Imagine waking in a comfortable queen-size bed to the sound of birds and the flowing river, in your own private bungalow nestled on a hillside in the ricefields looking across gardens and a valley of palms and rice terraces, not another building in site. You might greet the day by preparing yourself a Bali coffee and soaking in the view from your private terrace. Or perhaps the adventurous visitor might wake up with fresh plunge into the river, a 5 minute hike downhill from your bungalow.

A quiet retreat in the breathtaking ricefields of a traditional Balinese village, a stay in The Sudaji Riverside Cottage is a truly unique experience for the budget traveller. Riverside Cottage is one of four bungalows that form part of Sunsetsala, a homestay lying in the ricefields at the fringe of a sleepy village nestled between the mountains and Bali’s northern coast. Guests to this magical space will be treated to breathtaking sunsets in a relaxed tranquil environment surrounded by farmland and forest. They will enjoy total privacy in a completely private bungalow set apart from other buildings and directly overlooking the river.

The clean and completely private bungalow includes a queen size bed (with mosquito net and fresh linen), an additional sofa bed, fan, adaptors, drinking water dispenser, wifi access and a private terrace. It is suitable for an individual guest, a couple or a maximum of three. Note: For a larger group (or to simply have more space) see my teak house listing.

Riverside Cottage is ideal for the guest hoping to catch a glimpse of village life in rural Bali or find a tranquil base, surrounded by nature for which to explore northern Bali and the magnificent Sekempul waterfalls. Guests will be able to wander up to the village where they can find basic shops and warungs, or visit the bustling morning market for fresh produce. They might also wish to venture further to Singaraja city (15 minutes drive to the west) for a full range of restaurants and dining experiences.

As guests of Sunsetsala, the occupants of Riverside Cottage will have access to the kitchen facilities and surrounding fields through which to wander. There is a direct path from your bungalow down to the river where you can take a refreshing swim. The shared kitchen-dinging area is equipped with fridge, cooking space, dining area and sitting room (including hammock). Breakfast will be served there for 30,000 IDR per person. You can cook lunch or dinner yourself or let us now the day before so we can go to market and prepare traditional local cuisine for you (70,000 IDR per person). Meals are prepared with fresh local produce by cookery teacher Kadek Ayu. Note that the kitchen is also available for tea, coffee and water.

Sudaji village is 3 hours from Ngurah Rai Airport and Kuta area by car. It is a lovely drive over the mountain from Buleleng and the voyage will typical cost 700,000 IDR. We strongly recommend arriving in daylight.

Regrettably, Sunsetsala and Riverside Cottage are not currently wheelchair accessible and guests whose mobility is limited should be wary that the bungalow is located down a path through ricefields, some 300m from where your car stops (those with motorbikes will be able to proceed further, walking only the last 100m). We can arrange motorbike rental from the village.

Sawan, Bali, Indonezja

Sunsetsala is located on the fringe of Sudaji, a market village of some 8400 people located within the Sawan District of the Buleleng Regency of northern Bali. The beautiful village is located some 16km from Regency's main city, Singaraja. The village's traditional charm will be familiar to some older guests who may have visited south-east Bali forty years ago and a completely unique experience for those venturing beyond the tourist track for the first time. The village is also located a beautiful 20 minutes ride (through hilly villages and forest) from the Sekempul Waterfall and close to a wide range of hiking trails.
