The basic plan is to meet up at the Santa Cruz Harbor, I'll give you a brief overview of foil fundamentals and then we'll go out about a mile on a jet ski or zodiac to where there are open ocean swells. We'll get you foiling behind the ski on a tow rope. Once you get that down you'll find that you can let go of the rope and start hopping between open ocean swells while we follow you with the ski. The feeling of flying above the water on a hydrofoil is truly unlike anything else I've ever experienced.
We can also do conventional paddle in foil surfing at several local beaches but find that the learning curve is easier behind the ski and people tend to have more fun.
Please note that while we've never had anyone get hurt hydrofoils are inherently very dangerous and serious physical injuries are possible. Participants will have life jackets but we still suggest everyone be a strong swimmer since we will be in open ocean. Competency with some kind of board sport (surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding) is also recommended. All of our hosts that will take you out are expert foilers and also have EMT training so you'll be in good hands but that's no guarantee of safety!
