Eateries we like!!

We have tried quite a few of the cafes and restaurants in Tenby, and our guests have too!! Here are a few recommendations for you :)
Fabulous Balcony views!! This little cafe has a balcony out at the back which is suspended above the Tenby harbour and North Beach with amazing views of the harbour and beach scene. They do some lovely greek style food and the garlic mushrooms are to die for!!! It is a coffee and cake house too and their coffee is really good! Its a popular spot but worth waiting for a seat - and if you can get out on the small balcony even better!!

A fabulous Italian restaurant with a great menu which is beautifully cooked and presented!! The views over Tenby harbour are stunning and if you can get a window seat overlooking the harbour then all the better. Book early as it is very popular!! :)

We've had a fantastic lunch here on more than one occasion!! It is a lovely drive too as you can take in Solva and Newgale on the way and then onto the amzing Porthgain Harbour where the restaurant is situated. They do lunch and evening food and their website is well worth a look. It's about a 40 minute drive so could be incorporated into a day out but weel worth the trip!!

This is in the village of Pentlepoir and will deliver Chinese food or they have a sit down restaurant. Absolutely lovely takeaways that we have thoroughly enjoyed. We haven't visited for a sit down meal but I suspect the food is as good or better. Really yummy if you're into Chinese food :))

This is a lunch time stop at the lovely Narberth which is not far from Tenby at all - it is a lovely deli with an emphasis on Spanish foods, lots of samples to try and the cafe at the back of the deli does some fantastic lunchtime snacks. Very nice lunch stop :)) Narberth High Street, where Ultracomida is sited, has some lovely independent shops too and some great antique emporiums for a browse around :))

Always had a good Indian meal here and we've been several times. They do takeaways too. The views over Tenby and North Beach are fantastic. Last time we went it was a bring your own alcohol so check with them for current policy. Tesco's Express is only about 2 minutes away walking so easy to grab a bottle nearby :))

A fabulous spot 10 minutes drive from Tenby along the coast. If you drive through Saundersfoot centre and follow signs to Wisemans Bridge its a nice drive too. If the sun is out sit outside for lunch, or even evening meal, and you are literally sitting on the beach. Good beer, good pub and great location :))

Fantastic restaurant, which is open to non members, with a great menu and beautiful views out across the countryside surrounding Tenby. If the weather is good ask for a table on the terrace or the deck. Check their website (Trefloyne Manor) for the latest menu choices and always worth ringing to book just in case they are running any functions!! (The golf course is excellent too!!)

Our favourite beaches

We love the beaches but there are some gems amongst them that are well worth a visit .... :)
Check out the tide times and go and see this beach at low tide. A huge expanse of sand when the tide is out, always quiet, even at the height of Summer, and great for a dip in the sea. The closest you can get by car is to drive down to Trevayne Farm, New Hedges and park at the end of the lane on a gravel area next to the road. Then walk through the farm (it's a camping site too) which is a public path and pick up the path that goes from the rear of the farm down to the Coast Path across a field. Beautiful views here! Cross over the coast path following the wooden signs to the beach which is down a zig zag path. The walk back up will get you puffing! At high tide it is a rocky beach so worth waiting for the sand!! We love to walk to Monkstone from Castaway which is about two miles. Go back up to the main road from here, straight across and down towards Waterwynch Bay. As you get to the bottom of the hill look out for the Coastal Path crossing you from left to right (The acorn symbol denotes the Coastal Path). Turn left on the Coastal Path itself and enjoy a fabulous walk along to Trevayn Farm where you drop down onto the beach as described above. Look out for the 4 way path junction with the beach signs to guide you. If you time your arrival at Monkstone for low tide you can then walk around Monkstone Point rocks and all the way along the sand into Saundersfoot - ONLY at low tide.

Best at low tide as you can get a lot further!! Waterwynch is our closest beach and about 0.6 of a mile away from here. On foot go back up to the main road and straight across, walking down the tarmac road. As you get to the bottom of the hill turn RIGHT along the Coastal Path (Acorn Symbol on the wooden signs) and after 50 metres take a left towards the beach. This takes you along the side of the guest houses at Waterwynch and eventually down some steps to the beach itself. At high tide it is a small pebbly beach but at low tide it opens out to plenty of sand, rock pools and some fantastic caves to explore. You can walk in both directions at low tide and explore. Keep an eye on the tide !!

Voted into the Top 20 Beaches in the world, Barafundle is well worth a visit. Take a picnic and go and enjoy a beautiful sandy beach that's a great place to get in the sea when the water is warm in Summer. It is on National Trust land and the closest place you can park a car is at Stackpole Quay which charges a fee for NON National Trust members. There is a National Trust cafe at Stackpole Quay as well which does some great snacks. Down at Stackpole Quay itself there is a tiny harbour, where a single fishing boat works from, that comes in to moor at high tide and off load the catch. From Stackpole Quay simply follow the wooden signs for Barafundle up along the Coast Path for about half a mile and you get to the amazing Barafundle beach. Either stay on the beach or there is a path that goes back over the large sand dunes and up into some ancient woodland which is a great contrast to the beach itself. More about this on our 'Walks' section of the 'Castaway Guidebook' :) Quite a few steps up and down but sooo worth it!!

