Founded in 1945, the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia houses a permanent collection of more than 10,000 works of art as well as 20 to 25 temporary exhibitions a year. Strengths include American painting, works on paper, southern decorative arts and self-taught art, as well as works by African American artists and a Samuel H. Kress Study Collection of Renaissance and Baroque art. The official state museum of art, it offers free inspiration for everyone.

Built in 1897, Elder Mill Covered Bridge is one of only 13 functional covered bridges left in the state of Georgia. Drive through the beautiful bridge overlooking Rose Creek. You can pull over and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful Rose Creek.

After a devastating fire in 2009, The Georgia Theatre was rebuilt and reopened in August 2011, reclaiming its place as a keystone of the Athens music scene.
HISTORY:
The Georgia Theater is part of the Downtown Athens National Register Historic District and also the Downtown Local Historic District, which was designated in 2006. It was built as the Elite Theater in 1935 on the "foundation" of the original YMCA which had been constructed on that site in 1889. The upper part of that YMCA building was demolished in 1920 and it then served over the years as the Majestic Hotel, Masonic Temple, Dorsey Furniture Company, and Burnstein Brothers Furniture Company until the Elite Theater was built. It is unclear how much of the original YMCA building was incorporated into the Elite Theater.

The 40 Watt Club is a music venue in Athens, Georgia. Along with CBGB, the Whisky a Go Go, and selected others, it was instrumental in launching American punk rock and new wave music.
The 40 Watt Club was the primary performance space for numerous "Athens bands", including Pylon, R.E.M., Love Tractor, Dreams So Real, Guadalcanal Diary, The Primates, Modern Skirts, and others. Its DIY ethos and informality were instrumental in the fostering of punk rock and a "scene" in Athens, GA. In more recent years, the club has been the home-base for such nationally renowned local bands as of Montreal, Reptar, Drive-By Truckers, and The Whigs.
The club's owner since 1987 has been Barrie Buck.

Iron Horse (also known as Pegasus Without Wings) is an iron sculpture created by Abbot Pattison, who had been brought to the university on a Rockefeller grant to bring contemporary art to the South. In 1954, the sculpture was not well-received when it was placed in front of a freshman dorm and across the street from an athletic dorm. Students gathered. One painted the word “front” on its neck, and the defacement had begun.
“Of course, everyone laughed —was a big joke,” said Earl McCutchen, an art professor who witnessed the incident. “A couple of guys then went in a car and came back with some bushel baskets of horse manure and dumped them behind the thing. You could just see it generating right there. Every group had to outdo the group before.”
Mr. VanDerKloot said the pranks built up to the fire ceremony, adding, “They were dancing and chanting around the ring of fire.”
“I think it made them really angry that they couldn't destroy the thing,” said Wiley Sanderson, a member of the art faculty who had helped Mr. Pattison construct the statue. “One student said, This may not be art, but it's one hell of a welding job.’ “
O.C. Aderhold, president of the university at the time, ordered the Iron Horse removed from the campus when he heard rumors that students planned to use dynamite or acetylene torches to destroy it.
Years later, Dr. L.C. Curtis, a professor of agriculture at the time, asked the chairman of the art department, Lamar Dodd, if he could have the sculpture. Mr. Dodd consented.
“Just looking at it, I knew I wanted it,” said Dr. Curtis, now 78 and retired. “I collect conversation pieces. I'm a little bit of an eccentric.”
He put the horse on top of a hill on his farm, about 20 miles from the university, where Mr. VanDerKloot discovered it nine years ago when he was a university student. The statue still stands there.
