Dining options I can vouch for all over San Diego.
Z Cafe is one of two excellent restaurants right here in Bonsall. It offers breakfast (until 3:00pm), and lunch and dinner options. Much of the menu has a Hawaiian theme to it, but they also feature fresh sushi, sandwiches, burgers, and more. Definitely a local favorite.

I can't say enough good things about Curbside Cafe. The owner, Joe, is from the East Coast, and really knows his diner food. The good part is it's not greasy like New Jersey, which makes it even better! The pancakes are light and fluffy and come with real maple syrup. He even has potato pancakes! Their enormous cinnamon rolls are enough for 3 to 4 people, and have been voted best of San Diego multiple years, I believe. The coffee is sublime, the bacon is always done to perfection... what's not to love? They close around 2pm tho, so get there early for breakfast or brunch!

Belching Beaver is a favorite brewery/bar in downtown Vista. Just opened before Covid hit, so the decor is very upscale, and there are plenty of tables. I believe they have live music on weekends, too. Definitely worth a try, and not too far from the house.

The Yellow Deli is an interesting place to eat just off the main street in downtown Vista. The restaurant owns a farm in Valley Center, and a majority of their ingredients come from the farm. Needless to say, it is literally farm-to-table, and tastes fabulous!

Tony P's (as we affectionately refer to it) is a great place to grab a beer and a pizza with friends, or to watch the game. The one in Oceanside off the 76 is smaller, and usually very busy on Fridays and Saturdays. The location in Escondido is much larger and easier to find a seat almost anytime. They offer some pasta dishes and salads besides pizza, and wine if you're not a beer drinker. All the food is excellent, but a "can't miss" is the garlic Tony Bread!

In better times before the plague, Privateer had comedy nights every Tuesday where they would bring in local acts, some out of LA, to practice new material on the locals. Order food and have a show - great for something to do during the week, and you'll be kicked out at 10pm, so you're sure to get up in time for work the next morning! Their coal-fired pizza is outstanding, but they have many other menu items that will also delight your tongue when you're not laughing or enjoying their many options for brews and wine.

This is hands-down some of the best homemade ice cream I've ever had. Located on State Street in Carlsbad Village, it's about 30 minutes from the house, but this is worth the drive. Spend the afternoon in the Village, then top it off with ice cream. There's always a line, but it moves fast. This place is no secret from the locals! There is also a location in San Marcos on Las Posas Road, but the shopping center isn't an extraordinary location. If you're only after the taste, no worries about picking up there, but if you want the *experience,* go to the Carlsbad location.

Barrel Republic is tons of fun. Set up like a frozen yogurt shop, but with beer and cider. You go in and get a bracelet to set up your tab, then pour your own glasses in any amount you like. This is great if you want to try a bunch of different stuff, but beware! They will cut you off after a certain number of ounces so as not to promote irresponsible drinking. Barrel Republic also offers a great menu of food - very tasty dishes! Definitely fun.

If you're up for a drive, LeStat's is an all-night coffee shop with fantastic beverages, and some light sandwich fare. They also have LeStat's West Music Venue next door to the coffee shop, where you can often see great local musical talent. Once in a while they also have comedians on stage. I've seen Gregory Page play here, and I think back in the day, Jason Mraz may have performed here, too. It's down in the Normal Heights area of the city, pretty far from my house, but the overall feel of it makes it a great place to spend some time after an exciting day in San Diego. The best part is, no matter when your day ends, they're always open! LeStat's has four locations now, but the original is the one in my heart and has the best atmosphere. :)

Pre-covid, this Speakeasy was the best. Located downtown behind a false door advertising a lawyer's office, this place was truly like a 1930s speakeasy where you needed a password to get past the dude at the door. One night when we went to a Padres game at Petco, we were waiting for the crowds to disperse and ducked into the whisky bar that resides above Huntress Steakhouse. (I think we actually entered through the entrance for Lumi? Not even sure. It was definitely upstairs.) What a find! This bar boasts some of the finest Japanese whiskys available, including Nikka. Nick the bartender also introduced me to KaVaLan, a Taiwanese whisky. You could check out the meats served at the steakhouse curing in a display case in the wall, too. Had a great time that night. Not sure if the bar is part of Huntress or one of the other restaurants in that building, but it definitely overlooked Huntress from the loft upstairs.

