Food Scene

This is a local pub that serves whiskey flights but also very good food.. The happy hour sliders and nachos are a full meal. It can be a little loud but the service is good.

For some reason Brew Pubs usually have great food and this is no exception. Seafood and gourmet individual pizzas are very good.

OK, it is Cannery Row and most of the diners are going to be tourists but their seafood and pasta in particular are great. One of the Shake Family Restaurants (Monterey's version of the Brennans in New Orleans)

Less of a secret since one of those TV chef's discovered it...I love it for breakfast and with the size of the servings you won't want lunch that day.Fish right from the wharf, great omelets and pancakes the size of manhole covers. Kitschy decor. Weekend mornings are very crowded...I'd go mid week.

In the lobby of the Osio Theater (and you can take your goodies into the movie). The best sandwiches (try the hot blondie) on bread they bake themselves. The salads, sides and desserts are made by them as well and are great.

If you want a special place with the best of local sustaiable seafood and a good wine list this is for you. Reservations are needed but not hard to get except when the ATT OPen or Car Week are underway. You do not have to dress up because this is Monterey, but this is a very nice restaurant and you can if you like. Featured in Bon Appetit a couple years ago but they maintained their quality along with the fame.

Only the best french pastry and cakes outside of Paris. Good coffee as well,Orange Brioche, croissants of all kinds and danish are best breakfast bets but they make a very good quiche as well. Grab a packet of cookies on your way out.

Drinks & Nightlife

also a restaurant. The last chef was amazing but I haven't tried the new one. The ambience is charming and cozy and there is even a rumor of a ghost in this old adobe. Artisanal drinks and tons of charm. The old owner was all about absinthe but that may have changed as well. Worth a visit.

Victorian filled Pacific Grove is worth exploring and Lover's Point is the jewel in the crown. a beautiful spot but believe them when they say not to climb of the rocks for the perfect selfie.People have been swept out to sea and drowned. PG history is reflected in the name...It was Lovers of Jesus Point as this was founded as a Methodist summer retreat. And a dry town. The green signs on the houses? The Methodist Widows who built them and turned it into a year round town. If you have kids take them to the (free) Natural History Museum and pose on the life sized whale in front.

This drive has everything and so much of it that by the end you might actually become blase about the beauty of the coastline. You'l also drive by some impressive estates (usually a few for sale...) golf links and the Inn at Spanish Bay and the Lodge at Pebble Beach. Both have fine bars and restaurants. They will also credit your gate fee if you eat there. Used to be they'd credit you for a drink, but the lodge requires a $30 (maybe 3 drinks) but Spanish Bay may be more flexible. On a rainy day (and we finally have had some) there is no better place to hang out than in front of one of the 2 huge fireplaces in the lounge at The Lodge. The drive certainly attracts tourists but it is all too

Sightseeing

Ok it is as touristy as you can get, but the food is better than SF's fishermans wharf and the rec trail entrance is right at the front of the Wharf. I like to come early in the am when noone is around except dog walkers and the whale watching guys. You can book your whale watch on the spot. Some restaurants do not allow strollers or provide highchairs so be sure to ask!

Arts & Culture

PIck up a map at the Ranger station for a self guided tour of the historic buildings of Old Monterey. Many are open daily, some only on scheduled tour days. California was born upstairs at Colton Hall on Friendly Plaza. At Christmas you can't miss Christmas in the Adobes, a tour plus music, traditional holiday decor and live music at every stop...I love the bagpipes in the garden at dusk at the Robert Louis Stevenson House.

A wonderful collection of early California Art and special exhibits. This is a 10 min walk, but there is a second location at La Mirada which you should also visit for the house and gardens.
