Co będziecie robić

A short walk through Congo Square culminating in a talk at my studio in the Treme neighborhood about Hoodoo, Voodoo, Black Carnival Traditions, the deeds and misdeeds of my own Louisiana Creole ancestors and other lesser known aspects of New Orleans history and culture. In my studio rum bar you will enjoy a shot of rum and a chance to check out my art and black masking Indian attire. My house has long been a place where friends come to ground themselves in the cultural vibration of the city. I am so excited to now share this experience with you!

GREAT FOR GROUPS AS WELL AS INDIVIDUAL TRAVELERS!!

Other things to note:

THIS IS NOT A TOUR. It’s not focused on site seeing but rather an EXPERIENCE that uses a few sites as a backdrop, so if you are looking for a site seeing tour this will not meet your expectations.
With that said, while the majority of my presentation will be at my studio, we will also walk the equivalent of six blocks through the park and stand in one place for long periods. Please wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated because the heat can be oppressive, especially in the summer. BTW - NO PHOTOS of my studio or myself are allowed, thank U.

I'm an artist and 12th-generation Afro-Creole. My family fled Louisiana in 1970 to escape racial oppression. I returned 17 years ago to reconnect with the land of my ancestors. I make art with wood salvaged from my Katrina-damaged home in Treme, and mask as a Medicine Man in the Black Masking Indian tradition. My art is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum and in the homes of art-lovers worldwide.

Gdzie będziecie

The experience takes place roughly an hour in the park and an hour at my studio, which is seldom open to the public. After Hurricane Katrina, I converted former slave quarters into an art studio, Hoodoo shop, and guest rooms.

This was hands down the best tour I’ve ever done x 10! If you’re looking to learn the true history of New Orleans from an amazing and engaging storyteller and super smart historian, take this tour!!! Jean-Marcel comes from a multi-generational New Orleans family who endured endemic racism and he personally lived through all the trials and tribulations of Hurricane Katrina, so this tour is both his and his family’s personal journey, and also about what it is to be black in the South. I learned so much about history that isn’t taught in school and also about Voodoo, Hoodoo and Haitian history and how it’s intertwined with rum. His story of how he moved to New Orleans and started making art - his wooden quilts - is fascinating, as is his studio, which is filled with his art, Hoodoo, rum, etc…This is the real thing, folks - not some sugar coated tour. Incredible. I couldn’t stop talking about it.

If you want to hear a seemingly rambling yet well-crafted account of the lives and cultures of Africans brought to New Orleans, and the incredible impact they have had (and are having) on the life and soul of the city, the state, and the country…this may be for you. If you are easily offended, if you find different perspectives distasteful, and if you are content with the history you were taught in school, you really should step outside your comfort zone and listen to what Jean-Marcel has to say.

This experience is exactly what I needed coming to New Orleans. The history telling is superior from this highly intelligent thoughtful human. I am so looking forward to returning for his new experience next year.

Typically at something called a 'Vodoo' experience such as this you would expect to see some magic artifacts and some history. But this was way beyond that. Our host first gave us a humorous yet very informative summary of the history of Louisiana and then explained how the term 'voodoo' has come to be associated with Lousiana in modern day. He then took us to his studio and showed us his artwork and and described how magical practices like 'voodoo' isn't what we typically think they are. Overall this was an excellent experience.

This was such a great experience. WOW. Jean-Marcel, you are an incredible storyteller - full of humor, honesty, and well - delivering a history that not everyone knows or wants to hear. You do it with such integrity, such honoring to your ancestors and your lineage, and with grace ... in a trickster kind of way. It was profound and I feel like I walked away with centuries of history downloaded into my being. Thank you for the gift! And for the delicious rum. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This was a great experience. If you didn’t learn in college you will surely learn from him! Jean-Marcel is a wealth of knowledge. Do this experience if you want to learn the real story behind voodoo and hoodoo.