Two ways to get to the beach ..... 1. Drive to Bosherston village and park in the National Trust car park on the sharp bend next to the church. Then walk through 'The Lily Ponds' and out onto Broadhaven Beach. Beautiful walk and even better if its lily time of the year!! 2. Drive through Bosherston and look out for the brown sign pointing you left to Broad Haven. Follow the narrow lane for about a mile and it takes you into another National Trust car park (free for members) which is just above the beach itself and therefore much less walking!! Take your picnic or BBQ down onto the sand and enjoy this stunning beach. In Summer there is often a food van parked in the car park too which does locally farmed pork yummies (and other snacks) and drinks (hot and cold). Always plenty of space on this beach even at the height of Summer :)

This is just beautiful!! A national trust area and a national trust car park plus one of their great cafes. A quaint little quay with a resident small trawler that is still working. More especially you can park here and walk the loop that takes you from Stackpole Quay along to Barafundle Beach, on to Broadhaven beach, then the lilly ponds at Bosherston and follow the lilly ponds paths to Eight Arch Bridge and back along to Stackpole Quay - a circuit of 4 to 5 miles i guess but a lovely walk :))

Castle Beach is one of 4 Tenby beaches that all face in different directions so you can always find shelter and sun!! Castle beach has lovely sand for building!! It has great views of St Catherines Island and when the tide is out theres good caves to explore and you can walk along to South Beach, Tenby on the sand - again with lots of caves to explore and houses perched on the cliffs above to dream about owning :)) Keep an eye on the tide if you stop inbetween the two beaches :))

Tenby's South Beach is another gem!! You can walk down from the town and straight onto South Beach but it is over a mile of sand/pebbles so if you wanted a quieter bit on a busy Summers day then either drive to Penally station and park then walk across the railway along the path which takes you onto the furthest end of South Beach away from Tenby or of course take the mile walk from Tenby along the beach itself to the quieter end. From this far end you can take the short climb up onto Giltar point which has wonderful views back to Tenby and across to Caldey Island and some sand dunes for the kids to play in at the top!!

Walking from Castaway (and beyond!)

There are some fabulous walks both from Castaway and by driving/parking then walking. These are some of our favourites so far although we discover more on a regular basis
Best at low tide as you can explore a lot more!! A phone app called 'My Tide Times' is excellent for keeping track of the tides and timing your exploration :) A short walk of less than a mile and our closest beach. Walk from Castaway back up to the main road, straight across and down the tarmac road towards the Waterwynch Estate. When you meet the Coastal Path going across you (look out for the acorn symbol on the footpath signs) turn right and after about 50 metres take the left signed for the beach. Follow this path as it eventually drops down some steps onto Waterwynch Beach. If its high tide the beach is small and pebbly but at low tide there is sand and great caves and rock pools in both directions. Keep an eye on the tide though and don't get caught out!!

A walk from Castaway - about 4 miles. Walk back up to the main road and go straight across and down the hill. When you meet the Coastal Path turn left and follow this path all the way to an intersection of about 4 different path routes with wooden finger posts. Its a great walk offering some amazing views of Tenby, as you look back, so be sure to keep checking over your shoulder as you climb a grassy field to one of the higher points of the walk. Its about two miles in all to the 4 way intersection with some great ups and downs that will get the heart rate up a bit!! Once at the intersection you can go down the zig zag path to the beach itself or take a left to Trevayne Farm (look for the camper vans to your left and aim for them). Walk through Trevayne Farm yard, which is a lovely scenic camp site as well as a working farm, and then along the tarmac road that takes you back to New Hedges village. As you get to the village turn left, walk through the village and back to the main road and Garden Meadows Park. Around 4 miles and the ups and downs of the coast path are a good challenge.

A fabulous walk of around 5 miles for the complete circuit. From Castaway go back to the main road and straight across, continuing down towards Waterwynch Bay. Under the trees at the bottom look out for the coastal footpath signs and turn LEFT onto the coastal path. Just stay on this path (they use an 'acorn' symbol to indicate the coast path) and it will take you on a wonderful walk all the way to Saundersfoot. As you meet your first road and houses in Saundersfoot there are some steps that take you down onto the beach. If the tide is OUT you can walk along the beach to the harbour and beyond. If the tide is IN, you'll have to continue up the tarmac hill and then turn right at the T junction towards the harbour. As you descend there are wonderful views of the harbour and plenty of cafes and pubs to refuel before EITHER retracing your steps OR following the road out of Saundersfoot to New Hedges village and on to Garden Meadows Park the other side of New Hedges.

