Drinks & Nightlife

It's a lovely, traditional English pub that's about 5 minutes on foot from the flat, serving good food and a wide selection of beers and ciders on tap. There's a pretty patio garden at the front for sunny days, but a good selection of board games available for when the bad weather sets in.

An atmospheric, traditional British pub right in the centre of picturesque Highgate Village, opposite George Michael's house! It serves good food and has a reasonably sized beer garden that gets very popular on sunny days. A great starting or finishing point for a tour of Highgate.

A former coaching inn, right on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Go for a slap-up roast lunch and then walk it off by strolling onto the heath as soon as you're finished. Great outdoor beer garden - in summer, the world and their dog can be found here!

A friendly pub next door to highgate Tube station with a huge outdoor seating area and a nice menu. The landlord's children go to our son's school so they're very family friendly during the day too!

Sightseeing

Not the easiest to reach by public transport, but a short car/Uber ride away is the excellent Royal Air Force Museum which is free to enter and will keep adults and kids entertained for hours. Even if you're not into aircraft history, you can't fail to be impressed by the size of the collection and the quality of the exhibits. It gets very popular on rainy days but it's big enough never to feel claustrophobic.

Parks & Nature

It's a beautiful stately home in stunning grounds that's free to visit and made famous by Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in the film Notting Hill. It's literally at the end of Sheldon Avenue (the road on which we live) so a 12 minute walk up the road takes you to the main entrance. Be sure to stop and admire all the celebrity McMansions along the way!

Practically opposite the flat is Highgate Wood - a lovely local park with a great playground and nice little cafe in the former cricket pavilion. Very popular with families but with enough quiet paths and secluded spots to help you forget you're in the centre of a city!

One of London's most iconic parks, with stunning views out over the city. It's absolutely vast (and quite easy to get a bit lost in) and has something for everyone: bathing ponds, farmers markets, playgrounds, nature reserves, picnic spots, secret gardens, woodland trails. On a glorious summer day, there's no better place to be.

Shopping

The nearest indoor shopping centre, where you'll find all the big-name brands like John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Apple etc. It's a bit down-at-heel these days and always very busy, but does have the benefit of free parking and a bus that goes directly from outside the flat.

The Broadway in Muswell Hill is home to a lot of lovely independent shops and a handful of the higher-end chains. It's very popular with the local Yummy Mummy and Ladies Who Lunch brigade and there are great views out across the rest of the city. A local bus goes from outside the house but you can also walk in 20 minutes.

Getting Around

12 minutes on foot from the flat, it's on the High Barnet branch on the Northern Line, and takes less than 20 mins to get to Kings Cross. It's the first overground stop on this branch of the Northern Line and the station itself is architecturally interesting. Rebuilt in the late 1930s in a classic Art Deco design, it's now Grade II listed and home to The Archer - a famous local sculpture.

Essentials

The High Road in East Finchley is quite an old-fashioned local high street but it has everything you'll need during your stay. There are 2 small supermarkets (Budgens and Sainsburys), various chemists, greengrocers, a fishmonger as well as a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Amy's hardware store is a treasure-trove from a bygone era and don't miss Gulls Books for brilliant second-hand reads.
