Lovely walk
Fourstones/Newbrough Head north west from Hexham, drive through Fourstones and Newbrough and at the very end of Newbrough village, just over a little river bridge, park on the left in a layby. Head through the woods in a southerly direction, it’s a pretty walk, you then have to cross another road and then you can continue on the footpath (still heading south) for a few metres before you hit the Tyne. It’s a lovely gentle walk east along the river and you can either go out and back or walk to the level crossing, cross the traintrack and walk back along the road through the village.

Otherwise for a gentle stroll and meal or drink, head to Blanchland, south of Hexham, you can walk around the village which is beautiful or head up onto the moors if you’d like to go further. All this is on the OS map in the Sitting Room. The Lord Crewe Arms is lovely should you need refreshment! The village is very old and immaculately preserved.

You can walk up (it’s quite a climb!) or drive up Eastgate, the B6306 out of central Hexham. Drive up the hill, keep left and once you reach the Kingswood activity centre on your right, park in any of the laybys on your right (a bit muddy!) or you can park in the car park at Kingswood. Head into the woods on the left. You can walk pretty much anywhere. There are lots of paths to follow, or you can use the map to walk to Corbridge (there’s one in the house). You can have a drink/eat there and either walk or get the bus back to Hexham.

As for Dukeshouse Woods, head up Eastgate, don’t bear left but go straight on near the top of the hill towards Dipton Mill. Park on the left opposite the Dipton Mill Inn in the dip and you can walk east or west (west tends to be quieter) through the woods.

Turn left out of the front door, go up the hill, through market square and past the Abbey and the park is on your right. Pass the bandstand and walk towards the wall and you can go through the gateways into the main part of the park. Great for a quick outing!

If you’d just like a nice walk along the river, turn right out of the front door, cross the road between Waitrose and Tesco and then head up and over the railway bridge. Turn left at the roundabout before the river bridge and you’ll be at Tyne Green – there is a riverside path here and you can walk to Low Warden where there is a pub – it’s probably about 2 miles. Once you have passed the golf course and are on the tarmac between the river and the railway, take the first footpath sign off to the right and this takes you along the riverside. You can loop back along the lane to come back the same way.

In Corbridge you can also walk along the river from the village on either side out and back (apart from the north side heading east) and those are nice, easy walks too. Corbridge is a pretty village with lots of independent shops and cafes, so really pleasant for a wander around. Might be easier to park in the car park on the south side of the river at the end of the bridge.

Sightseeing
Even if you are not that interested in Roman history, Hadrian’s Wall is amazing! We always take visiting friends and relations up to Housesteads Roman Fort at the centre of the wall. It is really interesting and the views are spectacular on a clear day. You can do a gentle stroll up there and back or if you are feeling more energetic, a walk along the wall. We recommend going west, it’s quite dramatic with some steep climbs and descents, but worth it and you can see the famous Sycamore Gap.

Interesting museum with amazing Roman finds, replica mile castle etc and they continue to dig there, so often find new, interesting Roman artefacts.