This is at the rear of our estate and a lovely ancient woodland walk. Go back up to the main road and turn left, walk along to The Priory Farm shop and turn left taking the road, and then the track, that goes past the farm shop on your left. Stay on that track for about half a mile and just before the farmyard in front of you turn left following the footpath signs. That gets you into the woods. You can take several different routes through the woods. If you want more detail ask Bob :) Local OS map will also show all the alternatives - Bob has one of them too :))

Giltar point is the far end of South Beach, Tenby and is a lovely viewpoint back to Tenby and across to the Gower and of course to Caldey Island. If you're feeling energetic it's about a 7-8 mile round walk from Castaway or you can drive to Penally Railway station and park there and walk up to Giltar. If you follow the coast path away from Tenby (so West) after another mile or so you come across the remains of the trenches they used to train soldiers in First World War trench warfare before they went to the front line - dark days :(

A lovely spot to go and watch the dare devils who jump into the lagoon from the old building ruins. They did the Red Bull cliff diving here too - check it out on You Tube! There is a beach car park nearby which cost us about 3 quid when we last went in April 2021. If you ARE a dare devil then go and take the plunge!!!! It 's the site of lots of old mining areas so theres some history boards around the area and it has strong mining links to Porthgain just along the coast(where The Shed Bistro is - yummmm)

Our nearest farm shop selling local produce is within walking distance of Castaway. Go back up to the main road and turn left. Keep to the left side of the A478 and after about 500m you'll see the farm shop tucked in to the left next to the entrance to Rumbleways Caravan Park. (If you need more choice then Four Seasons Farm shop is a short drive further along the A478 - see other entries)

Fabulous Farm Shop!! You have to go there for the cheese counter alone - often with lots of samples!! A short drive from Castaway with loads of off road parking which can be harder in a busy Summer Tenby town!! Travel back up to the main road and turn left. Stay on the A478 going straight on at the large Saundersfoot roundabout and about half a mile past that roundabout you'll see Four Seasons Farm shop on your left. They have wonderful bread, fresh salads, cheese counter, deli fridges, local beers, ciders and wines, milk, fruit and veg of which a lot is local to Pembrokeshire, and other yummys. Worth a visit if you like local fresh produce :))

An alternative to Mc Coll's at New Hedges, needing a short car journey, is the Co-Op down the hill in Tenby. Its open 0700 to 2200 most days and has fresh bread, an off licence and is a small supermarket style shop. From Castaway go back to the main road and turn right following the A478 down to the mini roundabout in Tenby. Turn right here and stay on this road as it takes you down a hill into Tenby. As you get to the bottom of the hill look out for the Co-Op on your right. It has a small walled car park where you can usually get a space.

This is our largest supermarket style shop in Tenby albeit not a full sized supermarket by any means!!! You'll get all your essentials, and more, and its open long hours on most days of the week - generally around 0800 to 2100 but check their website for seasonal variation on that!!

What's not to like about fudge and this place is awesome. Right in the middle of Tenby town and does fudge to die for in all flavours with seasonal specials and limited edition flavours. Sam runs the place - if he's there tell him Bob sent you from your Airbnb :))

Well this is a fabulous little local brewery who make great beers of all kinds. They are at the Salterns industrial estate SA70 7NJ. They have a shop at the brewery which sells other merchandise like T shirts and hoodies etc but the beer is best!! In June 2021 they are opening an outdoor bar at the brewery - perfect. There is also another brewery called The Harbwr Brewery which is based in town but we love Tenby Brewing Company the best !!! :)

Used to be McColls now a Morrisons Daily - within easy walking distance of Castaway - about 500m away. Back up to the main road, turn left for 400m then fork right into New Hedges village and it is on the left after a short distance :)

Sightseeing

A beautiful National Trust garden, spectacular tree lined walks, lovely cafe and sits just above Amroth village. You can park at Amroth car park in the village and walk up to Colby through the village and then woodland walk, or Colby has it's own car park too.

You can take a boat trip of about 20 minutes across to Caldey Island where there is an active monastery. There are a handful of monks that live there and the only other residents are staff that help out with the monastery and the sassociated shops and cafe in the grounds. There is a 3 or 4 mile walking options around the island, some lovely gift shops and a cafe. They make their own chocolate on the island and you can visit the small choclate shop and of course buy some!! :) Such a beautiful building and a lovely way to see Tenby from the water. Boats go every 20 or 30 minutes and they drop you off at the island and the last boat back is about 5pm - check the boards for last boat times!! You pay for your trip at the harbourside wooden shed like kiosks. Costs in Summer 2022 are around £15 for adults, £13 seniors and £9 children albeit there are family ticket options too - check out their social media sites.

The animals have plenty of room, there are opportunities to get very close to the animals and its a lovely walk round the zoo. It has it's own cafes and eating places, a shop for souvenirs but plenty of space too if you want to take a picnic. Lots of free parking :)