Truly authentic Cuban food in the heart of Old Town Temecula. The Cubano sandwich was fantastic, and the mojo sauce is to die for. A great breakfast find on a back street in Vista. Mom's Kitchen is one of the oldest continually running restaurants in the area. Locally owned and operated, they have an extensive breakfast menu and I will personally confirm their killer Belgian waffle with berries. There aren't a ton of tables because it's a small space, but if you've got the time to wait for a table, it's worth it.

The Yellow Deli has a couple locations around North County, and I love the one in Valley Center. It's a bit of a drive to get there, but you'll go along roads with some amazing views, and nicely rolling hills. The restaurant is a bit out in the middle of nowhere, but a fun place to dine. They have indoor and outdoor, which are equally charming settings, and the food is always good (homegrown on their own property). You'll love this place if you're into organic foods and sustainable living.

If you like the calm serenity of meditation gardens, SRF in Encinitas should definitely be on your list of places to go. Check the hours online, as they change with the seasons, but if you can fit it in, the energy is divine. Featuring many exotic plants and flowers, this is a garden that Yogananda originally cultivated decades ago. The koi pond has some of the largest fish I've ever seen, the empty swimming pool provides a bit of an eerie touch, and the views of the ocean can't be beat. Plenty of benches and quiet spots to meditate, this garden is just a joy to be in for a simple walk-through, or a meditative afternoon. Free to the public, but there are collection boxes among the trees to support maintenance of the gardens. Well worth any cash you feel like contributing. Not really a place for children because you must be quiet while walking through, and if you're not, the guards are not afraid to tap you on the shoulder and ask you to bring it down a level.

The Cabrillo Monument is way down south - almost to the border. In fact, you will likely get message on your phone about picking up a signal from Mexico's cell towers while you're there. I have not personally visited the monastery yet, but it is literally right up the road - about a mile, I think. I hear the garden is beautiful to walk through. Before Covid restrictions, you could arrange to have breakfast and prayer time with the monks, but I've heard they will not be doing that until it is safe to gather in large groups again.

Nothing beats attending a performance of the San Diego Symphony at Copley Hall. Alas, San Diegans tend to dress somewhat casually for this, so you won't be out of place in business slacks/skirt and a nice shirt, but there is enough variety that even if you wanted to go dressed to the nines, I don't think anyone would bat an eye. I've done it! Copley Hall itself has quite a history, and the ushers are happy to give some background on the place if you arrive early. Also, if you're attending a Masterworks performance, be sure to arrive at least 45 minutes early to catch Nuvi Mehta's "What's the Score?" pre-concert talks. He covers the history of the music being played that night, gives interesting background on the composers, and is a fantastic storyteller.

Palomar Mountain is just to the east of my house. The road going to the park winds around quite a bit, but near the top of the mountain you'll find pine trees and even snow in winter! There is also an observatory, but I think you need reservations to visit, and I'm not sure how they're handling things during our plague, so be sure to call ahead.

The drive up to the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial is pretty impressive. It's a very windy road, but the views are amazing. At the top, you can view photos and information about the veterans represented there. Finding anyone specific could take a while, but it's nice to think about and appreciate even the people you don't know. You can really see out across the valley from the hilltop, too. Worth the drive, but it's truly just the memorial - no shops or information center.

Neighborhoods

Encinitas is my most favorite place along the coast. The main street offers such a variety of interesting shops, the beaches are clean and classic California, and Self Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens is a must-see. So many great reasons to spend an afternoon walking in downtown, with a quick trip over to Swami's beach to watch the surfers (or participate!), and enjoy a lovely dinner or evening cocktail at one of the many restaurants.

