The wood used to make Kettuvallams usually from the sturdy local tree called the Anjili (Artocarpus hirsuta) -- were tied together with ropes made from coconut coir. Coconut fibre was stuffed between the planks and the wood was coated by a black resin extracted from the kernel of the cashew nut and then mixed with several other ingredients, including fish oil. This was the traditional method of making Kettuvallams. Today, nails, nuts and bolts are used to build the boats.

Kumarakom, Kerala, Indie

Kumarakom - An Innersight
It is in the lush green Kuttanad region of Kerala -- considered the state's "rice bowl" -- that you will find the village of Kumarakom, nestled on the banks of the awesome Vembanad Lake that stretches from cochin to kuttanadu 110 Kilometres and is 9 kilometres across.

A long, long while ago, the Kumarakam was bunch of islands. The people who lived then made the stretch of land by filling up mud from the back waters and now kumarakam has 30000 population.

Most people are into farming, and many of them supplement their incomes by fishing, especially for the famous Kumarakom Karimeen (the Kerala State Fish). The lake and the backwaters are also home to prawns, lobsters and a variety of other fish.

Every travellers are unique so We offer you the opportunity to make the best of each and every moment of your valuable and romantic time with each other in total privacy at the spectacular backwaters of Kumarakom & Alleppey.

I am Crispin, fifth generation of Kodianthara family, was working in Merchant Navy as Catering officer for 25 Years. To settle with my family I renovated my ancestors farm house, which is 167 years old and spread over 3-acres of rubber, vegetables, fruits, & farm, to do the hospitality services in a well-known Backwater tourist destination 'Kumarakom'. Kerala Govt. given the family house a title of an 'Approved Heritage Building' in 2005. From then on the tourist from all over the world started coming over here. In 2008 we built a 02-bedroom Upper deck houseboat and named after my saint 'St.Crispin'. My wife Soni, who is teaching in 12th Grade & me staying @ Kodianthara to make the guests to feel at home. Our daughter Midhila and son-in-law Riju are working in Bangalore.
