Kaş, Antalya, Turcja

Kaş is genuinely a great place in every way. We often say that it will not get better than this in Greece. You see, there is a noticeable Greek feeling about the town, which is not so strange since, until the early 1920s, it was by large inhabited by Greeks. Greece is also always present through the island of Kastelorizo (one of the Twelve Islands), just a few kilometers off the coast. You can see it from the apartment's balcony. Year-round boats are crossing daily.
In Kaş, there is no mass tourism like, for example, in Alanya or Marmaris, no pitchers or intrusive salesmen either. Here you will find a pleasant calm and a friendly bohemian atmosphere.

We found the place mostly by chance in the early 1990s after going to the now and then popular Alanya. But, we are not so much for pitchers and on-the-go salespeople and thought on the whole that Alanya was somewhat impoverished. So after just a couple of days, we hopped on a bus that took us from there. At that time, the roads were far from the standard they have today, so the trip to Kaş took its round time with an overnight stay on the road. At the time, we did not know that you could (can) go all the way to Kas by taxi for a very reasonable price. So it was a pretty tiring trip. But engaging in many ways and well worth the effort. Kas took us right away as we got off the bus, and it was not difficult to understand why so many spoke in such lyrical terms about the town and its surroundings.

Kaş, with its whitewashed alleys, feels distinctly genuine. People are friendly, and there is mostly a lazy and laid-back atmosphere. You will not find assertive shopkeepers or pitchers harassing you as you pass outside their shops and restaurants, many of which are high class. By the way, Turkish food is delicious, even in more modest places.

In Kaş, you go down in laps fast. People take their time and enjoy the sun, the warm weather, and swimming in The Big (cristal clear) Blue. Even everyday chores, seemingly perform at a calm and leisurely pace. In the harbor square, Kaş's unofficial center, you can hang out in the outdoor cafes from morning until the wee hours. Here you meet over a çay (tea), coffee, beer, rakı or whatever you prefer. People read their newspapers, talk, and surf the Intenet (everywhere there is free wireless Internet) with the square and the lively harbor in the foreground. You will see the fishermen land the night's catch if you are early. A little later in the morning, as on a given signal, the dive and excursion boats pull away like a gathered armada through the narrow harbor opening. Late in the afternoon, they return under loud shouts from the skippers, who skilfully steer their boats through the crowd to the anchorages. You might also see a luxury yacht majestically and quietly gliding into the harbor from time to time.

An Active Holiday (for those who want to)
Divers worldwide make a pilgrimage here to dive in the crystal clear and clean waters, which are unusually rich in marine life and archeological sites. A large area around Kaş classifieds as a marine nature reserve. From the surrounding Taurus Mountains, the paragliders and their paying fellow passengers throw themselves into the air for a breathtaking journey across mountains and seas. The flights end with a soft landing on the old harbor pier in the middle of town. There are several other adventure activities to try (and agencies that mediate them on-site). You can cycle down the mountains, kayak, ride or hike, to name a few.

There is a small pebble beach in town, just below the apartment. Either you bathe and sunbathe there or at the surrounding beach restaurants, which have platforms with ladders into the water. The restaurant's sun loungers cost nothing, but the owners expect you to spend money on food and drink. A five-minute ride by bus or car takes you to a large pebble beach with the same system.
You can also take bathing boats across the bay to Limagnazı, where there are some more shallow and sandy beaches. You can also reach them on foot via the famous Lykia Yolu hiking trail (Lycian way), which stretches a full 400 km between Fethiye and Antalya.
A 20-minute bus or car journey takes you to the famous sandy beach of Kaputaş, and after another 20 minutes, you reach the vast beach of Patara, where the sea turtles lay their eggs. In Patara, there are also fantastic ancient findings well worth a visit.