Vista is just south of Bonsall, and has spent quite a bit of their budget in recent years gentrifying the downtown area. Home to Mother Earth and Belching Beaver microbreweries, and the fantastic Vista Village Pub (an Irish pub) where you can my second-most favorite version of Bangers and Mash, Vista may be small, but it has an active nightlife. For the morning after, there is Curbside Cafe, with some of the best diner-style breakfast choices outside of New Jersey. Maybe because it's owned by Joe, who I'm pretty sure is from the NY/NJ area!

Oceanside is busy gentrifying its main street, and it's fast becoming a better place to hang out. Close to Camp Pendleton, there are many "boots" that hang out at the bars, but the addition of a couple more hotels in recent years has the tourist trade booming over there. Alas, these hotels are very tall and have blocked most of the good views from rooftop hangouts of the past (Hello Betty's restaurant, and Cabo Grill), but Mission Pacific rooftop bar still has a decent view of the sunset, if you don't mind looking over the pool, and Coco Cabana on top of the Brick Hotel is about to open. The beach is always nice, the pier is an interesting walk, and sometimes there is even an event in the band shell. Every Thursday Oceanside hosts a very popular farmers market. In the earlier part of the day it's mostly produce and food; they take a break in the middle of the day, then set up at night more like a street fair. The nighttime version has food as well, but it's along the lines of street food for dinner instead of produce to take home. There are a ton of booths selling locally made wares, and in summer it can be pretty crowded. Dogs are welcome and prevalent at the street fair, but please check the laws about how close they can be to any food booths. Usually you have to keep them back a bit.

The town of Fallbrook is just north of Bonsall. It has a quaint main street with shops, restaurants, and a local theater. Fallbrook, being the avocado capital of the world, hosts the Avocado Festival once a year, and an annual Gem and Mineral show. The Grand Tradition Estate and Gardens is not only a popular wedding venue, their gardens are open year-round and they offer upscale dining at The Veranda on weekends.

If you are LGBTQ, you'll be very comfortable in Hillcrest. It's a bit of a drive from my house - probably a good 40 minutes - but there are so many great events in that area. Kava Root Bar is a cool place to check out (not alcohol, per se - Google "kava root" and you'll see), and the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Sundays can't be beat. Before Covid restrictions, I attended storytelling events down there, and usually the annual Pride Parade goes through Hillcrest. Lots of fun shops, restaurants from many cultures, and an extensive bar scene. You could easily spend the day exploring.

La Jolla is where "the old money" lives, crossed with the very young students of UCSD. Lots of coffee shops, fancy restaurants, art galleries, a museum, their own symphony, a theater, an aquarium, and miles of rocky cliffs with a small break for a beach. While you're over there, be sure to say hello to the resident seals who have commandeered what's known as "the Children's Pool." The seals are truly wild, so you can't touch them, but they are cute to look at from the safety of the bridge. Better than Sea World, in my opinion.

Carlsbad Village is made up primarily of restaurants and bars, and has quite an active nightlife, even during our plague. So many to recommend: Compass is nice for some very tasty light fare and heavy cocktails, Campfire is great for more serious eats (and still more variety of cocktails), Viggilucci's and Cicciotti's offer pricey Italian cuisine, Caldo Pomodoro is Italian and a bit more reasonably priced. O'Sullivans is an Irish Pub, Oak + Elixir offers tapas, Barrio for Mexican, or just have a glass of wine at Witch Creek Winery. You'll definitely want to drop by Handel's Ice Cream afterward - the line is long, but worth the wait.

