One of the first "picture palaces" to screen silent movies in 1919 and then the 'talkies' followed, Theatre Royal is firmly cemented in the evolution of Australian cinema.
Proudly one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the Southern Hemisphere, this historical business also holds an important place in the hearts of the Castlemaine community, coming to represent the beating heart of our vibrant, artistic town.

Sightseeing
Take a trip to Maldon on the steam train! Return trip tickets can be purchased online and can a great all day activity. The steam train drops you in Maldon mid day to explore the local historic town for a couple of hours before returning you to Castlemaine station.
If you want to catch the steam train going past the studio; it goes past on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday’s at 11.30am and returns again a bit before 3.30pm.

3 Kennedy StTake a trip to Maldon on the steam train! Return trip tickets can be purchased online and can a great all day activity. The steam train drops you in Maldon mid day to explore the local historic town for a couple of hours before returning you to Castlemaine station.

Another great activity is walking or riding the Castlemaine - Maldon steam train line. The most popular starting place is Muckleford station as the trail from there has been recently upgraded. However there is a trail that follows the train line from Martin street Castlemaine.
