“French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent gifted an entire garden to Marrakesh, the city that adopted him in 1966. Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé bought the electric-blue villa and its garden to preserve the vision of its original owner, French landscape painter Jacques Majorelle, and keep it open to the public. The garden began cultivating in 1924, and thanks to Marrakshi ethnobotanist Abderrazak Benchaâbane, the psychedelic desert mirage of 300 plant species from five continents continues to be preserved.”

“Puerto Banus !5 mins drive east of the villa, Puerto Banus is a lively coastal town with a BIG nightlife. Amongst the highlights of any visit is a quick walk through the port area, with it’s gargantuan boats and high end bespoke sports cars. The restaurants and bars along the port front (primera linea) are mixed in terms of quality and price. The cheapest, and one of the most popular is Picasso Pizza, for which queues often stretch several hundred metres. Details of preferred restaurants follows later. The street behind primera linea is lined with bars and is generally the focal point of stag and hen parties. The impressively large department store, El Corte Ingles, is another highlight of a trip into Puerto Banus. With two generous floors of fashion for both ladies and men, and a sports department to be envied, the summer sale is a great time to visit. Opposite El Corte Ingles, a more manageable-sized shopping centre is home to Zara, H&M, Massimo Dutti and many others.”

Trail
“Not for the fainthearted! On the side of a 100m deep gorge, this is undoubtedly one of the most breath-taking walking routes in Southern Spain. The Caminito del Ray, ‘The King’s Path’ gets its name because history has it that in 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked this route when he opened the reservoirs (Lakes at El Chorro), above the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes or ‘Giant’s Gorge’. Today, the Caminito del Ray is one of Andalusia’s most popular walking routes, and it’s not hard to see why! The entire route is a 7km linear walk (between Sillion del Rey in the north and El Chorro train station in the south) that takes in spectacular gorges and ravines. There’s a shuttle bus which runs between the entrance and exit as well as a visitor / ticket centre. This (along with Quadlander Treks’ quad bike tours) is one of our favourite things to do. The walk is gentle and for the most part fairly flat, and the wide boardwalk means that, although it’s high and attached to the cliff face in places, the walk doesn’t feel too frightening! We can highly recommend doing this if you can fit it into your itinerary.”
