The heart of Asheville can be found at Pack Square Park. It's a great place to start your foodie adventures, enjoy a performance, do some shopping, or just watch the locals and tourists go by. Try the French Broad Chocolate Bar, or hang out at Pack Tavern and watch a game. Don't be surprised if there's a protest of some kind going on... activists are everywhere in Asheville!

For plenty of variety in restaurants and shops all in one place, Biltmore Village is our favorite go-to venue! Located right outside the Biltmore Estate, we love to have breakfast, lunch, or Sunday brunch at Corner Kitchen. Village Wayside Bar & Grille is a low key, reasonably priced spot for lunch or dinner, with yummy salads, sandwiches, and more. You MUST go to Well-Bred Bakery, where the eclairs are the size of your head! And if you're in the mood for Mexican and a Margarita, try The Cantina. Nearby you'll find Moe's Original BBQ and Rezaz Mediterranean Cuisine, and for special occasions, the Red Stag Grill in the Grand Bohemian Hotel is awesome. There's a Ruth's Chris Steak House, too!

Another fun small town with an old-time Main Street, Weaverville is worth exploring for the arts and crafts shops and great restaurants like Well-Bred Bakery, Blue Mountain Pizza, Glass Onion, and our personal favorite, Stoney Knob Cafe--the most unusual, exotic decor and eclectic menu every! During "Covid Time," best to check to see what's open.

Lake Lure has been called the "Crown Jewel of North Carolina," and is known to many as the location for the " water lift" scene in the film "Dirty Dancing." There are trails to walk, and boat rides are offered nearly every hour. We love taking an evening boat cruise with a stop mid-way at a lakeside restaurant, offered in season. Positively magical during a full moon! You're close to Chimney Rock, so plan to see it too.

Brevard is a sweet mountain community with cool shops and restaurants, and something you won't find anywhere else: white squirrels! Not the albino variety, but a unique white fur that gives the city's Memorial Day festival it's name: The White Squirrel Festival! It's a fun event you won't want to miss if you're here that weekend. Missed it? Don't worry, you can still visit Brevard any time and find white squirrel merchandise in shops. If you keep your eyes peeled, and perhaps stroll around the Brevard College campus or other open areas, have your cell phone camera ready and you just might be able to snap a photo of a white squirrel and friends! There are a lot of things to do near Brevard. Visit Connestee Falls, 6 miles from Brevard on US 276 (Greenville Highway), address 5388 Greenville Highway, Brevard. It's 85' high, an easy walk in from where you park, and free. Looking for a bigger (and wetter) adventure? Sliding Rock is the most popular natural waterslide in North Carolina for generations. It is in Pisgah National Forest near Brevard. Slide down a 60-ft. smooth rock waterfall into a pool of chilly water. Bathrooms and showers are open and lifeguards on duty during warmer months.

Remember the waterfall scene in "Last of the Mohicans?" It was filmed at Chimney Rock State Park! Here, during "normal" non-Covid times, you can take an elevator to the top of the "chimney," a huge outcropping of rock with amazing views of mountains and Lake Lure below. During the "Time of Covid," you can still visit the park and hike the moderate-to-stenuous Four Seasons trail, which connects to other trails, so a great place to get your exercise for the day, the week, maybe the year! Check out their website for the latest open times and activities available.

When you want to reach the highest heights of the Smokies, and in fact the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in mainland eastern North America, you'll want to take a drive to Mt. Mitchell. It is located near Burnsville in Yancey County, about 19 miles northeast of Asheville. It's best to pick a clear day, otherwise your head may be in the clouds all day!

14 miles northeast of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway, not far from Mt. Mitchell, you'll find the twisted, jagged, rocky “crags” that give Craggy Gardens its name. These high elevation summits are home to the most spectacular floral display along the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway corridor. For generations, visitors have headed for the Craggies in June, typically the prime time for viewing the pink and purple blooms of Catawba rhododendrons that blanket the area. But don’t despair if you miss the peak bloom of the rhododendron, because there are many other blooms to see throughout the summer, including violets, blackberry, May-apple, and Turkscap lily. The Craggy Gardens Visitor Center is located at Milepost 364.4, with the spur to Craggy Gardens trails and picnic area at 367.6. At the Visitor's Center you can explore exhibits on the natural history of the region, open seasonally. Take a short hike up Craggy Pinnacle trail and witness a stunning 360-view of seemingly endless peaks and forested slopes. Why not take a picnic lunch along and eat amid natural beauty? Note that restrooms are open seasonally, and the visitor center and exhibits are wheelchair accessible.

