. There are touch tanks where kids can pet sharks and skates (they're little don't be afraid) and items you will find in local tidepools.

A great local walk/hike through the woods along the tidal inlets of the Kennebec river. There's a small bridge over the oven's mouth which rages when the tide is rushing out.

Want to get up close to a lighthouse or absorb some history. Take a day trip to Pemaquid Point and visit the lighthouse. The views are breathtaking, the surf is often spectacular and you can stop in Damariscotta for lunch.

City/town information

Want to spread your wings? Try Damariscotta or nearby Pemaquid for a day trip. The shops and restaurants in Damariscotta rival those in Boothbay. A local gem is Reny's - it's kind of a small-town Wal-Mart with charm. Continue down the peninsula to Pemaquid and vist the lighthouse.

A true coastal Maine town with all the tourist trappings, local haunts, working waterfront and down-east charm you expect. Take a sightseeing cruise, fishing trip, whale watch, sunset sail or other adventure from the wharfs along the harbor. Visit the factories (Ice Cream, Fudge and Taffy) and indulge your sweet tooth. Find the perfect souvenir or stunning artwork at the many shops and galleries. Have lobster on a picnic table at the Co-op, a lobster roll at Shannon's Unshelled (shack in the public parking lot on the water), traditional coastal fair at McSeagulls, or book a romantic dinner at the Ports of Italy or the Thistle Inn.

Grimes Cove walk to Cunner Rock

This is a fantastic walk along the rocky coast - perfect for a picnic. Walk west along Shore Road to Grimes Cove (where Rte 96 begins) Continue along the small driveway/shoreline path in front of the red cottage. The path continues along the shore in front of a couple cottages until you emerge onto the rocks. (Note the remainder of this walk requires balance and a little climbing). Continue along the rocks for up to a mile until you come to an area of broad white rocks in front of a group of cottages. There are amazing views, tidepools and rocky slopes along the way.

Plan for variable weather.

The weather on the coast of Maine can be tricky. It can be sunny and hot in town and foggy and cool along the shore. You might need flip flops and sunblock one day and a sweater and raincoat the next. Pack accordingly. I recommend packing layers including short and long pants and shirts, a sweater or fleece, windbreaker, raincoat, warm socks and a hat. In early spring and fall you may also want gloves and a warm coat. It can be chilly in the morning so think cozy comfort pj's or lounge wear. Boothbay is casual, as is most of Maine so don't worry about the dress code - there isn't one.
