Sightseeing

Five minutes from your apartment are the entrance gates of one of the best kept secrets in Egypt. El Gouna named from the word Lagoon is know as the French Riviera of the Red Sea. It is a self contained town on the coast that is made up of islands. El Gouna is the home to wealthy Europeans and Egyptians. All of El Gouna is artificial but it has been done well and has won the Global Green Award in August 2014 for its progress in environmental sustainability. El Gouna specialises in water sports including Diving to Kite surfing to wake boarding. There are several beaches such as Zeytuna and Mangroovy beach. There is also an 18 hole golf course, cinemas and even an Opera house. One of the many things that make El Gouna so special is the amazing variety and excellent quality of cuisine it has to offer. There are over 100 different dining outlets to choose from, ranging from fine cuisine to casual dining as well as a variety of cafes and coffee shops. From international to local, there is something to suit all pockets and pallets. El Gouna during the week and especially out of season seems quite quiet in the evenings but from Thursday you will see it start to fill up as many people have holiday homes here and come from Cairo. There are two main areas. Abu Tig Marina or Downtown. If it is a hot night and in summer period, then I definitely recommend you go to the Marina. There are plenty of lovely places to choose from that have stunning views over the marina and at the same time will keep you feeling cool from the sea breeze. Some establishments have the mushroom heaters too and they will use them if it is a little cool. In winter months however I recommend you choose a restaurant that also has indoor dinning and there are several on the Marina, otherwise Downtown is a better option as its more protected from the thermic temperature drop that you find in the desert. If you are looking for some great nightlife, then Abu Tig marina and Downtown El Gouna have a lot to choose from, from open air nightclub to lounge bars to live bands. El Gouna has it all!

If you have time, then I definitely recommend a trip to the city of Luxor. Discover the wonders of ancient Egypt on this amazing full days tour. It has the famous temples of Karnak, Luxor and Queen Hatshepsut, plus the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens. Time permitting a trip on a felucca on the Nile is worthwhile. A full day cruising on the Red Sea. It takes about 1 hour by boat to reach the area that is so famous for wild dolphins. Watch or swim with these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat. Lunch is served on board and after the boat takes you to a reef perfect for snorkelling. Finish the day with a thrilling banana boat or donut ride. Departs very early from Hurghada town. Recommend you take 2 cool bag and pack it with breakfast items as it is a long wait till lunch and swimming with dolphins is hungry work. Don't forget to take some money to tip the guys on the boat. Giftun island is a full day and to get there you pass through the bluest of seas. This island has the clearest waters full of marine life and a boat trip with plenty of reef stops to snorkel. Giftun island is just one of the stops as it is a desert island with little shade. Don't forget to take lots of sunscreen lotion. Neighborhoods

Hurghada stretches for about 45 kilometres along the seashore and includes resorts such as El Qoseir, Makadi Bay, Soma Bay and El Gouna. The city of Hurghada is divided into three areas:- Sheraton Road/El Dahar and the Promenade. Sheraton Road is packed with life and is where you will find the real local culture. Hectic, noisy and beware of being hassled non stop. It is not a relaxing experience but all the same one that you shouldn't miss. Here you will find endless bazaars, stalls and coffee houses. The Promenade is around 5 km long boasting many 4 star hotels, nightclubs and international cuisine. There are two malls too with uncountable number of shops. El Dahar is mainly home to the locals. It is chaos and seems dirty. You will not find many foreigners here, only the ones that live here. There is a daily market which is quite interesting. Ladies do ensure you dress appropriately.

Food scene

A must! Delicious Middle Eastern, Lebanese, Egyptian cusine. Great in winter as it has an inside too and has beautifully hand carved ceilings. In the summer you can sit outside overlooking the marina . I recommend the marinated chicken. But all the food here is just divine. Located in Abu Tig Marina El Gouna. £

If it is a romantic evening you are planning then I would definitely recommend Pier 88. It offers International and Italian cuisine. Recommend you book ahead as it is often busy with an 'In' crowd on the weekends (Friday/Saturday). Do take your phone to use as a torch as it is quite dark and it helps to read the menu. We take so much for granted in the West on how easy it is to pop out to the store. In Egypt it is more difficult and you will find that your usual favourites you will not be able to get. Egypt is however slowly changing and chain stores are starting to pop up everywhere. Opening hours are normally 8am till midnight. Aqua Palms Supermarket - The best place for a small shop. Sherif goes daily to the market and his choice of fresh fruit and veg is great and cheap. I like to support him if possible. Bestways Alaa Hyaa - Brand new offering more than just food. Spinney's Dahar (7km) - Perfect for a big shop. Has meat and a delicatessen. Best ways Down town Elgouna - A great choice of International brands. You can find anything in this small supermarket. They do take away food too such as salads/Hummus/Tahini. Senzo Mall (25km) for a big shop and for fresh meat. Also sells electrical products and household items.