Old Town is a great place to spend the day shopping. Lots of Mexican-themed shops, outdoor kiosks, some great restaurants, the historic Whaley House, the Wells Fargo museum, the Seeley Stables (a museum of coaches, carriages, and other vintage transportation), the old schoolhouse, and the very creepy Cemetery of El Campo Santo, with headstones dating back to 1849. Just up the hill you can also view the Presidio - the first mission in San Diego.

Little Italy has become a beautiful place to sit and people watch. Covid inspired many restaurants along India Street to build permanent structures for outdoor dining, and the city also created a plaza with open-air food options and a fountain. So much good food! No worries, though, there is plenty close by to see. Waterfront Park and the Maritime Museum are a short stroll, so you can walk off those carbs quite easily!

Temecula has a very charming "Old Town" section with lots of shops and restaurants. It's a bit of a tourist trap on weekends, but there are some shining places you'll want to visit, if you can. Weekdays are not quite as hectic. Note that most shops close early in Old Town, so you'll want to be there before dinner. Be sure to check out the Temecula Olive Oil Company for olives, oils, soaps, olive wood gifts, and other sundries. The Old Town Spice Shop is an awesome place for teas and spices, and great gifts. There are a couple antique shops, but Fourth Street Antiques is my favorite - it's a little off the beaten path. Temecula also features awesome Jeep wine tours (see other listings in my guidebook), and the Pechanga casino. This is easily a full day and night of exploring.

City/town information

Idyllwild is a cool little artist town tucked away in the trees to the north of my house. It takes about an hour and a half to drive up there, but it's an easy day trip. Romantic little shops and restaurants inhabit mostly wood-constructed buildings that form a circle around a central park. You can walk the whole town in about 15-20 minutes, if you're not pulled into each shop to find treasures, nor distracted by all the amazing smells of the local food and coffee. Lots of fun to poke around up there for the afternoon.

Julian is a gorgeous mountain town about an hour away from my house. Fun to do as a day trip, you can take a tour of an old mine (they will turn the lights out completely at one point - amazing how dark things are underground!), sit at the coffee shop to people-watch, have your fortune told, wander through the stores searching for treasures, and be sure to stop at the famous Julian Apple Pie Company for a warm treat before you leave!

If you really want to be out away from people, check out Borrego Springs, CA. Way out in the desert, it's considered an official "dark-sky area," so it's great if you have a telescope or other night-sky viewing apparatus. Not much to do during the day but check out the giant iron sculptures that randomly dot the landscape, or take the 40-min drive to the Salton Sea, but there is a place called The Palms at Indian Head Hotel, which is a bit creepy and has a slight (and I mean slight) historic value, and a pool with a bar out back. It's clean and the rooms are spacious. Not a bad place to stay, especially if you like feeling like you're in a B-rated horror film without actually being in one.

Unique Experiences

Truthfully, I only just discovered this and have not been there myself yet, but I fully intend to go because are you kidding me? This must be better than the zoo! An up-close, personal experience with exotic animals from all over the globe, hosted by professional wildlife educators, right here in Bonsall! Prices are a bit hefty if it's only a couple people, but if you have a group of four or more, and you split the cost, it's actually cheaper than going to the San Diego Zoo. (Which is also a very fun day, but a bit further south.) I will update this after I make my own first visit, but wanted to put up the suggestion immediately for guests who may be looking for unusual things to do while visiting North County.

Just over the hills of Valley Center, to the east, are the Galleta Meadows Sculptures of Borrego Springs. Anza Borrego is true desert hiking, so make sure you take your water bottle! 130 enormous sculptures pop up out of the dry desert floor in unexpected places. There are many maps online to guide you to each one. These are larger than life and a lot of fun to take photos of. A permanent art installment, they are rusty but magnificent, and there are no restrictions or ropes - you can walk right up and touch them, if you like. Dinosaurs and Jeeps and horses and dragons... they've got it all out there.

