New Paltz is also home to the Mohonk Mountain House (not to be confused with the preserve) which is the perfect way to spend a day, whether that includes hiking, swimming, biking, rock scrambling, kayaking, getting spa treatments, or all of the above! With a lively music scene and plenty of bars to choose from, the town is no less fun once the sun goes down.

This 2 mile lollipop route offers close-up views of Ashokan High Point and to the mountains north and west including the Burroughs Range, North Dome and Tremper Mountain.  The trail passes by several artifacts from the reservoir’s construction phase including a rail car loading zone and the remnants of machinery used to load stone.  The trail passes through a thick stand of mountain laurel which is in bloom in June.  The AQT is an easy hike which is mostly flat except during the modest ascent to the top of the quarry.  The quarry wall is high and sheer, offering open views at its highest point.  There is a vernal pool at its base that is fed by water flowing down the face of the cliffs.
The Ashokan Rail Trail is open to the public from sunrise to sunset year-round. The 11.5-mile recreational trail runs along Ashokan Reservoir between West Hurley and Boiceville. The ART trail surface is 12 feet in width and surfaced with highly compacted fine crushed stone. Both the trail and trailhead parking areas (including the portable restrooms) are ADA compliant and accessible for persons with disabilities. The ART is open for non-motorized uses, including hiking, bicycling, running, nature observation, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The ART trailheads are plowed in winter, but the trail itself is not.

The Ashokan Rail Trail is open to the public from sunrise to sunset year-round. The 11.5-mile recreational trail runs along Ashokan Reservoir between West Hurley and Boiceville. The ART trail surface is 12 feet in width and surfaced with highly compacted fine crushed stone. Both the trail and trailhead parking areas (including the portable restrooms) are ADA compliant and accessible for persons with disabilities. The ART is open for non-motorized uses, including hiking, bicycling, running, nature observation, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The ART trailheads are plowed in winter, but the trail itself is not.
One of Mohonk's five main trailheads. To access the Spring Farm Trailhead at 50 Upper 27 Knolls Road in High Falls, NY, take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go west on Route 299 (through New Paltz), go over steel bridge and turn right onto Springtown Road. Make a left onto Mountain Rest Road. Pass the entrance to the Mohonk Mountain House and go under the one-lane bridge. (Horse trailers, note: clearance is only 11 feet. See alternate route below.) Continue on 1 mile, and turn right on Upper 27 Knolls Road. Within ¼ mile, you’ll reach the kiosk for the Spring Farm Trailhead. This is the trailhead for Bonticou Crag as well as the Table Rocks Trail. Enjoy the "Million Dollar View" of the Catskills – just a short walk from the Spring Farm parking area. Reminders of its earlier agricultural roots, the open fields and broad views at Spring Farm give way to quiet, forested paths.
