A great place to bring the kids, but benefits for adults: the pizzas here are interesting and tasty with unusual ingredients, and there's beer and wine. Kind of a noisy atmosphere, but it's a nice spot for a family meal.

Another trendy place - this is where you go if you want sausage, French fries and beer. Besides soft drinks, that's about all there is but the food is good and reasonably priced.

This is probably THE most trendy restaurant in Venice at the moment, but don't let that scare you away. There is a coffee bar, bakery and restaurant in a charming atmosphere. Parking is by valet or you can take your chances with street parking. Warning: the restaurant is at the end of 3rd Street which is a homeless encampment - again, it is safe, but unsavory.

This is the parent restaurant of the newer Gjusta. It's not cheap but it is good and it is certainly trendy - it may be hard to get a reservation so call ahead.

You can walk here - it's on the corner of Lincoln and Venice Blvd. It is a shop where you can buy motorcycles, surfboards and other cool-guy products. But it's also a cafe - the coffee and pastries are good, the tables are family-style and it is certainly a local experience.

Louie's has a big bar and a limited menu but has a signature spicy/sweet chicken dish, lots of old fashioned cocktails, beer, wine. If you go with kids, go through the bar to the back room dining room - much nicer for just eating. Or you could just go for the drinking and the local crowd.

Grand View Market is part of the gentrification of this section of Venice Blvd. in Mar Vista. This is a grocery store but also has a restaurant part - you order at the cashier, take your number and they'll serve you at a table in the "restaurant" part. The food is simple - sandwiches, breakfast, Mexican food. In the evening there is often live music.

Tony P's is a restaurant right on the Marina. Sit on the outside patio and look at the boats as you eat breakfast/brunch or lunch. The food is plentiful, not gourmet, but it's a nice place to enjoy the Marina over morning coffee or a lunch salad.

If you want a Hawaiian breakfast, or just a simple ordinary breakfast, this is one possibility. Food is reasonably priced and portions are hearty. Hawaiian breakfasts include "royales" - a mix of eggs, vegetables and meats, served with rice, or French toast made with Hawaiian bread, among other choices.

If you go downtown (DTLA), don't miss the Grand Central Market - a 100+ year building that contains dozens of small vendors, breakfasts, bars, and restaurants. The food is uniformly great. It's a fabulous place to hang out and have a glass of wine, eat a meal or have a great dessert. It is also right across the street from the Bradbury Building, which was featured in Blade Runner and is an iconic building in Los Angeles - check it out!
