IN a corner of Shanghai’s old French Concession neighborhood, in the shadow of half-constructed high-rise apartment blocks, is something rather striking for a city going up at such a dizzying pace: a rooftop garden, complete with a resident rabbit and chicken.
The garden, planted with leeks, spring onions, lettuce and fig trees, is part of a new experiment in urban planning called Jiashan Market (No. 37, 550 Shaanxi Nan Lu; jiashanmarket.com), which its designers hope could become a model for environmentally sustainable, community-oriented development in Shanghai.
