If you like walking you'll love Barnard Castle

With local walks on the doorstep and amazing local countryside it is hard not to fall in love with Teesdale!
A lovely 4 1/2 mile walk along the river taking in the ruins of Eggleston Abbey. Start you walk in town, no need for a car. Follow the river along until you get to the bridge and abbey and then walk back along the opposite side. Finish with a bite to eat at one of the lovely cafes in town.

A 35 minute drive from Barnard Castle. A favourite place of ours to walk on the Teesdale Moors, with anything from 2 -10 mile walks. See if you can spot the Waterfall! For the more adventurous of you park the car at the Cow Green Reservoir main carpark and walk back along the road to Whinny Bank Farm and follow the river back round to the reservoir and climb up the side of the Cauldron Snout Waterfall and back to the car park, this is an 8 1/2 mile walk and you will need to be reasonably fit and able to scramble up some exposed rock.

A must see for anyone visiting this area and just over 20 minutes away in the car. A stunning display of natures finest and several different walks can be done here. Taking the road towards Middleton in Teesdale it is very easy to find and has a large carpark opposite which is around £4 to park. You can do a short and easy walk to the bottom of the falls which is all on pathway and there are several other longer routes to take in more of the area around the falls. Suitable for all abilities and distances.

Things to do in Barnard Castle

There is lots to do in this delightful little town...
A must visit and within walking distance (about 20 minutes and a steep hill or two). Beautiful architecture that wouldn't look out of place in central London and absolutely breath taking. You are definitely missing out if you don't visit this marvel of an art museum. Regularly hosting exhibitions by all kinds of creatives such as Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood and Christian Dior.

The Majestic Castle ruins (which you can see from the main bedroom window) now run by English Heritage but free to walk through the grounds. Set on a high rock above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III. With fantastic views over the Tees Gorge this fortress sits on the fringe of an attractive working market town also known as ‘Barney’ so there is plenty to do for families on a day out. Try and spot Richard's boar emblem carved above a window in the inner ward or visit the 'sensory garden' of scented plants and tactile objects.

As mentioned on the Demenses walk this can also be reached by car. A 10 minute drive from town and a car park on site however the walk is much more rewarding on a nice day. The charming ruins of a small monastery of Premonstratensian 'white canons', picturesquely set above a bend in the River Tees near Barnard Castle. Remains include much of the 13th century church and a range of living quarters, with traces of their ingenious toilet drainage system.
