Food scene

Legend has it that the site was once used as a hideout for would be cattle rustlers.... since 1971 it has been home to a steakhouse, and one of the best views of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It's less than a 10 minute drive from our home, and your chance to try Rattlesnake, or my favorite the Vaquero. If dinner isn't on the menu, slide up to the bar, grab a drink, and head outside for the view. Planning your stop at sunset is a no brainer...... You won't be disappointed.

There is an abundant amount of dining in our neighborhood if your looking to go out, or take out and eat in the backyard. If your looking for recommendations just ask, we'll be glad to share our personal favorites. With deliveries of food being abundant now days, why not enjoy a beverage on the porch, watching birds, all the while knowing dinner is on the way.

Hiking

Hiking in South Mountain Park can be Dangerous. I want to make that perfectly clear from the beginning. Water, Water, Water.....I can't say it enough. If you don't have a water pack with you, Heidi and I do. Don't be afraid to ask... Now that, that is out of the way, lets talk about the Park. Did you know that South Mountain Park is the biggest city park in the U.S. So trails are in an abundance. No matter what your skill level, or time frame, there's a hike for you. We have a trail map, but I highly recommend a hiking app. We use AllTrails.... You came to see the desert, and the beauty that it beholds. Now get out there, get off the black top, and see what the desert has to offer.

Anchored east of Phoenix is the Superstition Mountains. Lost Dutchman's Mine ring a bell? Legend has it, that it's out there.  Some where,..... along with all the other ledgends. Weavers Needle, a prominent landmark set behind and to the east of Superstition Mountain, is a tall eroded volcanic remnant that plays a significant role in the legend of the Lost Dutchman's Gold Mine. But we're talking about hiking, and there's plenty of trails in the Supers for you. Whether a simple stroll to see wildflowers, or the challenging Flatiron trail. I've done both. The Flatiron by far is my favorite. It's a strenuous hike! Not for the cutesy clothes wearing hikers. Be prepared for a rugged adventure, and the mother of all scrambling walls. Take lots of water..... I repeat.... take lots of water.  Downloading the trail map from AllTrails is highly advisable. Now the view...... is simply amazing!

The epic "Battle at Picacho Peak" happened about an hour south of us. It's one of the furthest dust ups of the Civil War. Remote Picacho Peak was the back drop, which also happened to be a stage stop for the famed Butterfield Overland Mail. The summit tops out at 3374', and can be seen from downtown Tucson 45 miles away. But you'll have to work to get there. The climb will take you to a mesa, a table top, a top the spire. The 360° view from there is amazing. From the Santa Catalina's to the SE, Table Top Mtn near Casa Grande to the NW, and off in the distance to the north the mountain ranges surrounding the Phoenix area. The 2000' elevation gain hike will require gloves, as there are cables to use near the top. If cabling with gloves isn't your thing, the hike to the half way point is doable, and nearly as beautiful. February to March is a good time, and a great place to view wildflowers. As always, take more than enough water, I can't stress that enough. I typically have several pairs of gloves around if your up for the challenge, and need to borrow some.
