Food & Drinks

Zadar’s signature drink is advertised all over town, splashes of cherry red embellishing uniform walls and bursting out of billboards. After olives and grapes, maraschino cherries are the third largest crop in the region and they have gone into the commercial production of the sweet-yet-slightly-sour liqueur Maraska since the 1700s. Most cafés and bars will sell it, matured in special oak casks and poured from a particular type of bottle encased in hand-woven reed. Revived in modern times, the liqueur has long been an essential element of sophisticated cocktails such as the Aviation, created at the Hotel Wallick in New York in 1916.

Classy Foša's gorgeous terrace juts into the harbour, and its sleek interior that combines ancient stone walls with 21st-century style. The main focus of chef Damir Tomljanović is fresh fish, plucked from the Adriatic and served grilled or salt baked; the beef tenderloin with truffles is another star. Also try the Adriatic shrimp with smoked-mussel gnocchi.

Ledana's gorgeous garden setting and cheesy music choices make it a good place for a trashy night out. Party nights see guest DJs, dancers and (occasionally) live bands entertaining the troops. If it's chilly outside, grab a seat in the circular 19th-century ledana (icehouse).

Harbor Cookhouse & Club sits on the waterfront of Zadar harbour, unsurprisingly, offering impeccable views of the water and of Zadar's old town on the other side. Decked out in the fashion of a stylish yacht, this coastal eatery is certainly one to have on your 'must-go' list if you're visiting the area. Popular with locals and tourists alike, you'll find something here to suit at all times of day; whether a coffee to start the morning, a cool glass of vino over a light lunch, or a few beers with your dinner. There are offers each day, a business lunch menu proves exceptional value. The à la carte menu is very much that, with the meals on offer changing. If available, try the seafood burger.

Sakarun, one of the most famous beaches of Zadar County, is located on the northwest coast of Dugi Otok island. Near the beach are the villages of Verunić, Soline and Božava. Its reputation comes from its whiteness of the sand and cleanliness of the sea, and it is surrounded with a pine tree forest which offers welcome shade in the summer. It is about 800 metres long, and at 250 metres from the shore it is only 3.5 metres deep, which means that the space for bathing is extremely large and shallow.
