Muckross Traditional Farms, preserves in real life the farming traditions of rural Ireland in the past. Visit three separate working farms (small, medium and large), each complete with animals, poultry and machinery. The farm dwellings are furnished in traditional style, complete with dressers, settlebeds and mealbins. There is also a Labourer's Cottage, a Carpenter's Workshop and a Blacksmith's Forge. Muckross Traditional Farms takes you back to a time before the advent of electricity when all work was carried out using traditional methods. There are even costumed interpreters sharing stories and traditional scones and butter produced right there on the farm. In the back there’s a little petting zoo and even a bouncy castle. You will see a horse, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens and more. Parents can enjoy a sheltered picnic in our Woodland Play Area, while their youngsters have fun on the wonderful slides and swings.

Killarney National Park is located less than five miles southwest of the town of Killarney in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland. It is open year around and there is a visitor’s center at the Muckross House. The park covers over 25,000 acres, so you have plenty of areas to explore. In 1932, Killarney National Park was created when Muckross Estate was donated to the Irish Free State. It was the first national park in Ireland. Within the park, you will find mountains, lakes, and even waterfalls, but Killarney National Park is more than just a place to admire the natural beauty. The history of the park is interesting too. There is something for everyone!

Killarney House and Gardens is a treasure of the Killarney National Park that is located on the doorstep of Killarney town centre. The house and gardens offers a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the busy town. Its weaving pathways through carefully manicured gardens provide an oasis of calm. Much more than that, Killarney House is an ideal starting point for a journey exploring the wonders of Killarney National Park. The ‘Golden Gates’ that stand guard at the main entrance form a portal to the wonders of the National Park beyond. As you pass through these (black!) gates, the sounds of the town fade away and the magic of the Park begins to wash over you with each step you take. In recent decades, the splendour of Killarney House & Gardens lay hidden behind high walls in one of the lesser visited parts of Killarney National Park. Although the grounds were always accessible, the house itself lay neglected and the surrounding gardens had long surrendered to the wild. The much loved Cherry Walk was a popular local pathway to the Knockreer area of the National Park. Yet few veered far from the cherry blossom -lined avenue to explore the environs of Killarney House. The relevant obscurity that befell the house and gardens was hard to comprehend given its proximity to Killarney town. Following the completion of extensive restoration and reconstruction work in 2016, the house and gardens have been restored to their rightful place as the gateway to Killarney

Beware of the stretch! If you’re not familiar with this trail, Cardiac Hill is a steep and difficult ascent up hundreds of steps along the slopes of Torc Mountain. Don’t let this put you off the walk because when you reach the top, feel the burn in your legs and wipe the sweat from your brow, you can reap the rewards with panoramic views of the McGillycuddy Reeks, Lakes of Killarney and Killarney National Park. After a few deep breaths you can begin the traverse over the face of Torc, enjoying the views, nature’s fragrances and the knowledge that you don’t have to walk back down the steps! The rocky path leads down to forestry where you continue on the path until you meet a junction; turn left here and carry on down to the starting point once again. Parking is available in the lower Torc car park or on the right hand side of the road directly after the lower car park. Cross the road and take a right along the path, you can’t miss the first steps jutting out on the left as you reach the base of the hill.

This beautiful beach is only 30mins drive away. The Blue-Flag Inch Beach lies on Daingean Bay on the Dingle Peninsula. Visitors to Dingle will find this place well worth a stop as it is a perfect place to come at any time of the year to blow away the cobwebs. When you actually see Inch beach the name may seem a little ironic for its expansive sands stretch for around 4 miles, across the entire south-west side of the Inch Peninsula. There is a surfing school directly on the beach and the place is popular with surfers and other water-sports enthusiasts. There is plenty of parking along the length of the beach. It is possible to drive your car right onto the sands, although cars which drive too far down the beach often get stuck in the sand. Inch Beach has views over Dingle Bay and the mountains of Kerry. It has been used as the set for various films, including Ryan’s Daughter. Sammy’s Restaurant is directly next to the beach and serves Dingle Bay oysters as well as the usual streaks and cakes

Ross Castle sits on the edge of Killarney’s lower lake and was built by O’Donoghue Mór in the 15th century. The Castle came into the hands of the Brownes who became the Earls of Kenmare and owned an extensive portion of the lands that are now part of Killarney National Park . Legend has it that O’Donoghue still exists in a deep slumber under the waters of Lough Leane. On the first morning of May every seven years he rises from the lake on his magnificent white horse and circles the lake. Anyone catching a glimpse of him is said to be assured of good fortune for the rest of their lives. The large rock at the entrance to the bay is known as O’Donoghue’s prison. Ross Castle was the last stronghold in Munster to hold out against Cromwell. It was eventually taken by General Ludlow in 1652. Ross Castle is open to the public during the summer months. Tomies Wood Loop Walk. The new access road takes you closer to the entrance of the wood, shortening the total distance by around 3 km compared to the original 9 km walk. Today the main loop walk is approximately 6 km and takes between 1.5 to 3 hours to complete depending on your pace and whether you also visit O’Sullivan’s Cascade. There’s a few ups and downs but it’s suitable for most ages and levels of fitness. The trail is unsurfaced and is a little rocky in places, especially around the furthest point of the trail. After a lot of rain, it can get muddy so be warned. Wear sturdy walking boots if you have them. If you have babies or toddlers you could use a solid ‘off-road’ pushchair to get around the loop. When accessing the woods you may need to lift it over a second barrier at the very entrance to the trail. You may find a baby carrier easier. After entering the woods you’ll soon come to a fork in the path. If you go right (anti-clockwise) you’ll be on the high-road. If you go left (clockwise), you’ll be on the low-road. As it’s a circular walk, both bring you back to the same point. O’Sullivan’s Cascade Walk. One of the highlights of Tomies Woods is O’Sullivan’s Cascade. It’s a spectacular waterfall which runs into Lough Leane. If you don’t want to complete the full loop walk, a round trip to the cascade is a great option. The distance from the car park to the cascades and back is roughly 3 km and takes between 40 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on pace. It is said these magical cascades used to run with uisce beatha (whiskey) and that Fionn MacCumhal, Chieftain of the Fianna, lived above the cascade. Sadly, when the English invaded the whiskey turned into water. If you develop a taste for a drop after a day’s walking, you could visit the Beaufort Bar in Beaufort village. They have over 200 different types of whiskey to sample. If you want to only visit the cascades, access them via the low-road (left/clockwise path). You’ll see a sign for the cascade approximately 1.5km into your walk on your left. Follow this track downwards, then bare right. You’ll have to descend approximately 130 steps to take you down to the cascade. If you have a pushchair you’ll need to leave it near the top.
