Sciennes - Neighbourhood

The Meadows & Bruntsfield Links

The leafy Meadows is just a two minute walk from the property. It is a lovely large park much used by Edinburgh residents and consists largely of open grassland and is criss crossed by tree-lined paths. You can easily take a leisurely quiet stroll through The Meadows and be in the centre of town within half and hour. It also has a brilliant children's playground, a croquet club, tennis courts and recreational sport pitches.

To the south-west of the Meadows is Bruntsfield Links where you can visit the Golf Tavern for a nice pub lunch, then borrow clubs (for free) and play on the adjacent small public golf course.

The Meadows is also one of the host venues for the Edinburgh Festival.

Edinburgh Festival

The apartment is an excellent location for the Edinburgh festival.

The multi-arts complex and events venue SummerHall is only a two minute walk from the flat.

The Pleasance
The Pleasance (one of the main Festival venues), is only a fifteen minute walk away.

Queen’s Hall
The Queen's Hall music venue which plays host to an extraordinary range of world-class artists, is also very close to the property.

Edinburgh University
The University of Edinburgh is a fifteen minute walk from the flat and is involved in the many festivals held throughout the capital including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Things to Do Nearby

Festival Theatre
The Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue located on Nicolson Street (not far from the flat) and used primarily for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups.

Arthur’s Seat
Arthur’s Seat is located in Holyrood Park, at the end of the Royal Mile. It is remains of an extinct volcano that erupted 350 million years ago and offers one of the best views of the city. The base of Arthur’s Seat is only approximately 15-20minutes from the flat. It is a slightly strenuous hike to the highest point of Arthur’s Seat, but absolutely worth it to look out over Edinburgh from this 360 degree vantage point.

Commonwealth Swimming Pool
On route to Arthur’s Seat is The Edinburgh Commonwealth pool, which has an excellent swimming pool with diving boards, as well as a gym, exercise classes, cafe and brilliant kids soft play facilities. Great for rainy days!

There are lots of places near the apartment that provide yoga classes throughout the day including; Tribe Yoga (Quartermile), SummerHall Yoga, Meadowlark Yoga, Edinburgh Community Yoga and Soulshine Yoga.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to museums in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s Museums range from ‘The National Museum of Scotland’, which houses collections relating to Scottish History , to ’The Bank of Scotland Museum’, where you can see what a million pounds looks like, to ‘The Surgeon’s Hall museum’, where you can look at the pocketbook made from the skin of the famous murderer William Burke!

I have listed a few of the museums Edinburgh has to offer, most of which are free to enter and within walking distance, or a short bus ride from the property.

The National Museum of Scotland/The Royal Museum

Both of these museums are amazing!

A short walk through The Meadows brings you out near Chambers Street, where both museums are situated.

The National museum has collections which reveal Scotland's culture and history up to the present day, relating to Scottish antiquities, culture and history. The adjacent Royal Museum, has collections covering science and technology, natural history, and world cultures. The museums are both excellent for kids of all ages, with lots of hands on activity areas.

The museums house a number of eateries including a brasserie and a cafe serving tea, coffee, light snacks and cakes, as well as a fine dining restaurant on the top floor, with romantic views over the Edinburgh skyline.

The Museum of Childhood
The Museum of Childhood is the first ever dedicated museum to the history of childhood. It displays toys and games from across the generations. The Museum also explores other aspects of growing up, from schooldays and clubs to clothing, health and holidays from mid 19th centre to present day.

Surgeon’s Hall Museum

The History of Surgery Museum explores Edinburgh's unique contribution to surgical practice in modern times.

This Museum traces the key dates in Scotland’s surgical advances including the discovery of antiseptic and chloroform as an anaesthetic.

It also highlights the College's connection with Joseph Bell, the man credited as the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

Visitors will learn about murderers and bodysnatchers Burke and Hare and discover how dissection was used as a punishment.

The new Museum also features a dedicated Anatomy Theatre, with an interactive dissection table. Allowing for new interpretation of the College's history and of the objects within the collection.

Bank of Scotland Museum
The museum focuses on money, coinage and economics and is located in the Bank of Scotland Head Office building on The Mound (near the Castle). You can see what a million pounds looks like, check out Scotland's oldest banknote and crack open a safe! This is a great wee museum which is more exciting than it sounds.

The Edinburgh Museum
Situated on The Royal Mile, this is great museum for visitors to find out more about Edinburgh’s fascinating history through iconic items, beautiful objects, fascinating facts and gruesome tales. Don’t forget to also visit the Edinburgh Museum’s companion museum 'The People’s Story' nearby, which also offers a wide range of stories and objects.

These are brilliant free museums where you can spend the whole day exploring!

There are lots of cafes, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance of the flat.
Sambuca is a firm favourite for local residents. It is a family run restaurant with simple decor and a classic Italian menu including pizza.
Cafe Amarelo is a stones throw from the flat and is a friendly cosy coffee bar serving bagels, salad boxes, rolls, flatbreads etc. Open 8am until 3pm
August 21 is a cool little neighbourhood café offering breakfast, lunch, hot drinks and home baking from quality suppliers. Downstairs, a communal table is available for laptop users, handy for students and freelancers along with the free wifi.

The Apiary
The Apiary is a lovely relaxed Bistro which has seasonal produce and amazing weird and wonderful bespoke selection of ice cream. It is great for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Buffalo Grill
This is a well established BYOB Steak House and Chargrill restaurant specialising in 35 day dry aged Scotch beef, as well as Fresh Fish, Burgers, Chicken and Vegetarian dishes.

The Kalpna Indian Restaurant
Open since 1975, The Kalpna Indian Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurant is a firm favourite with locals and the food is fantastic!

The Grange Pub
This is a comfortable neighbourhood bar which has great food (pub classics with a twist) and it has two real ale pumps with an emphasis on beers from local brewers.

There is a Sainsbury’s small supermarket within a two minute walk of the property. It is open from 6.30am until 23.00 hours every day.
Cash machine
There is a 24 hours ATM machine next to the Sainsbury supermarket.
