Popular Attractions
Dam Square is one of the most tourist-packed areas of Amsterdam, and for good reason. Its most prominent feature is the 17th-century Royal Palace (Koninklijk Palace), former home of the Dutch royal family and present-day venue for royal functions. Dam Square is also home to top tourist attractions such as the New Church (Nieuwe Kerk); Madame Tussauds wax museum; and the National Memorial Statue, which is dedicated to Dutch soldiers who lost their lives in World War II. This huge public square is, naturally, lined with numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops, and is usually full of vendors selling food and souvenirs. Tourists will also find a Ferris wheel, perfect for getting a different perspective, as well as plenty of entertainment, ranging from street performers and buskers to first-rate music festivals.

Recently refurbished as part of a drive to regenerate Noord, this 22-story tower looms over the waterfront across the River IJ from Centraal. Formerly the HQ of Shell, it’s now home to an array of young music, advertising, and events companies, plus a handful of bars and restaurants (and even a hotel). Sip a signature cocktail in the Skybar, eat in one of the two gourmet restaurants on the top floors (one of which revolves), and if you’re really brave, head to the observation deck to Over The Edge, Europe’s highest swing, and enjoy the views as you rock back and forth, 100 meters up.

Set smack in the city center, De Wallen is one of Amsterdam’s oldest neighborhoods. In 1270 a bridge was built in Dam Square to connect the Rokin and Damrak roads and this new neighborhood, due to its walled canals, was called De Wallen. The area is also known as the red-light district because of the three hundred one-room cabins rented by prostitutes who advertise their wares in red-lit windows. But there is much more to De Wallen than its red-light reveries. The neighborhood is a fantastic juxtaposition of historic churches, age-old architecture, and late-night pursuits. Packed with interesting shops, pubs, fantastic restaurants, leaning gabled houses, and the city’s most charming canals, De Wallen has the character to spare.

Don’t worry, they won’t actually try to turn you into a cannibal here, that would be illegal. But for all other carnivores, Cannibale Royale is the perfect place. Meat can be ordered by weight, from 200 to 1000 (!) grams, and the burgers follow suit in terms of specularity. The Cannibale Burger is the jewel in the crown, featuring pulled pork, sauerkraut and bourbon-flavoured barbecue sauce. Of course, a craft beer wouldn’t go amiss here, and so several varieties are on offer. Cocktails are on the menu too, which is especially handy as Cannibale Royale is one for the night owls, open until 2 at night on weekdays and until 3 on weekends.

All burgers here are prepared using Aberdeen Angus beef. So far, so deliciously traditional. But when it comes to toppings, there are some more exotic varieties: there is a version with truffles and grilled onion, a lamb burger, a veggie one and The Babaganoush, which has, well, baba ganoush on it. Don’t tell the purists, but there’s even a hotdog on the menu. One more thing: The Butcher has a secret. Behind the doors to the walk-in fridge is a proper speakeasy – The Secret Kitchen. You do need to know the password, but, dear reader, our lips are sealed.

Ever been to a self-proclaimed ‘theatre of fish’? We’re guessing not. But what exactly does that mean? On arrival at Pesca, staff offer a glass of champagne to enjoy while you peruse the day’s catch – cod, mussels, octopus, scallops – stylishly laid out on the ice. Once you’ve made your selection, drinks and sides are added, you grab a table and wait for a plate of near-perfectly cooked fish. There’s a buzzy, fast-paced atmosphere to complement the food, making it the ideal starting point for a night on the town.
