Favorite Places to eat in Savannah

A lot of these are places you would go for the food, not the decor. Mostly frequented by local folks, not the fancy, fine dining types of experiences.
Delicious and authentic Low Country Boil. $6 for a meal that will feed two. Take out only and their hours might vary so you have to go look on the door to see when they're going to open. Only 3 blocks from the house so really convenient.

Crab Fries! Wings! Decadent and delicious food. It is a bit of a hole in the wall, always busy and takes a while to get your food. Call in ahead of time if you don't want to wait as long. The artwork is pretty entertaining. Also the people watching is pretty fun. See if you can spot the tourists from the locals. :)

I think they closed during Covid but I'm hoping they'll come back so I haven't deleted this one. Best soul food breakfast you ever had. Closed on Sundays and seasonal. Plan to wait a bit on Saturday morning but well worth it. The Google listing doesn't get updated very often, so you have to just go check.

We love to go for a late breakfast on the weekend. Best grits I've ever had. (Don't tell my step-mom please.) Plus Thunderbolt is really cute.

Good diner food, reasonably priced, cute decor. Their iced tea is wonderful and refreshing. We like to walk over here, get a bite to eat, goof around in Forsyth Park and pick up a few groceries at the Krogers.

Go to the Hitch at 300 Drayton St Savannah Ga. Owned by the same people, but can't list it on here because it doesn't come up on the location list and the system won't let me put in. Their nachos are really unusual but totally amazing! The long booth against the wall is too far off the floor so if you're short your legs will dangle like a child's.

Best burgers and fries in town! They make home made ketchup and don't have the bottled kind. I confess I surreptitiously put some packets of regular ketchup in my pocket when we come here. Sorry to be that person, but thought I'd let you know because the burgers are phenomenal.

My favorite coffee shop, anywhere, ever. You definitely want to bring a bag of coffee beans home with you if you're a coffee drinker. All the food is delicious too. I'm an early riser, so I often come here first thing in the morning and bring back coffee and breakfast in bed for my sweetheart.

Very romantic with Old Savannah charm and the food is wonderful. You can wander through the house to see all of it. Fantastic ballroom!

Delicious food! Their hours vary a lot, so if you see smoke coming from the barbecue pit stop on by! Lunch is your best bet because they stay open until they sell out of everything and I've rarely seen them open at supper time. The neighborhood looks really sketchy but everyone I've talked to is nice and friendly.

Really good cafe food for breakfast or lunch. Plan to wait a while on the weekend but the service is pretty fast once you get a table.

Pretzels with beer cheese dip, deviled egg of the day, and pulled pork nachos! It's down on River Street and perfect for taking a break from shopping and watching the ships and boats go by.

Really cool convenience store. Great deli with yummy food. Super cold drinks in the cooler and frozen soda at the soda fountain. They start serving breakfast after midnight. It's great if you get to town late and you're starving or if you need to get ahead of the coming hangover after enjoying the bar scene a little too much.

The breakfast is incredible! The wait is super long though, so not the place you're going to go if you have a flight to catch and thought you'd have time to eat before heading to the airport. Friendly staff, quirky decor and atmosphere. Fresh squeezed orange juice and you can watch the machine squish the oranges.

It's quick and good, and not too expensive. They have tables out front on the sidewalk so you can people watch while you're eating. So far no seating inside yet.

Favorite Places to go and see

Mostly historic and touristy things to see and do.
This is the house in the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The tour is interesting and reasonably priced and the gift shop has some of the best Savannah souvenirs I've seen.

Go see the Candler Oak by Ruskin Hall across from Forsyth Park. It is an oak tree that is over 300 years old. There is a big plaque to read and it is really interesting.

Alligators! There's a pretty long driving tour with plenty of places to pull over if you spot one and want to take some pictures. The drive is free but last I knew it was only open on the weekends so definitely check before you go. There is a nature center and I think you have to pay to get in but it was closed for covid before we ever found it so not sure what they have in there. When you get across the bridge into South Carolina there's a strip club on the left. There is oftentimes a produce stand there and everything I've bought there has been outstanding. One of the guys who tends the stand makes boiled peanuts and they're some of the best I've ever had.

Neighborhoods

You can't go to Savanah without going down to River Street. Lots of pubs, restaurants and cute little shops. Plus a long, brick paved walk along the river with lots of places to sit and watch the river traffic and people going by. Make sure to see a container ship go by. You just won't believe it if you've never seen one before. There's a guy who plays the trumpet by the big paddle boat and he's pretty entertaining. Sometimes he teases people with his songs. He takes requests and I think Covid was pretty hard on him, so make sure to put a few bucks in his bucket if you listen to his playing. The paddle boat is the one in Ozark if you've seen that show.

This one you have to drive, unless you really like walking long distances. Go South on Montgomery St and take a left onto Victory Drive. The live oak trees make a canopy over the street and there are palm trees down the boulevard in the middle. Lots of pretty old houses to see. Go right on Abercorn for more of the same. Not really any destination other than a pretty drive, but if you keep going the mall is out this way.

Bad Places. No Likey!

No good. Rude staff, disgusting food. We ate here one time and the food was both burned and cold. Also got crawfish and they had gone off. Another time I was walking by the river with my granddaughter and she needed the bathroom so we asked if she could go. One of the staff members said they were closing but sure and as she was walking back there a guy came from behind the bar and very gruffly told her they were closed and she'd have to leave. Really, this is how to treat a 9-year-old girl? Shame. They only stay in business because there's a steady stream of people they only have to fool once.

If you think my neighborhood is the 'hood, go over on the west side of MLK and I think you'll change your mind. No, don't really go over there. Don't. This is the real hood in Savannah.
