"We opened Fig in 2015 intent on creating a fun and unique cafe where people could lounge around, be inspired and have some great food and drinks. We felt Hvar needed something creative and different from the rest of the places we saw serving the same food so we opened a place where everyone feels welcome and relaxed as they get to try deliciously different food and drinks inspired by the world travels of the owners. Geoff has been a private chef on megayachts for nearly a decade and he brings that creative flair to our delicious food menu.. Rob has tended the best bars in Melbourne, a city known for its incredible food and drinks, and he puts together our drink list. Come in, relax and have some fun!" Fig team!

Sightseeing

An easy stroll from Hvar's square, along the sea and the waterfront soon brings you to the Franciscan monastery. Within the peace and quiet of the monastery walls, you can enjoy a rich display of museum exhibits (collections of Greek, Roman and Venetian coins, liturgical items, atlas of the ancient cartographer Ptolemaeus, rare exhibits of amphora, etc.), as well as paintings of Venetian artists like Francesco Santacroce and Palma Junior. The monastery is known for its magnificent painting of the Last Supper (2 x 8 m) which leaves everyone breathless. Some critics believe it is the work of a painter from Ravenna Matteo Ingoli, whilst others think that the painting belongs to the school of Palma Junior. One more rarity that makes the monastery famous is the 300-year old cypress that is located in the garden of the monastery.

Hvar theatre, the oldest public theatre in Europe, situated in the building called Arsenal is a highest level monument of national significance to the Republic of Croatia. The theatre was built in 1612 on the first floor of Arsenal during the reign of the industrious duke Petar Semitecolo. Monumental Arsenal in the center of the historical core of Hvar is one of the most significant military-maritime buildings of its kind on the Mediterranean. The transom of the gate to the theatre on Belveder – Fontik terrace along the northern facade of Arsenal reads: ANNO SECVNDO PACIS MDCLXII. The year 1612, as stated in the sign is the second year of social peace between the squabbling classes of the Hvar Commune.

The hill overlooking the town of Hvar is a magnificent viewpoint. From there, you can look down on the town itself, watch the comings and goings in the harbour, see the Pakleni islands and the sea beyond. On a clear day (which they mostly are), you can see right over to Vis. The benefits of such an ideal defensive position wasn’t missed by the early settlers of the island.

Square & Cathedral of St. Stephen, Episcopal Palace - Attractions in Hvar town If you visit Hvar, all the streets will lead you to Hvarska pjaca (Hvar's square), the centre of city's public and social life and the largest square in Dalmatia. The eastern side of the square is surrounded by the Cathedral of St. Stephen that was built on the foundations of an early-Christian church from the 6th century and that acquired its present appearance in the 16th and 17thcentury. The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Stephen, a pope and martyr, the protector of the Diocese and the city of Hvar. The renaissance bell-tower of the Cathedral and Hvar's other bell towers (St. Mark, Franciscan and the ruined one of St. Venerande) are considered to be the nicest ones in Dalmatia. Hvar's Cathedral preserves many valuable items and paintings of famous painters like Stefano Celesti, Palma Junior and the Spanish painter Juan Boschettus, but the most renowned painting is definitely Madonna, an example of the proto-Venetian art and one of the oldest in Dalmatia originating back in 1220. In the Episcopal Palace standing next to the Cathedral, a collection of objects of art, sacred vessels, archival documents, old books and liturgical vestments was founded in 1963.

Hanibal Lucić’s Summer Residence (around 1530) is a lovely example of the Renaissance architecture of country houses. It consists of two buildings and a large fenced garden in the Renaissance style, but with clearly visible Late Gothic features. The complex is located in the fields, outside the town walls.

Simply one of the most beautiful buildings in Dalmatia, the Arsenal in Hvar Town is an outstanding event location. Don't miss the chance to experience it if you can. The town Loza (Loggia) lies at the western end of the Pjaca, looking out on to the bay. Together with Leroj (Clock Tower), the Loggia is the only remains of the former Governor's Palace.[2] The Communal Loggia (loggia communis) was first mentioned as early as in the 13th century and referred to again in the Statute of Hvar in 1331.[2] The only remains of the Governor's Palace are two reliefs of the Venetian lion, a large well and a lintel from the Palace chapel dating from 1612. The new Loggia, one of the most beautiful Late Renaissance buildings in Dalmatia, was the work of the master Tripun Bokanić in the 16th century. Today, the interior of the loggia is decorated in a neo-Renaissance style and serves as a reception hall and exhibition room for the Hotel Palace, and also for the town of Hvar.

Monastery and the Church of St. Mark were first mentioned in 1312 and present remains date from the 16th and 17th century. Dominican Vinko Pribojević held his famous speech "On the Origin and Glory of the Slavs" in this church in 1525. In former triple-naved building there are graves of local families from the 15th to the 18th century, and the church was also used for the City Council meetings. Monastery was abolished in 1811 during the French administration. Apse of the church was turned into a chapel in the end of the 19th century.

The Benedictine Convent has been located here since 1664, originally in the residential complex of the poet Hanibal Lucić's family, which was left by his daughter-in law in her will to the Benedictines in 1591. Next to the convent is the Baroque church of St. Antony the Abbot and John the Baptist from the 17th century and the convent collection of arts and lace made of agave threads which nuns have been making from the 19th century and which is inscribed in the UNESCO's List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Beaches

Hvar is not just a gorgeous island and charming town, it's also the centre of the Hvar Riviera which comprises a cluster of offshore islets that are among the best the Adriatic has to offer. Taking its name from 'Paklina', a resin once used to coat ships, the Pakleni Islands offer small, secluded beaches, deserted coves and sun-drenched hills. The closest island is Galesnik, directly opposite Hvar town and now known for Eco-Ethno Island Hvar, a popular dining spot. Behind it is Jerolim, named after a now-disappeared church. Jerolim is a favourite among naturists who generally stroll away from the main jetty and stretch out on one of the shady coves. The islet is rocky but there are pine trees and maquis for shade. it's conveniently equipped with showers and a shop. Nearby is the other island of Marinkovac which contains Stipanska, now the site of the flashy Carpe Diem Beach Club. Another idyllic cove on Marinkovac is Zdrilca which has several pebble beaches. The largest Pakleni island is Sveti Klement (sometimes called Veliki Otok or Big Island) most famous for beautiful Palmizana hamlet. Here, azure waves lick a sandy cove surrounded by pine forests, heather fields and breezes scented by aromatic herbs. Palmizana has been a favourite getaway for Hvar islanders since the turn of the 20th century when a Professor Eugen Meneghello built a summer house and inn there, the Meneghello Place. This idyllic spot now hosts villas, an art gallery and Zori restaurant and lounge bar. Nearby Vlaka is a small fishing village reachable in an easy hour walk from Palmizana. Scuba divers love Palmizana for the vibrant underwater life.

Today it is deserted village of Malo Grablje that you can reach by walking from Velo Grablje, descending some 2 km along the dry brook line or by a new road from Hvar that leads towards Stari Grad. Malo Grablje is situated above the bay of Milna, resembling the nest as it has been located inside the stone rock. It is a fabulous site that captures one's attention, for you may find the stone houses and quiet stone lanes being incorporated within the genuine natural environment.
