Dartmouth Steam Railway While named after Dartmouth, this Devon steam railway actually runs from Paignton to Kingswear. The station beside the river opened in 1864 and is connected to the railway’s final destination by the Dartmouth passenger ferry. The train takes a scenic route along the river, through the South Devon countryside and past the coast including stops at Agatha Christie’s Greenway and Goodrington Sands on the English Riviera. You can extend your journey by adding a river boat cruise to your tour. This trip takes about half an hour each way. Check the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company website for opening times, events, timetables and to buy tickets online

Brixham Harbour Perhaps the least commercialised part of what is known as the English Riviera, Brixham is a picturesque fishing town built upon a limestone outcrop at the southern end of the Torbay crescent of coastline. Brixham had one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK in 1851 but this is now much reduced. Pleasure craft now outnumber the fishing boats with a sizeable marina providing moorings for a wide range of yachts and boats. The town was built around the busy harbour and a fine array of colour-washed houses line the narrow streets leading from this area. In addition to shops selling locally caught fish are cafés, craft shops and galleries.

One of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. For over 600 years Dartmouth Castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth. It offers stunning views of the estuary and out to sea and offers a great family day out, whatever the weather. This fascinating complex of defences was begun in 1388 by John Hawley, privateering Mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flamboyant 'Shipman' in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. About a century later the townsmen added the imposing and well-preserved 'gun tower', probably the very first fortification in Britain purpose-built to mount 'ship-sinking' heavy cannon. Climb to the top for breathtaking views across the estuary and see how it could be blocked in wartime by a heavy chain. Unusually incorporating the fine church of St Petrox, the castle saw action during the Civil War, and continued in service right up until the Second World War. Successive up-dating included the Victorian 'Old Battery' with its remounted heavy guns, guardrooms and maze of passages to explore. There is plenty to do inside the castle and if the weather is fine, you can make it a full day out with a river boat trip from the town quay up to the castle, landing you a minute's walk away from the castle entrance. After you have explored the castle, you can visit a riverside tea room for light lunches and snacks. Walkers will love the coastal and woodland walks around the castle where you can spot plenty of wildlife and birds. Don't Miss The climb to the top of the battlement for splendid views over Dartmouth town The lower floor where the chain would have been stretched across the estuary A ferry boat ride to or from the castle - perfect for wildlife spotting A home-made cream tea in the sunshine while you watch the boats drift by You don’t need to book your ticket in advance, but you will always get the best price and guaranteed entry by booking online ahead of your visit.

Set opposite the town of Dartmouth, Kingswear is a charming character village that has some of the most beautiful views across the River Dart. Set on the banks of the River Dart, Kingswear village is well worth a visit or a stay to take full advantage of the beautiful South Devon countryside. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway terminates here, allowing you take the unique passenger ferry across to Dartmouth - or vice versa. Kingswear castle sits squarely on the rocks perilously close to the sea, and Coleton Fishacre National Trust Property makes for a lovely day out. Plenty of accommodation, shops, pubs and a slower pace of life than that over the water make Kingswear a great base for all types of holiday. https://www.visitsouthdevon.co.uk/places/kingswear-p440993
