Co będziecie robić

We will swim and snorkel near Havana to find the remains of one of either this two ships, SS Olivette or City of Alexandria, both American ships that sank in the waters off Havana in an incredible, historic natural event.

Depending on the weather and the guests' skills, we will decide to go to one of them each time.

We will meet early in the morning in Old Havana. On the way to the beach, I will tell you the story of the century-old shipwreck.

AT THE BEACH, we will warm up with simple physical exercises and go over the safety rules. We will also check everybody's comfort with sea activities, as safety is an absolute priority. If needed, we will teach you basic breath-holding techniques.

We will swim 450 yards over the coral reef (SS Olivette) or 300 yards (City of Alexandria) until we get on top of the shipwreck. If we are lucky —and any seaman knows that luck is part of the game— we will find the remains of the ships. Normally, you can see the wreck perfectly from the water's surface.

The whole expedition might take two to three hours. Later, we can enjoy the beach while sharing stories about nice snorkeling adventures.

Other things to note
We are staying for around 2 hours in the water. Be sure this is physically suited to you.

My name is Amanda and I am a young enthusiastic Cuban that has fallen in love with the sea. I didn’t know what an amazing activity snorkeling was until I met my partner, Ale, who is a regular swimmer and apneist. Since then, the sea is a force binding us together. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, I was dwelling on ways of improving our lives and decided that sharing this new passion with others was the best way. Then Ale suggested a shipwreck he knew off and the idea really excited me. By those chances in life, we did our first experience on the SS Olivette on January 12th, 2018, exactly the 100th anniversary of the wreck, and since then, we visit it every weekend!

Gdzie będziecie

We will swim at Bacuranao / Boca Ciega Beach, 10/20 miles east of Havana. We will start from the shore, slowly swimming to the reef wall, where the ship lies. If necessary, we'll bring a kayak with us. Afterward, if you feel like, we can enjoy lunch (optional, extra cost) in a nice and warm Abanay´s house. She is a chef who will cook for us typical Cuban dishes... the moment to enjoy the company and good talk!

Very great experience! The transport was easy and comfortable, organized by the operator and already included in the price. The operator checked weather conditions in advance to make sure we’ll have a great experience. At the spot I got a very good instruction and the operator was paying attention to me at all time. Hence, despite me snorkeling the first time I had no difficulty. I was introduced to wonderful corals, exotic fish and a shipwreck. The operator was very sympathetic and we head a great talk over a coconut. Tips to get around Havana well came on top. I’d definitely recommend this! 🙂

This was a great experience! They had clothing to put on to swim in to protect from the sun and clean snorkeling equipment. The swim out to the shipwreck had quite a few waves but Ama was good to go slow and let us get there in our own time. You swim over the reef which has some fish and other great things to look at. The shipwreck we went to was smaller than I anticipated, but still something really unique to look at. After, they got us some coconut water and paid for us to be able to rinse off in the available locker rooms. Great experience!

This experience was great. We got to see loads of sea creatures. The seas were bit choppy and there were some jellyfish around but our guide navigated through it all and pointed out lots of cool fish and parts of the shipwreck. I enjoyed the workout, but our guide repeatedly offered to essentially tow us if we were tired or struggling. Would definitely contact them again to see the other sites around Havana.

This was my first time snorkeling and was not sure what to expect, Ale was very knowledgeable and helped me feel safe along the way (he even switched his mask with me when mine kept fogging up - how kind!). It was incredible seeing marine life below water and pieces of history left behind from the shipwreck. The bananas and fresh coconut water waiting for us when we got back were a nice touch, and the lunch at their chef friend's house was phenomenal. My friend and I felt so welcomed by Ale, Ama, Rafael, and Abanay. We truly felt like we gained great friendships. I can't wait to come back someday and do this experience with them again. Truly once in a lifetime!

Ale Y Ama (y Rafael) were all so wonderful. This was my friend’s and my first trip to Cuba-my friend’s first time snorkeling as well. Ale was so kind and including with her-she left snorkeling like a pro! We really enjoyed getting to know their whole group-even sharing cigars. Every bit was personalized and unique. We value our friendships we made as well as the entire experience!

This was the highlight of our trip to Havana! I've snorkeled in a lot of places but this was by far the most beautiful! The reef is so gorgeous. Ama was amazing, the group was super fun, and at the end we went to eat lunch together, which a friend of Ama prepared (separate from the experience). It was my favorite meal of the whole trip! So delicious and authentic! Would absolutely do this again and recommend to anyone.
