Food scene

For an upscale but casual feel, visit this restaurant on the grounds of the Palmilla Golf Resort. Closer to the house than even downtown Port A, this place serves some of the best food we have found on the Island.

For solid, less expensive food in a beach-vibe environment, check out this old standby. Ample parking and central location are this place's best assets.

There are lots of little restaurants like this one in Port Aransas, but this is one of our favorites. One of the most loved activities by island visitors is the "you hook 'em, we cook 'em" option available at local restaurants. For that, La Playa is not to be missed.

Shopping

Port Aransas is famous for it Stripes gas stations, which though ordinary looking, sell just about everything you may need during your visit to the island. Did you forget contact solution, charcoal, or sunscreen? Need ice or beer? Don't pay the prices at the surf shops. This Stripes is as close to our house as it gets (and on the way to the beach!).

This store is like every other surf and souvenir shop on the island, but you just can't leave Port Aransas without taking a picture in the mouth of the giant shark out front.

Sightseeing

The beautiful, family-friendly beach is probably the biggest attraction in Port Aransas. Unlike many other places, you can drive right onto the sand, and even all the way into town through the beach. Please keep in mind though that to park on the beach requires a $12 permit, which you can buy at vendors like Stripes. Showers and port-a-potties are available all along the beachfront. For some important rules, see this link: https://www.cityofportaransas.org/beach_permits.cfm

The island is accessible on one end by a bridge (to Corpus Christi) and on the other end by a ferry (to Aransas Pass). Although there is always a wait, and it may not be the most practical means of travel, the ferry is a great attraction unto itself. Cars and trucks drive right onto the ferry, and you can even lower the windows or open the doors to see marine life pass by as you cross the bay.

There are several natural attractions on the island, but this is our favorite. A small park with a long marsh pier and a tower, this area lets you enjoy the natural ecology of the island at its best. Great for kids.