Fans of Thomas Wolfe, considered by many to be one of the giants of 20th-century American literature, may enjoy seeing his childhood home immortalized in his epic autobiographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Wolfe’s colorful portrayal of his family, his hometown of “Altamont” Asheville, North Carolina, and “Dixieland” the Old Kentucky Home boardinghouse, earned the Victorian period house a place as one of American literature’s most famous landmarks. House tours are offered daily at half past each hour. Last tour leaves at 4:30 pm. Group tours by reservation. The house is located at 52 North Market Street, adjacent to The Renaissance hotel.

Looking or an exhilarating experience? Join the thousands of children and adults who slip and slide down Sliding Rock falls in Pisgah National Forest, about 8 miles from Brevard. Take a towel and a change of clothing, and be prepared to wait your turn to ride the chilly water (50-60 degrees!) down the 60-foot flat, sloping boulder. You'll have a splash landing in an eight-foot deep pool and swim a few strokes to the shore. If you're especially brave, you'll get in line and do it again! Not so brave (or foolish)? Watch from a rock or observation post. There is a place to change clothes, thank goodness!

For an out-of-this-world experience there's not much that tops the Asheville Drum Circle gathering every Friday evening in downtown Pritchard Park located on Patton Avenue at College Street. Young, old, nimble or not, anyone can participate by drumming, dancing or watching. A local tradition since 2001, the gathering takes place each Friday April-October, (and sometimes on warmer nights other months). It's amazing to see and hear the thunderous rhythm of the dozens of drums and people dancing as the music moves them. A celebration of culture and diversity not to be missed!

Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, enriches lives through the art of theatre by sustaining production excellence, nurturing talent, and inspiring creativity in a safe haven for artistic vision, life-long learning and creative risk. They normally offer top quality productions year round, however, they have closed for the remainder of 2020 due to Covid. If you visit in 2021, be sure to check and see if they are back in production, because a performance at the Playhouse is well worth the price of admission!

If you're short on time and can't make the rounds of artist galleries and shops, make time to stop in to one of two Southern Highland Craft Guild locations, either in Biltmore Village, the collection of quaint shops just outside the Biltmore Estate, or their location on Tunnel Road. The collection of arts and crafts on display is beyond the imagination... like a museum, only better, because you can take the art home! (If you have lots of $$ anyway!) Still worth a look, even if you are short on funds. And Biltmore Village restaurants are excellent, too!

Driving in Western NC

Driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway (and other mountain roads) isn't like driving on a highway. It's well maintained, but curves are plentiful and the speed limit doesn't get above 45. and is often 35mph or even 25mph. There are tunnels and overlooks where you'll want to pull over and take in the majestic view. Note that the BRP can be closed due to fog and icy road conditions. There are other narrow, winding roads lined with trees and with little or no shoulder, and locals may drive faster than they, or you, should. Don't go there! Take your time and enjoy the ride.

Get the Beat: the Asheville Drum Circle!

Every Friday night in the spring through the fall, there is an amazing happening in Pritchard Park in downtown Asheville... hundreds of people, about as diverse a group as you'll ever see anywhere, fill the park to watch, to dance, or to play drums of all sizes, shapes, and sounds. From the tiniest tot to the most wizened senior citizen, everyone has a marvelous time getting in the groove and tapping to the rhythm. Drummers arrive between 5pm and 6pm, and fill the air with sound until around 10pm. It's free entertainment, and not to be missed!

Foodie Heaven

If you're a foodie, you probably already know that Asheville restaurants and breweries are world famous! What are our favorites? Where do we start... there's Cúrate, a hip eatery serving amazing small plates; Bouchon, for locally sourced French comfort food; Zambra, if you're craving tapas with an Iberian bent; Hemingway's Cuba for casual Cuban cuisine and drinks; Red GInger Dimsum & Tapas; The Blackbird Restaurant for refined southern, or Tuppelo Honey (2 locations, one close to us) for the best southern food anywhere; and nearby Post 25, with something for everyone.

The Brewery Romp

Asheville has been recognized as "Beer City" for good reason! Local micro-breweries are everywhere, both downtown and closer to us. Sierra Nevada in Mills River is a fabulous, state-of-the-art brewery only 15 minutes away. Bold Rock Cidery is out that way, too, with yummy varieties you can enjoy in "flights," and often live entertainment that's free to enjoy. They have a food truck on site, too, typically. Asheville breweries include Highland Brewing Company, Hi-Wire, Catawba, Burial Beer, New Belgium, Asheville Brewing Company, Green Man. There are also fun pubs like The Thirsty Monk. Enjoy!
