Bracciano, Lacjum, Włochy

In between enjoying a prosecco or two by the pool, those seeking some adventure will find the area boasts numerous sightseeing and sporting opportunities. Whether it be history, culture, architecture, cuisine or seaside and lakeside activities, there is something here for everyone. Bracciano is a very traditional and genuine Italian hilltop, historic town. It is filled with things to do and see, and its many excellent restaurants offer outstanding traditional and local cuisine, often adorned with specialities such as truffles and porcini mushrooms, picked straight from the rich volcanic soil of the surrounding ancient woodlands. With quick access to Rome and Tuscany it is well placed and is defined by its volcanic landscape of beautiful hills, lakes, geological gems and an abundance of Etruscan and Roman archaeological sites. The natural geography and topography of the area has created a huge adventure playground for those who love the outdoors. Cycling (on and off road), hiking, snorkelling, fishing, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, enduro offroad motorcycling and even skiing (in winter) are just a few of the popular sporting activities available in the area.

1. Sightseeing
Day trip to Rome
Bracciano has a direct train link to Rome. Hop on and enjoy the numerous Roman creations, still standing and well preserved to this day. (Calculate a 45min to 1h journey by car or train to the centre)

The cities of Florence and Siena:
These are within easy reach if you wish to do a full day trip or stay overnight. The high speed train (Freccia Rossa or Italo) will take you to the centre of Florence in ca. 1.5h from Rome’s Termini or Tiburtina stations. Alternatively take the A1 motorway by car.

Bracciano town and Castle
Enjoy the delights of a real and genuine Italian hilltop town and walk along the steep, winding lanes of the old town and castle that meander down to the “Piazza Sentinella”, which overlooks the whole of the lake and the city of Rome beyond. Take a guided tour of the medieval castle and marvel over medieval weaponry and items. Enjoy spectacular local cuisine and wine in the numerous traditional restaurants.

Bracciano lakes:
There are 4 lakes in the immediate vicinity of Bracciano. Lake Bracciano, lake Martignano, lake Vico and lake Bolsena. All were created by volcanic activity millions of years ago, and form part of the impressive local landscape surrounding Bracciano. Take a trip around the lakes and enjoy the numerous historic Etruscan and Roman towns around them. Or go hiking or mountainbiking in the ancient woodlands. Then take a dip in the crystal clear lake waters and enjoy the sunshine at one of the lake front beach clubs or indulge in some of the numerous water sport activities on offer. Alongside Bracciano, there are two other main towns on the edge of its lake, which can also be visited on the lakes ferry:
Trevignano
This genuine Roman town has a lovely lake promenade and great restaurants. Take a short walk up the hill immediately at the back of the town, up to the ruins of the old Roman hillfort and enjoy the spectacular views south.
Anguillara
Slightly smaller than Trevignano and Bracciano this town has a promenade, beach and more fantastic local cuisine. The peaceful grass sunbathing areas on Lake Martignano are not far from here.

Etruscan and Roman towns and sights near Bracciano:
The local towns of Cerveteri and Tarquinia were important Etruscan and Roman centres, thus the area is full of Etruscan and Roman sights, often hidden away and well preserved.

Canale Vecchia (10 mins by car)
A deserted town with Etruscan and Roman heritage. It was deserted after the French army partially destroyed it. The town has a well preserved aquaduct, a spectacular fountain designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and a beautiful church. Just below the town there are volcanic pools and a river supplied by water from hot springs. The river flows past the entrance of some caves where Etruscan people once lived.

Calcata (25 mins by car)
This hill town has Etruscan origins, a geological museum and good restaurants. Go bathing at the “Cascate di Monte Gelato” waterfalls nearby.

Necropolis at Cerveteri (15 mins by car)
Here you can find an ancient burial site of the Etruscan people. Large in size and very impressive, it is well preserved.

Nepi (25 mins by car)
This old Roman town is famous for its naturally fizzy water springs and huge aqueduct. There are numerous Roman and Etruscan sites around and the nearby town of Sutri is also worth a visit.

Tarquinia (30 mins by car)
This was a very important centre of the Etruscan people and is also full of Etruscan and Roman sites.

Civita di Bagnoregio (1 h 15 mins by car)
Drive up to Tuscany and visit “The dying town”. This disappearing hill town is only accessable by a walkway bridge. It has interesting geological surroundings, a museum and good restaurants. Make this in to a full day out and visit the town of Montefiascone, on the edge of lake Bolsena, on your way.

Orvieto (1 h 15 mins by car)
Sitting on a volcanic rock outcrop, this town has an impressive cathedral and ornately constructed well, which was commissioned by Pope Clement Vll.

Hadrian’s Palace (1 h by car)
The famous Emperor Hadrian, who built Hadrian’s wall across Britain to defend the northern extremety of the Roman empire from Barbarians in the north, built a huge palace in Tivoli. It is well preserved and well worth a visit.

Frascati (1 h by car)
Famous for its great wine this Roman town is nestled in the hills south of Rome just below the popes residence at lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo.

Into the national parks and mountains
Situated in the close vicinity of Bracciano is the Tolfa national park, with the beautiful hilltop town of Tolfa situated in the middle. The area has many hiking trails (unfortunately Italy doesn’t have very detailed hiking maps, however smartphone apps such as mytrails have pretty much all trails in their database). From the terrace of the villa, you can see the Appenine mountains. It takes about 1h to get to them by car. There are many beautiful places to visit here.

Cascate Delle Marmore
This is a huge waterfall made by the Romans. It is surrounded by trails for walking and the river offers some great sporting activities.

Campo Felice, Ovindoli, Terminillo, Roccaraso
These areas offer great mountainbiking and hiking trails in the summer and skiing in the winter.

Tolfa
This hill town, in the heart of the national park to the north of Bracciano, has great views in all directions. Take a walk to the Roman fort and enjoy excellent local food at the L'edera restaurant.

Seaside locations
The sea is only about a 20 minute drive from the villa. Here you will find beaches for swimming and various watersports. There are also some pleasant seaside towns, or you can venture further north along the Via Aurelia towards Tuscany.
Ostia
Here you will find the remains of the old port of Rome, once so important for trade. Visit Ostia Antica to see the remains of the original town and visit the hexagonal lake that used to be the harbour entrance.

Fregene
Enjoy a day on the sandy beach here. There are numerous beach clubs where you can relax and enjoy food and drink.
Santa Marinella/Severa
This is a pleasant coastal area with some large beaches and beach clubs.

Orbetello
A Beautiful half island on the Tuscan coast. Created by volcanic activity this great spot offers a great day by the sea and some gorgeous fishing villages.
In between enjoying a prosecco or two by the pool, those seeking some adventure will find the area boasts numerous sightseeing and sporting opportunities. Whether it be history, culture, architecture, cuisine o…
