Miejsce
The Orton House was built along Lewes Creek over 300 years ago by early Swedish settlers. The three story home has survived the burning of the Whorekill, French, Spanish and English pirate raids, the Revolutionary War, the bombardment during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. The random wood floors are supported by local hewed tree limbs resting on a brick basement. You now get to enjoy the old world charms of one of the oldest homes in Lewes. Lounge in the large backyard chairs. Grill and dine on the back porch. Sip your favorite beverage on the cozy patio, surrounded by beautiful flowers and evening sunset. Relax after a day at the beach. Play tennis or paddle ball across the street in Cannon Ball Park. Take a short scenic walk to 2nd street and visit the local shops and wonderful restaurants. Six beds can accommodate eight people, with a full bath on each floor. Sheets and towels are provided. Newly renovated eat-in kitchen, fully stocked with all the amenities.

Inne ważne rzeczy
The Orton House was built on the land acquired by Helmanus Fredrickson Wiltbank, the town’s first Sherif, Scout and Chief Justice. Helmanus documented the first hand written census in 1671 listing 47 and eleven heads of households living in the region called the South River. Helmanus, a Swede, came to South River around 1650, and according to family lore, was shipwrecked and washed ashore with only his pocket watch, which has remained in the family passed down through the generations.

The South River region included the Hoere Kill (Dutch) or Whore Kill (English) creek as the provincial government transitioned from Swedish, Dutch to English rule before William Penn. A "kill" by the way, is a body of water, most commonly a creek, but also a tidal inlet, river, strait, or arm of the sea. The term is derived from the Middle Dutch "kille".

Earlier, Helmanus married Pieter Cornelisen Plockhoy’s sister Janneken Cornelius in 1659, had three children with one man servant who we presume lived in the Plank House on the parcel of land Anthony Pieters sold to Wiltbank. Plockhoy was a Collegiant utopist seeking to implement social and political reorganization. He promoted ideals of modern democracy including religious freedom, rejection of slavery and public education.

In 1663, Plockhoy orchestrated and led 41 settlers to come to the South River and build a second colony near Zwaanendael or Swaanendael, the first Dutch settlement built in 1631 and later decimated in 1632. The name is archaic Dutch for "swan dale [or valley]." Plockhoy's settlement was up the street on Pilottown Road and destroyed a year later by forces sent by the English Duke of York. The area was slow to resettle, but gradually regrew. The third settlement was attacked and burned down again by soldiers from the English colony of Maryland in 1673.

Finally, William Penn was given his massive land grant by the King of England for settling war debts and he reorganized the region.

Helmanus survived Dutch, Swedish and English rule and the destruction of the settlement and home - twice from jurisdictional disputes and lack of defenses. His durable will to serve the fledgling community was recognized and rewarded.

The early Swaanendael and Plockhoy settlements set the stage - and re-settlement supported by the early sea port, farming and trade. The town of Lewes, Delaware was finally established by William Penn in 1682.

The colonial home evolved over three centuries influenced by Dutch, Swedish and English uses from an early home to a local kitchen, store and office. The House was named after George Herbert Orton who fought in the Revolutionary War and became one of the first Pilots to steer ships thru the bay. The original wood frame House shared the backyard and path with the Plank House that led to Ship Carpenter Square where farmers, merchants and fisherman traded produce, furs, services and products. The Plank House with its single room and fireplace was most likely Helmanus’s servant quarters.