For 30 years, I've been an avid fan of renaissance festivals, so I can list off all the ones close enough to my house for a day trip, and the dates for each. The Renaissance Pleasure Faire is the largest of these festivals, and usually takes place in April–May. It's about a two-hour drive north from where I live, but well worth the time to immerse yourself in an Olde English village, complete with artisans, food, comedy shows, birds of prey exhibitions, live actors that roam the grounds in full costume interacting with patrons, and even a real joust! The faires are one of my passions, so if you're interested, feel free to ask when they are, and I'll send you the list so you can schedule a trip accordingly.

The Koroneburg Renaissance Festival usually takes place in May–June, immediately following the closing weekend of Renaissance Pleasure Faire (April–May). The site is located in Corona, CA, about two hours north of my house. This is the only faire within a day trip that boasts permanent structures on site. It's a bit smaller than the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, but is growing quickly, and focuses more on guilds that provide historical and educational info. They do also have artisans, food, shows, live actors, and a joust, but in a more intimate setting. Many of the artisans are different from those who exhibit at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, so if you plan well, you can hit both faires within two weeks and get a taste of medieval variety.

I have not personally experienced flying a falcon yet, but it's definitely on my list! A friend of mine has taken one of their classes and highly recommends it. He said it was one of the most exciting things he's ever done. Having experience with renaissance faires and watching the birds of prey shows for many years, this is definitely something that sounds exciting. I'll update my recommendation on this as soon as I've done it, and if you book my place and want to go, let me know and we'll make it happen! :)

If you're into antiques and spending a day finding unique treasures, Mission Galleria in Riverside is a fabulous place to go. There is SO MUCH to look at. I can't stress this enough! If you're like me, and like to wander around looking at every detail, you could literally spend hours in this place. Three floors of booths, rented and stocked by individuals, offer a wide variety of vintage items from dishes to books to clothes and more. Every time I go, it's like a treasure hunt, and also a trip back to my childhood, as I see so many items that are now "vintage" (am I *that* old??), which used to be part of my everyday life. Located in quaint Historic Downtown Riverside, there are restaurants and other shops on a wide brick promenade, so you can really make a day of it. This is definitely a day trip situation, but worth the drive. This area also happens to be where they hold Dickensfest every February. (Dickensfest is like a Victorian version of renaissance festivals.)

Waterfront Park is a fun place on a hot day. Dozens of fountains spray water into ankle-deep pools you're allowed to run through and wade in. Right across from the harbor, the view is something to behold with all the ships and sailboats, and makes for great photo opportunities. It's usually pretty crowded on weekend with families and folks trying to cool off in the summer, but it can also be a romantic stroll at sunset, with various colored lights on the surrounding historic buildings providing a nice background.

Public transportation in SD is only convenient in some areas

San Diego is a very large county, and getting around solely by public transportation can be a challenge. There are local trains called the Sprinter, which travels inland, and the Coaster, which travels along the coast, but the train stations are few and far between. I believe you'd have to take Amtrak to get to the LA area, and the stations there are also not always convenient. The buses are a bit easier, especially within the City of San Diego, but getting to one of those from my house is a mile walk, and we are so far north, you could spend half your exploring time sitting on a bus.

Highways are referred to as "The" plus the number

Where the East Coast usually refers to their highways by the proper names such as I-95 or I-40 or I-20, for some reason, the West Coast refers to their major roadways as "The 15" or "The 5" or "The 76," regardless of whether it's an interstate, highway, or a more local freeway.

Farmers Markets

There are so many farmers markets in San Diego! Some of the larger ones are: Hillcrest Farmers Market on Sundays; Little Italy Farmers Market on Saturdays (near the airport); Vista Farmers Market on Saturdays in the courthouse parking lot; and the Oceanside Farmers Market on Thursday mornings in downtown Oceanside. The smaller markets include Welk Resorts on Monday evenings, Mira Mesa on Tuesday afternoons, Carlsbad Village market on Wednesday evenings, Leucadia/Encinitas market on Sunday mornings, and so many more! Fresh produce is everywhere!
