A short hike or cable car trip to Pfingstegg is a great day out for all the family. There's a Rodelbahn, a highwire, play area for small children and a restaurant with terrace. Pfingstegg is a great look-out point at the edge of the Grindelwald valley, with hiking routes in every direction. Hike back down to Grindelwald via several pathways leading over the Gorge, or Milchbach, stopping at the Wetterhorn hotel for a drink, for example. Hike further up to the Bäregghütte 1.5-2 hours, via the challenging path. good footwork is necessary and children should be kept close! Not open in winter

Sightseeing

A visit to Männlichen is always uplifting! Enjoy the play area, take in the 360 Panorama, take a hike on the Royal Walk to the top (summer only) or stroll along the hiking trail to Kleine Scheidegg (summer and winter, depending on snow conditions). Guests can enjoy a coffee at the bar, a self service dining area, and the traditional restaurant with great food and professional service. Sporty tips: take the steep hike down to Wengen in summer! A head for heights is handy for the top part! Biking from Grindelwald village to Männlichen is strenuous, but worth it!! Even better with an Ebike. Note: biking is not allowed on the hiking route from Männlichen across to Kleine Scheidegg, but racing back down the hill you just rode up is superfun! Families: the Liselotte Cow hiking trail down to Holenstein is a must for families in summer

Jungfraujoch is a once in a lifetime trip for many - mostly because it's so expensive! It's definitely worth a visit as there's plenty to see both inside and out. You can spend an entire day up there, especially in summer, and not get bored of the views. I've visited Jungfraujoch more than most as I worked there for 10 years! It has changed a lot since then, sadly, so too has the glacier. If you do go on a clear day (best to go as early as possible to avoid crowds in summer) you'll witness breathtakingly beautiful views that will last a lifetime. But maybe whilst there, spare a thought for the glaciers retreating at a heartbreakingly rapid rate. I would encourage everyone to still do what you can, in any small way, to help us slow down the effects of climate change.

Mountain huts/hiking

Summer hiking. A mountain path (good footwear, footwork and a head for heights obligatory) leads from Hotel Wetterhorn to this cosy Mountain hut where the hosts welcome hikers and mountaineers day and night (a night in the hut is a great experience!) Only for experienced hikers! Do not attempt the hike in changeable weather!

Summer hiking, winter sledging. A charming hut at 2681m above sea level, one of the highest huts you can hike to in Grindelwald. Reach it from First station, Bussalp or on the long traverse from Schynige Platte...

It's a great view from here, with some summer hiking paths leading up to Faulhorn, across to First or down to the valley. Biking up here is also a great route to take. Bussalp is always popular for sledging in winter - take the bus up at night and sledge down. The 'longest' sledge run from Faulhorn swings by Bussalp too. The restaurant has undergone some changes in management and design in recent years, so we'll reserve judgement for now, but this is the only place to grab a drink on this side of the mountain!

Eating

A few places we can personally recommend
This is THE BEST little place for a well earned lunch, brunch or coffee and dessert, before or after a long day in the hills, or on the slopes. Easy to reach, on the bus route, ample parking and a great view! The hosts, Miriam and Bruno are always welcoming, friendly and helpful, whilst the infamous Chef Tilo is always creative and diverse with his menus! Original, delicious, locally sourced and made in-house. Check out their seasonal opening times online.

A great little place with a lovely summer terrace to sit out on and enjoy the view of Grindelwald while sipping homemade ice tea, or savouring a generous portion of local dishes. Their XXL meringue dessert is a yummy challenge for anyone with a sweet tooth! Great local hosts, Anita is friendly and helpful, with a great sense of humour. In summer it's often full so expect to wait a little and enjoy the view in the meantime! Usually closed Mondays

Grindelwald Terminal is a new cable car station, bringing guests to either the Männlichen mountain above Grindelwald, or to Eigergletscher, which is also a stop on the way to Jungfraujoch. Both places are worth a visit. Eigergletscher is situated on the Eiger's western elbow, and has breathtaking views on a clear day. Winter Ski pistes and summer hiking trails roll down the hills from here. Check out my Männlichen info under 'outdoor' on this list for what there is to do. Contained within the building along with the cable car station, train station and ticket offices are a multi-storey car park, several shops, a Bistro bar, a sport supplies and rental shop (rent a sledge in winter!) a small supermarket and a chemist. Worth noting is that 'Terminal' station, whilst being the place to get on and off the cable car, is also a train station along the train route from Interlaken to Grindelwald. However it probably was not the best choice of station name, as the train route doesn't 'terminate' here, it simply passes through. Many guests have got out of the train here believing it to be the final stop in Grindelwald!
