Serves the best Tartiflette in the area!! It's where we go for tartiflette when we feel like indulging! Tariflette is an alpine dish of potatoes, ham and local cheese and in this restaurant is served in a cast iron skillet for added charm! The Auberge also serves other traditional local dishes and has a varied menu which is updated regularly. Specials board available. Is the only restaurant we know of that serves the famous Matafan - a speciality of the Savoie and Provence. It is a thick crepe of potato, flour, egg and cheese. It is also available to take away. English spoken. Reservations: 0450022366

A very cosy restaurant with excellent staff, English spoken. A wide variety of crispy French-style pizzas plus all the local specialities. They do a mean goat's cheese tartiflette! Salads are good value and large enough to leave you satisfied. Their Nordique salad for example comes with plenty of smoked salmon and prawns. Live music is sometimes played in the village square opposite the restaurant at the weekends, especially around the Tour de France. Takeaway available if you'd rather eat your food by the river (which is highly recommended!) after a beer in the local bar! Reservations: 0450022793 Open lunch and evening

AKA Chez Suzanne - Good quality food. Order burgers in advance to avoid disappointment - yes, they are that good apparently! I don't know from personal experience as I didn't order in advance and they were sold out! In our local village so only 5 minutes away. President Sarkozy came here during his presidency every year for fondue and has been back since too. All the security sent the internet fuzzy and slow. Snipers were in the mountains and security screened the area for days in advance. Yes, in sleepy Le Petit Bornand. It was quite the occasion.

Our local bakery serves a great selection of bread including organic. Sandwiches are usually available and you can also have a coffee whilst you wait for.... well, just because you can! Check out the nut bread and other specialities if you're feeling like trying something new. Please don't follow google maps! Just drive down the main road towards Le Petit Bornand and it's on the left after the petrol station. Open every day except Wednesday. 06h00 - 13h00 15h30 - 19h30

Le Chalet du Port restaurant is a delightful restaurant with the ambiance coming directly from the shore of Lac Annecy. The restaurant itself is modern and functional but sitting outside brings together the gentle jangling of the boat rigs and the spectacular mountain views around the lake. It is an ideal retreat after a busy day in Annecy to cool off and unwind. http://www.lac-annecy.com/restauration/1/93622-le-chalet-du-port.html

Sightseeing

Yvoire is a medieval village on the bank of Lac Leman (lake Geneva). It is simply a stunning village, quaint and historic, with some rather lovely restaurants too. If it's a lovely day be prepared for the restaurants to be busy and either reserve if you see a nice restaurant but it's too early to eat, or plan on an early lunch to bagsie the best tables. There is a beautiful if small garden to walk around (pay on entry) called the Garden of the Five Senses. It's an incredibly calm place to visit, in an already very calming village http://www.jardin5sens.net/en/. What you probably won't expect to see in a medieval village are the cool furniture shops with serious style. There's also a lovely pottery shop and other craftsy type places.

Le Grand Bornand was an established village before the introduction of skiing to the area. It was historically the place where the farmers came to meet every Wednesday to set the price for the local cheese, Reblochon. This is one of the most highly regarded cheeses in France, and along with Tomme de Savoie really are the 'taste' of the alps. The village has a well organised tourist information in the main square of the village opp. the church, with it's characteristic metallic steeple. Market day is Wednesday and is well worth a visit although the prices do reflect the scenery! You will find everything there - a selection of saucissons in a range of flavours and combinations, including wild boar, olives, spices and much, much more. There's too much to do in Le Grand Bornand to write about here. In summer there is a wonderful selection of activities for children and a swimming pool (open June to end of August). I've tried to put a few of the more special activities in this guide separately.

La Clusaz was developed really after the introduction of skiing to the area. Before this the village wasn't, well... a village! It was a collection of summer alpine farms that the women and children would bring the cows to during the warmer months. As such it still packs a lot of character into a small space. It is more 'happening' than Le Grand Bo' in the evenings, with a selection of restaurants, some with music and late night bars. Food is excellent in a lot of the restaurants. Market day in Monday - which can be a bit disappointing out of season, although there are the regulars including some amazing cheese stalls. In season the market is fantastic - lots of food, clothes and regional products. It's not unknown to find a local there with especially delicious apricots, peaches from their garden or mushrooms they've gathered from the local area. Prices again tend to reflect the stunning views but a lot of the cheeses you won't find in the supermarkets and are regional specialities from other areas of France plus Reblochon and Tomme de Savoie.

Annecy is a wonderful must-see during a trip to the area. Annecy is a medieval city known as the 'Venice of the Alps' because of the crystal clear and blue canals which give the city its unique character. There are fantastic restaurants to eat at and an amazing choice of shops, selling everything from clothing to artisan products to local produce. And all this is presented in a series of covered, arched walkways. The most picturesque way to get to Annecy is to follow the D909 from St Jean de Sixt towards Thones and then turn left at the roundabout towards Alex. This route will take you the chateau de Menthon-Saint-Bernard towards Veyrier-du-Lac, one of the most expensive and beautiful cote-du-lac in the area. The best place to park is the Parking Bonlieu which is next to the Théatre Bonlieu on Rue Louis Revon (turn right off the D909 - Avenue d'Albigny). There is a lot to do in Annecy in addition to shopping and eating! The parking at Banlieu is perfect for accessing the park at the side of the lake. There are tricycles for hire in the shape of horses for little people. The park is romantic and the Pont des Amours gives a really pleasant view of both the lake and the start of the canals. The tourist information centre is immediately accessible in the building housing the théatre.

One of the best ways to see Mont Blanc is on the drive to Chamonix. The view on the A40 is amazing. You'll pass waterfalls and see the enigmatic ski resorts of St Gervais and Megeve on the way. Once in Chamonix, the capital of mountaineering and extreme skiing in France, there are streets to explore, restaurants to eat at and views to behold. good on rainy days for shopping for that extra fleece!

A trip to Lac d'Annecy is almost obligatory! The views are stunning and you can swim in the crystal clear lake. Other activities include hiring bikes and cycling round the purpose made cycling track. Do not expect peace and quiet during July and August!

If you've ever fancied seeing what the mountaineers of Chamonix see from the top of the mountains a trip on the telecabine is the right way to go about it. In winter you'll need to book ahead and be prepared to be there early. In winter you can ski down the Vallée Blanche |(mountain guide recommended unless you are seriously experienced). Equally beautiful in summer, the queues are quieter and the experience is more leisurely. Costs around 57€ per person.
