Co będziecie robić
When you arrive for your class, you'll be greeted with a warm smile and a cold beer or a crisp glass of wine. Once the rest of the class has gathered (we have a maximum of seven guests) we will begin the class. The class will have a specific structure. However, our style is fluid. 1) Introduction (30 mins) A) We will start with introductions. We want everyone to feel comfortable, happy and that they are amongst friends. B) Angela and I will give a quick synopsis of the business and its origins. - As Amish is my heritage, I love to study the history and culture of the community. So, I am proud to answer, to the best of my ability, any questions about the Amish during the class. C) I will tell you about the tanning of leather. I am in the process of teaching myself to tan leather. We will go over what makes great leather, the history of tanning, and the current state of the industry. 2) Making (2 hours) A) Each person will have their own set of hand tools (you will be using sharp objects and you'll need to sign a waiver) and squares of leather. Leather crafting consists of three primary steps: Cutting, constructing and finishing. B) You will receive step by step demonstration and instruction. C) Angela and I will be there throughout to answer all questions and to assist in all things leather craft.
My name is Michael. I am the founder of Black Bear Leather. My beautiful fiance, Angela, and I will be your welcoming hosts for this engaging experience. My Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather were each Amish leather crafters. My Grandfather was 33 when he left the Amish and leather crafting. He took on carpentry and started a business that he called Black Bear Structures. I went to college in Washington DC. I thought politics would be my career. I worked on the Hill for several years; then campaigns in PA for several more. It wasn't for me. It was 2014 when I first tried working with leather. And it was as if my hands had found their proper form. So, I founded Black Bear Leather. In 2016, I made this my full time thing. Since then, I've sold over 5,000 products. And we now have a retail store and studio.
We will have all of the tools you need.
Our retail store and leather studio is set together in a historic building, which was built in 1853. In the late 1800's our space was an oyster saloon called Bear and Carpenter. (Fun fact: Oysters were the sushi of the late 1800's.) Our store has some of the most beautiful original Victorian tin ceiling panels you have ever seen.
