Skiing
There is not too much around Sugar Mountain itself besides the ski resort but there is a mini ice skating rink at the base of the resort and a pizza place called Bella’s I always recommend past the entrance and up the hill near the Food Lion. They have good pizza and Italian food.

The other resort close to Sugar is called Beech Mountain resort and is worth the trek if you are looking for something new. It is about 20 minutes away past and through the town of Banner Elk.

Tubing
This is a great place to go tubing if you are with people who don't ski or are sick of skiing. It is an old ski resort they turned into a tubing hill so it has multiple lifts and slopes. It is a fun time all around.

Sightseeing / Hiking
Grandfather Mountain is a great way to see the area without having to expend too much energy. It is the highest mountain in the area and you can pretty much drive to the top. There is a little zoo and bridge at the top which is a mile above sea level.
You can also take the more strenuous route up to the top and make a hike out of it. The hike takes about 3-4 hours round trip and is very strenuous. If you are looking for a good workout and are a seasoned hiker this is the route for you.

Grandfather Mountain

You can also take the more strenuous route up to the top and make a hike out of it. The hike takes about 3-4 hours round trip and is very strenuous. If you are looking for a good workout and are a seasoned hiker this is the route for you.
Linville Falls
This is a great short hike in the area which offers great views and is good for beginners, families and people adjusting to the altitude.

Closest to Sugar Mountain is the town of Banner Elk and they have a couple of restaurants- Sorrento’s for Italian, Stonewalls for steak, Louisiana Purchase for fancy southern and the Banner elk Lodge and Cafe for breakfast in the morning and burgers in the afternoon.
If you go about 20-25 minutes the other direction you have the town of Boone which is the biggest town in the area. It has a university ( Appalachian State ) with 20,000 students and there are a lot of things to do there if you want to make the drive. It is home to three breweries and a couple nice restaurants like Vidalia's, Cobo's sushi, and has nice a rooftop bar at the Horton hotel. They also have a movie theater and bowling alley.
