Sebastián was such a wonderful tour guide. He made everyone in the group feel welcomed and waited for everyone to be situated before getting started. It is evident that he is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his city. I really appreciated his perspective as a local and urban planner. He really gave us insights that we would not get from a travel book. We learned so much and Sebastián eagerly interacted with the group. I left there feeling like I had traveled (if through Zoom) and felt a sense of hope. Can't wait to see it all in person. Gracias por la inspiración.

A fascinating, well thought-out tour that really gives a sense of what it is like to be in Medellin, and how the city is changing. The scene-setting at the beginning is great. This starts by putting Medellin and Colombia as a whole in geographic perspective. Sebastián then gives a clear account of the way the violence experienced in the city has changed over the period since 1975 - the peaks, troughs, and trends and the reasons behind these. The main part of the tour is really well done. The customer is presented with a map of the city and chooses where to "travel" - the order in which various locations are visited. Pictures are chosen for each area which give a clear sense of the landscape, who lives and/or works there and how the area is used, and how it is being developed, particularly in recent years. The customer gets a real sense of empathetic and creative design in the way the city is changing: new buildings and transport based around what people living there really want, many of which are breathtakingly beautiful and completely unique. It's an architect's eye view, but a really human one, by someone who clearly has a local's pride in his city. It's not a detailed view into the life of any particular resident of the city, nor is it a tourist's view of the city, but somehow gives an overview that gives insights into both. This is a really excellent tour, which I highly recommend if you want to get an all-round sense of Medellin and its points of interest.

This presentation was truly extraordinary in every sense of the word. It is an epic journey of discovery and astonishment at what can happen when local governments and communities put their heads together and work to overcome adversity. After giving us a comprehensive overview of how Medellin became the most violent city in the world in the 1980s and 1990s, Sebastian (our host) turned to the crux of his presentation: the transformation of the city into a model to the world for integrated bottom-up urban development. We hopped from one neighbourhood to the next to discover the multitude of transformations that the city has undergone since the early 2000s. One of the key revolutionary changes was the construction of gondolas to service Medellin’s poorest neighbourhood. An average of 25,000 people now travel in these gondolas every day, which represents a massive saving in time, energy and money. Another significant change was the building of kindergartens, schools, libraries and public universities also in the poorest neighbourhoods. We were surprised to see the giant escalators which have been built in the centre of these informal settlements in places that cannot be serviced by gondolas. We learnt of community gardens and of the city’s investment in sporting and recreation facilities all at little or no cost to their users. Because the involvement of local communities is mandatory and because they are involved in the planning from the very beginning, they have developed a strong sense of ownership for all these developments. The new buildings and infrastructure are treated with respect because their benefits are palpable on a daily basis. One of the consequences of this approach is that the most notorious and violent neighbourhoods have been transformed into the most touristic ones. As Sebastian put it, the transformation of this city has shown that the answer to violence and poverty is not more investment in security and police. Rather, the solution has been to invest in education, art, public transport, and other similar things that matter to poor people in their day to day lives. Sebastian also mentioned the pivotal role that a multi-sectoral commission played in laying the vision for the new city and the steps they took to ensure that politicians could never get in the way of the vision to alter or abandon it. As an urban planner himself, Sebastian concluded that a key to the success and sustainability of the transformation was the integration of the physical (infrastructural) development of the city with the social development of its most marginalised communities. This outstanding tour was utterly inspiring and is a must for all those who believe that a better world is possible, and who need handles in how to go about achieving it. Simply outstanding!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Vinaka - Robert & Raijeli

This is a special tour! From his own experience as an urbanist, Sebastián guides you through a masterful narrative where he reveals how unconventional urban planning choices, made by connecting distant organs of this pulsating body called Medellín, and curing also the local "barrios" and communities through public interventions, transforms the behaviour of the collective city. This experience is proof of how participatory urban planning, Architecture and Art in public places can indeed heal broken communities. In no other place on earth can this cathartic transformation be seen better than in Medellín that was once considered the most violent city in the world. Sebastían makes it fun, engaging and interactive. He is truly passionate about this content and goes lengths to share it with you. Way better than seeing a documentary! Highly recommended
