Co będziecie robić

This unique three-part, 3 hours, walking tour will begin where Manhattan began - at the National Museum of the American Indian. Each part of the tour will last approximately 1 hour. This first leg of the tour will start in Lower Manhattan. Specifically, Bowling Green, where the first enslaved Africans started building the infrastructure of the city, and end at Wall St when the enslaved Africans were brought and sold.
The second leg of the tour will start in the Financial District. We will walk up Wall St to Federal Hall - a site next to a famous free African who owned and operated a famous Oyster House in 1825.
The last leg will start around the Brooklyn Bridge, including the African Burial Ground National Monument plaza.
This tour is great for groups, team-building, field trips, and it's especially beneficial for school-age children.
Depending on the mood and convenience of the group we can stop for snacks, at any time.
Each location is based on a specific chapter in my book. There will be several restroom breaks.
Please note - Finding parking is extremely difficult in Lower Manhattan. Indoor garages will cost between $35-40. I advise using public transportation or car service.

Greetings! I'm a native New Yorker, a self-published author of the book, "You Are Here - A Geographical History of Enslaved and Free Africans in Manhattan: 1613 - 1865," and a certified NYC tour guide. For the past 2 years, I've given presentations about my book at schools and community organizations. I've lived in all five boroughs of NYC, but I claim Manhattan. I've worked in Manhattan as a Paralegal for over 20 years, I was educated here, I've visited most of NYC's museums, I've partied and experienced the nightlife here, and I survived the 9/11 tragedy at the WTC. This city, past & present represents my soul's work; I would like to share my love for the city with this fascinating African American tour of NYC.

Gdzie będziecie

This fun-filled educational tour will cover the areas south of Brooklyn Bridge and the areas east of Broadway. Some of the sites on this tour are famous, i.e. Brooklyn Bridge, Federal Hall, Fraunces Tavern, South Street Seaport, etc. and some are lesser-known. However, out of the 20 sites, they all have a connection with African American history that few people are aware of - this is what makes this tour unique.

Larry is an excellent tour guide - very knowledgeable and insightful about the important often overlooked, underrepresented African American early history in NYC. My friend and I were grateful for this engaging, warm and interesting experience. Highly recommend his tour to all. Planning to take his Harlem tour next time!”

Among the things we learned on our tour about Black history in NY was how the Dutch brought 11 enslaved Africans here in 1625, used the free labor to build early settlements on the southern tip of Manhattan Island, and decades later freed the men and gave them acres of land (what is now Greenwich Village, Soho, Chinatown, etc.). Descendants of Paolo Angola, Big Manuel, Manuel Pietersen Minuit and other free Blacks would have been the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers or Carnegies had the English not taken this land back. Our guide Larry was a born raconteur who brought history alive. He told his stories using symbols in statues, explicating engraved maps, digging into inscriptions, and narrating stories behind historical buildings. He backed up his history using primary sources. As much as I enjoyed learning all that I did, the reason this tour was my favorite part of my weekend was Larry’s warmth and authenticity. Had we not had existing plans just after this tour, we would have continued the tour overtime with Larry—and likely grabbed a bite to eat with him. It was that comfortable and fun. I hope to do another of his tours next time I am in New York.

I'm a traveler and have taken many tours during my time on this earth. This was hands down the best and most meaningful educational tour I've ever taken in my life. I've lived in New York city for 24 years and knew a little about its history (thanks to a Ken Burns documentary). But as I learned—as with so much of our history—all of my historical knowledge about NYC is European only. I don't want to give away any spoilers. So let's just say that as a decades-long NYC resident, this tour was eye opening.

Lawrence is a walking encyclopedia of lower Manhattan’s black history. He truly is passionate about telling the rarely told history of the contributions to this area in Wall Street. He has a zest for history, knowledge, and sharing his research and information with the masses. Lastly, he’s a cool dude and very personable to boot.

This tour was informative, well organized and rich in content. Our group was a family of four, ages 23 to 83. We were all absorbed in Larry's presentation and the material resonated with each of us. Each stop in the tour was special. Larry presented important historical material in a gracious, engaging and interactive way. A wonderful experience!

Lawrence knows so much about New York and its early history, and shows so much passion about the things he talks about! It was a rainy day and he brought me an umbrella so I didn't get all soaked up. I'm so happy to have taken the tour because it's truly an eye-opening experience and I enjoyed it a lot. Highly recommend!
