Take your time when driving these parkways! They are beautiful & historic. Many hiking trails, day use areas (picnic), horseback riding, are available. Some of the most stunning views & vistas in the Smokies! They are very close to our cabin too! Take a picnic lunch and make a day of it. Many of these parkways connect or are very close to each other. Enjoy!
The Cades Cove Loop winds for 11 miles through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a picturesque drive with a backdrop of the mountain peaks and its lush, rolling greens. Europeans settled the Cades Cove area between 1818 and 1821. Today, visitors to Cades Cove can enjoy the largest variety of historic buildings in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When traveling the scenic loop road, plan to get out and visit the restored buildings that include three churches, log homes, cantilevered barns and a working mill.
Access the Cades Cove Loop from Laurel Creek Road, Parson Branch Road or Rich Mountain Road—the latter two roads are closed during winter. The Loop is a one-way (one-lane) paved road. The scenic driving tour through the Cades Cove Loop takes approximately two to four hours depending on traffic. Because it’s a single-lane road, be prepared to stop frequently—the slow pace makes it easy to enjoy the amazing mountain landscapes, wildflower meadows and diverse wildlife.
The gently winding road offers many places to stop, park and stretch your legs while taking in the scenery. Halfway through the Loop, make a point to stop at the Visitors Center. Photo opportunities are ample and restrooms available. The water-powered mill is near the Visitor Center is a must-see as well.

I recommend it because as a visitor to TN, you want the ability to see beautiful scenery close to where you are staying, and this is def one of them. You can stay in your car and drive thru it or you an pack you a picnic and find a place to eat and go for a hike. I suggest you go early in the morning or in the evening. If you are cyclist, the park is closed to motorists 2 days of the week, so you can even cycle the loop! Its fantastic & free.

Awesome drive to cades cove make sure you take rich mountain road it's a one-way Gravel Road into the mountain about 7 miles but take your time drive slow. listen and watch very close into the woods for bears and other animals. Parsons Branch Road is a narrow, one-way, gravel road leading out of Cades Cove and ending at US 129. It is approximately eight miles long and mostly follows a creek throughout the southeastern portion of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park..
We wanted to explore this road, as well as Rich Mountain Road, during our latest trip to Cades Cove. We took Parsons Branch first, and, boy, was it interesting.
When we first arrived at the entrance, a couple of park rangers had temporarily blocked off the road. They told us someone had gotten stuck and were in the process of being pulled out by a ranger, but the road should be open at any minute. That little bit of information got us really excited, but nervous.
Only a couple of minutes passed between when we first arrived when the rangers reopened the road. Three trucks and a jeep entered before us, and then we followed. We were in an SUV, but it was front-wheel drive only. I was confident we could make the trip, despite the warning sign at the entrance.
The road was gravel, but very loose, especially on hills. There was one hill in particular that we had trouble getting up. In fact, we tried twice but kept getting rutted in the loose gravel. On the third attempt, I backed the vehicle down the hill, got a running start, and flew up the hill. We made it, but it was a real bumpy ride. Thankfully, I didn't bottom out hitting the ruts and potholes, but we were bouncing around in the SUV pretty good.
The road didn't offer any overlooks, but it was probably more scenic than Rich Mountain Road because of its 18 fords and picturesque creek setting. However, let me stress that you do not want to take a car down this road. It just won't make it. You need at least an SUV or a truck, preferably a 4x4.
Parsons Branch Road ends at US 129, better known as the "Tail of the Dragon" due to the nutty curves (There are supposedly 318 curves on an 11-mile stretch of this highway.).
The road is closed periodically for severe weather and is also closed for a time during the winter months. Very close to cabin, within 15 minutes.. its beautiful and very close to Cade's Cove, which is awesome. Will see lots of wildlife

Very close to Cabin, located in Townsend, also leads to Cades cove is second only to the over mountain newfound Gap road, and is very popular with motorists.

At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Only Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) and Mt. Craig (6,647), both located in Mt. Mitchell State Park in western North Carolina, rise higher. The observation tower on the summit of Clingmans Dome offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond for visitors willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the tower at the top.
On clear days views expand over a 100 miles. Unfortunately, air pollution often limits viewing distances to under 20 miles.
Clouds, precipitation, and cold temperatures are common at Clingmans Dome. Temperatures at the dome can be 10 -20 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than in the surrounding lowlands. In fact, the cool, wet conditions on Clingmans Dome's summit make the spruce-fir forest that grows there a coniferous rainforest. Proper preparation is essential for a good visit. Dress in layers and be sure to bring a jacket, even in summer.
Although Clingmans Dome Observation Tower is open year-round, the road leading to it is closed from December 1 through March 31, and whenever weather conditions require.

Pets and bicycles are not permitted on the paved trail to the observation tower, or on any other trails in the area. A bike rack is located near the beginning of the paved trail to park bikes while walking to the top. You will need to bring a lock with you to secure your bike.

The Gatlinburg Bypass begins at an intersection with U.S. 441 (Newfound Gap Road) within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park southwest of Gatlinburg. It travels generally northward for about half of its route before turning to the northeast and ending at an interchange with U.S. 321/441 (Great Smoky Mountains Parkway) just north of town.[1]
After splitting with U.S. 441, the bypass almost immediately crosses over the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. The road then begins to climb in elevation as it traverses Cove Mountain overlooking Gatlinburg from the west. It crosses over (but does not intersect) Ski Mountain Road, before winding its way over to its only mid-route intersection at Campbell Lead Road, which is accessed via a short two-way access road. After the intersection, the parkway begins to descend the mountain and again crosses the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, before ending at a second interchange with U.S. 321/441.[1]
Northbound traffic leaving the bypass can go either direction on "Parkway" (as Great Smoky Mountains Parkway is called locally for brevity): continuing north along the river (the Foothills Parkway "spur" to Pigeon Forge, also maintained by the NPS), or south into downtown Gatlinburg. Conversely, due to very limited space for an overpass and two lanes of heavy traffic that would have to be crossed without one, traffic from the north end of town cannot access the bypass to go southbound to avoid the almost constant congestion through downtown. At the south end, southbound traffic on either road can reverse direction to return north on the other. Very scenic and little motorist traffic. 4.5 mile bypass offers excellend views of downtown Gatlinburg. Fun to drive this curvy mountain road.

This loop encompasses many of the elements that make the Smokies special are on this very short loop. There are hiking trails here. one of them you don't want to miss is Grotto Falls, where the trail leads behind the eil like falls for an entirely new perspective of Roaring Fork.
