Food Scene

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I am addicted to the simple pleasure of their margarita. Each component is just perfect, and perfectly cooked in the wood fired oven. Tuesday's are pizza and beer for £10, you can't argue with that!

Fabulous food (Especially Brunch!) Very friendly waiting staff, and the interior is light and airy and very well designed.

Good, hearty, unpretentious food. All delicious too with an excellent selection of items on the menu. The prawn, squid and peppers skewers and steak with an egg on top is recommended - cooked perfectly and delicious. Staff are lovely and very accommodating. It is a little off the beaten track but you can drive and park directly outside with no problem. Would definitely recommend it.

Drinks & Nightlife

Despite the name, this lovely bar and shop – one of several independent gems in Nunhead – doesn’t look anything like an off-licence. Its website labels it a ‘micro-pub’, but its colourful, light-filled, open-plan front room is probably best described as a drop-in centre for beer-lovers. The tiny back counter dispenses three draught beers – on our visit, these included two pale ales, namely Buxton Brewery’s sharp, citruous Moor Top, and Northern Monk’s smooth, fruity Monacus. In addition, there’s a 60-strong list of bottled beers, ciders and porters – mostly (but not all) from London brewers, all with clear, succinct tasting notes.

Almost 10,000 people signed a petition after the sudden closure of my local pub ‘The Monty’. It was known in New Cross and beyond for its steampunk look, grungy gigs and wild LGBT+ club nights like ‘Passionate Necking’, so Londoners wanted to know why we’d lost another small music venue. Its closure was shrouded in mystery. And then it sheepishly reopened under new management. There’s a classic cocktail list – from white russians to old fashioneds (at £7.50 a pop) – and they make a mean negroni, with ingredients sitting proudly on the bar. Seasonal ales are on special for £3.50, along with more pricy craft beers like an Easy Peeler from Bermondsey’s Fourpure.
