Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run his authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. I'm Yoko assistant of my father's studio. He is a great craftsman. I support him and act as an interpreter to visitors in this one of a kind experience for anyone who wants to feel real local culture !

Yoko-San and Tsutomu-Sama were just the kindest individuals. I had a 1-1 lesson where I selected all the materials and built a one of a kind notebook piece by piece. They carefully explained each step, the reasoning, and encouraged every step of the way. As we were talking, I learned some history of the shop, the work they do commercially, and got travel tips and recommendations. The green tea and snacks were a nice finish and overall had just the most amazing experience. Highly recommend.

This was a fantastic and fun experience for the entire family! It was amazing to see the workshop and equipment used to make books, and it was so important for us all to see the effort and expertise that goes into book making. Best of all, we got to leave with our own individual notebooks that looked as good as anything we would buy in a stationary shop! The children (and I) were very proud! Truly lovely hosts with tons of experience and expertise in this traditional art - highly recommend!

We LOVED our experience with Yoko and Tsutomu. Tsutomu has a wealth of experience in the printing and book making industry and beautiful, old printing and book binding machinery. We learned a lot about the history of book making in Kyoto!

A memory to cherish. Yoko and Tsutomu we’re wonderful hosts. The many years of craftsmanship are evident in the way Tsutomu gently shared his knowledge with us. My girls loved working with Yoko to choose their cover and put their books together. A rare and special experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Such a unique experience learning about the traditional art of bookmaking. Combined with stories about the unique materials used, including over 200 year old kimono fabrics, the last handmade kimono threading in Kyoto and the last traditional paper cutting machine that still works. Ran by extremely friendly hosts that are passionate about what they do and provide a lot of insight into Kyoto’s culture. We and our two children aged 7 and 10 had a really good time and found this to be one of the highlights of our trip, unexpectedly. Must do to complete a true Kyoto culture experience!

It was incredible. I really enjoyed how there were stories and introductions before learning new information. It allowed me to relate and understand as we progressed. I also appreciate the hospitality and friendliness of my hosts. They were so warm and encouraging as I was learning and practicing. We had pleasant conversation throughout and I highly recommend this event to anyone interested. Plus, I feel great that I could make a really cool notebook from scratch!
