Introducing Valley of Furnas

The name of our house, Furnas Springs, is inspired by the mineral and thermal water springs of Furnas, considered by specialists to be the largest hydropolis in the world. The villa is located in the center of Furnas, on the island of S. Miguel – Azores, just a few minutes walk from the beautiful hot spring pools.

Furnas

The Valley of Furnas is, in fact, a volcanic crater which has been dormant since 1630, date of the last eruption. Geomorphologically, the Valley of Furnas forms part of the massif of the Furnas Volcano, one of the three central volcanoes active in the island of São Miguel. The air temperature varies between 10 and 16º C in winter, and between 20 and 25º C in summer. The monthly air temperature, averaged on an annual basis, is 15.1ºC, with a maximum of 19º C and a minimum of 11.2º C. Relative air humidity throughout the year is high, sometimes reaching maximum of 80 to 92%. This is chiefly due to the fact that the parish of Furnas is located at a considerable altitude and is rich in vegetation. The parish of Furnas thus enjoys a microclimate which, associated with volcanic soil and the existence of innumerable hydric resources, permits and encourages adaptation and great vegetable diversity.

Lagoa das Furnas is located very close to the village of Furnas that belongs to the municipality of Povoação da Ilha de São Miguel. Of volcanic origin, next to the lagoon it is possible to see some fumaroles resulting from volcanic manifestations. Beneath the land were created holes to make the traditional portuguese stews. Surrounded by very beautiful vegetation, the place invites you to ride around.

Next to the Lagoon is also the Chapel of Our Lady of Victories, which enchants those who contemplate it. The Chapel was built by José do Canto as a result of a vote formulated on the occasion of a serious illness of his wife. Inaugurated in 1886, the Chapel is integrated into the José do Canto Garden Forest next to the Furnas Lagoon.