From Mini Buses to Tuk Tuks

The 'Go' yellow minibus has an excellent service to El Gouna. Cost is 6 le and they run from 6am till midnight. It is very frequent and runs every 12 minutes. Recommended that you have the correct change and that ladies please dress accordingly. The Bus Stop is on the main road, just put your hand out when you see the bus coming! The bus will take you to down town El Gouna and from here you can take a tuk tuk . The tuk tuk are great fun and will take you anywhere in El Gouna for 20l.e for 1 person or 30l.e for 2/3 persons. There are several tuk tuk staions dotted around the town and Marina.

Taxi drivers. The Good, Bad and Ugly!

There is a choice of taxi's available. ABC taxis (+20 100 222 8294) are brilliant and priced honestly and are reliable. Just send them a whats ap . Otherwise if you have the app then Uber is cheap and a good service. (Do remember that they are not allowed pick ups in El Gouna.)I would not recommend the black and orange taxi as I guarantee they will rip you off and you will get into an argument!

Dahar/Hurghada

The 'Go' Bus goes to Dahar and costs 10 l.e. From Dahar you can take a white minibus to Hurghada town centre and Sheraton street. The Minibus station in Dahar is the same as the Go bus stop. Dahar can seem pretty intimidating. It's dirty, chaotic and you will not find many tourists wandering around but it is safe and lets not forget, it is the real Egypt!

Ramadan 2023

Ramadan for 2023 will start Wednesday March 22 and will finish Friday April 21st. Unlike most countries in the Gulf States, Egypt is fairly easy going with regards tourists eating during the day in Ramadan. Some restaurants in El Gouna will be open during the day but no alcohol will be served. Remember not to eat around sunset as this will be breakfast time for many devote Muslims

Talk like an Egyptian

Egyptian Arabic is not an easy language to learn but I recommend at least 10 words or so are a must for the savy holiday maker! Let's get started. How much - Bekham da? Near - Orybb Far - Baeed Here - Hena

El Gouna Film festival

The El Gouna Film Festival is an annual film festival and was established in 2017. Many actors, producers and directors get together from all over the world to celebrate and win awards. This year the El Gouna Film Festival 5th edition has unfortunately been cancelled so we will have to wait until 2023 until the city comes alive with movie stars and glitter.

Dress code for women

Egypt being a predominantly Muslim country, is conservative but not as severe as the Gulf States or Saudi Arabia.) That said it is recommended that you dress accordingly. If you are taking local transport and walking around the streets of Hurghada, then I would recommend you avoid wearing short skirts, tank tops, see through blouses and low neck tops. Always carry a scarf in your bag and you can always pop it around your shoulders. It helps those uncomfortable stares and any unnecessary hassle. If you are on the beach then a bathing costume or bikini are allowed but no topless bathing.

Survival and the art of bartering!

Be wary when an innocent looking man attempts to entice you into his shop. Next they will kindly offer you a drink, something like tea or if they feel you are rich, they will offer you a Cola. As you drink and let your guard slowly disappear they then put on a star performance and demonstrate their produce. One should politely refuse the refreshments because if you drink then you are obliged to buy from them. Often the clothes are counterfeit knockoffs. If you do buy something, then don't forget to haggle. You should at least be able to get 40% off from the seller depending of the product.
Co spakować

Ladies top tips.

Make sure you pack a couple of pashminas. These are idea for covering over your shoulders. Even though Egypt is quite liberal, in some areas it is respectful to cover up. On public transport or walking down town Hurghada or in local Dahr. Make sure you pack some comfortable shoes too and leave the heels at home. (Or if you must, just pack one pair!)
Co spakować

Plugs!!!

If you have a European plug (two pin) then bring your curling tongs. However there is a hairdryer and iron already in the apartments.

Top tip. Tiny flies.

Sometimes out of season you may find lots of tiny flies when you order your food. Ask the waiter if he can bring you a bowl/ashtray of coffee granules/grains. Once this is lit, it tens to smoulder and it works a treat as these little devils don't like coffee.
Jak zaoszczędzić

Backsheesh...

People in Egypt survive on tipping. General rule is that in restaurants you will find a 10% service charge already added to the bill but this goes to the restaurant and not the waiter. I would recommend a 10 to 20 l.e. tip if you have received great service. Taxi's you normally in Egypt don't tip.
