You can also hike the Nil Desperandum Walking Trail that takes you into the Tidbinbilla Reserve.
Nil Desperandum is located within Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, with an abundance of things to do and explore. Tidbinbilla is a place of conservation, native wildlife and history—both Aboriginal and European.
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve hosts an abundance of native species and there's a good chance you could see a platypus in it's natural habitat at the Sanctuary - just ask the friendly Visitor Information Centre staff where the latest sightings have been.
Aside from Nil Desperandum, there are elements of the European history at Rock Valley Homestead and the Tidbinbilla Valley. Our helpful staff can tell you more about this, but if you want to dive deeper there are a number of books available for sale at the Visitor Information Centre.
Tidbinbilla has strong Aboriginal associations, stand out sites to visit include Hanging Rock and Birragai Rock Shelter.
Throughout the reserve there are a range of walks to cater for all fitness levels, from short 15 minute walks to eight hour treks. There is something to suit everyone.
Tidbinbilla is committed to conserving Australia's threatened species and currently has a number programs running supporting this great work. More information can be found about this at the Visitor Information Centre when you check-in.
Throughout the year there are a number of activities lead by our rangers and expert volunteers. You can follow our Facebook page or check out our website for up-to-date information on activities happening at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve during your stay.

Sleeping bag and pillow.
Cutlery, plates, tea towles and cooking utensils.

Wood and kindling. Wood cannot be collected from within ACT parks and reserves - this includes Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. The Tidbinbilla Visitor Information Centre sells bags of wood which you can purchase at check-in.
We recommend that you bring your own drinking water, as only untreated tank water is provided.

We provide:
Solar lighting (there is no electricity), a long drop toilet, toilet paper, cold running water into the kitchen via a rainwater tank, outside gas BBQ and a fire pit, kitchen cleaning equipment and beds (currently camp stretcher beds).

Cleaning:
It is expected that you will leave Nil Desperandum as your found it. This includes cleaning the BBQ if you use it, sweeping the floors when you leave and taking your rubbish with you.

Access:
Access to Nil Desperandum is via unsealed roads, strictly AWD or 4WD vehicles only. You have the ability to leave additional cars in the Visitor Centre car park over your stay, however we will ask you for your car make, model and registration to log the car at the Visitor Information Centre when you check-in. This is to help our Rangers when closing the reserve.
Access to Nil Desperandum runs parallel to private property. Please respect our neighbours by keeping within Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve property and obeying signs indicating private property boundaries. This includes closing and locking gates properly as your move along the roads and tracks. Similarly, when going for walks, ensure that you remain within Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Whilst you have access to, and can hire the homestead, other reserve users are permitted to access the site during the day to use the toilet, collect water as required, and view the historic Nil Desperandum homestead itself. Please be aware of this when moving away from the homestead as part of your visit, and store any valuables in the lockable rooms or in your locked vehicle. Management takes no responsibility for damage or loss of personal property as a result of this clause.
You are behind locked gates in this part of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. We ask that you only use your vehicle during your stay to get to and from Nil Desperandum. Internal roads around the homestead are for management vehicles only.

Communications:
There is limited phone reception at Nil Desperandum. We suggest you test for reception between the Visitor Centre and the first entrance gate and again when you first arrive at the homestead. We have found reception by walking up the hill on the entrance side of the homestead.

Water:
The water supply at Nil Desperandum comes from a rainwater tank. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve does not treat the water from the rainwater tank at Nil Desperandum, so using it for drinking or cleaning is at your own risk. You might want to boil the rainwater before consumption or bring your own water supply when you come to stay.

Evacuation:
During a TOBAN (Total Fire Ban) the Reserve is closed to the public and we cannot allow guests at Nil Desperandum due to your safety. We are generally made aware of a TOBAN in the late afternoon of the day prior to the TOBAN taking effect. We will do our best to notify you of a TOBAN that will impact your stay as soon as practical.
Please note that if a TOBAN is called and you have already begun your stay at Nil Desperandum, or should adverse weather conditions occur, you may be evacuated. Should an evacuation be required at management’s request, staff will provide you with assistance and a refund of nights not used is applicable. Please follow all instructions given by Emergency Services and ACT Parks and Conservation staff.

Animals:
For your safety, and that of the local wildlife, we ask that you do not feed or touch the animals. They are wild and need to be left alone to continue their natural instinctive behaviour and habits.
Feeding the animals can cause them to become quite sick and touching them can result in injury.
If you see local wildlife around the property, please let them be.
This venue is accessible by 4WD only.
